So the lab I am with has seen alot of grow in the last 5 years. Almost tripling in size and we are drowning in paper work!!😵‍💫 (Worksheets, outsource forms, machine receipts, job orders...ect) my desk seeing the highest volume in paperwork...like a literal 4 foot stack per month. I'm having trouble verifying data, data logging and filing. While still having time to run samples and maintained machines. Would be great if work was provided as well. I've attempted all of these questions as part of a larger worksheet and was marked off for them.
  1. Two unknown charges (q1 and q2) are fixed in space and separated by 0.07m. q2 experiences a force of 177 nN to the right, and q1 experiences an electric field of 4.42 N/C, also to the right. What are the signs and magnitudes of the two charges?
    1. I calculated q1 = 9.647 * 10^-20 C and q2 = 2.41 * 10^-12 C, I suspect one (or both) are wrong, most likely q2.
  2. A system of concentric conducting spheres/shells reaches electrostatic equilibrium. Determine the total charge on each surface of the conducting shells if the innermost sphere has total charge 4C, the middle shell has total charge -2C, and the outer shell has total charge 3C. I've provided the diagram (with the spaces provided) on this post; sorry for the bad drawing, they should all be perfect spheres/shells.
  3. An insulating sphere of radius R has charges spread through three locations: a 1C point charge at its center, -2C spread evenly throughout its volume, and 4C spread uniformly over its surface. Use Gauss' Law to find the electric field as a function of position for this sphere.

Some helpful tips: -Get a nice graphing calculator (like ti 84) and learn how to solve all limit problems with a table (you can get 100% in that category with that easy strat, didn't have to plug in or take a single derivative)
-know the difference between Position, velocity and acceleration (the each ones derivative to get to the next)
-know your geometric formulas (volume of shapes, area of shapes, etc) as you have to do related rates problems where they are not provided
-make sure you look out for tricky integration and derivative rules like inverse trig rules. Use the reference sheet as Bible
-use the reference sheet as Bible ! Know how to use everything on it. I don't think a single question used a concept that was outside that sheet, besides having to know your old trig and algebra rules.
-know your derivative and integral rules like the back of your hand cause that's the majority of the OA
×Also ask you course instructor for some worksheets. They helped make everything click after I failed the first time (they were outlook form sheets)x

Hey guys I am a beginner in programming, just finished my first year of CS. I was wondering if I could get some help here. I have been trying to automate a task at work that finds a specific outlook email that I get every morning and pulls the numbers from it and pastes it on an excel sheet. This excel sheet is a shared workbook that my whole department can see and goes over in the morning. I originally wanted to only do it in python but realized that I had to use Excel office scripts, which is written in typescript. So I familiarized myself with the language a bit and here is what I have been able to accomplish so far: I used python to find the email and turns the info into a dictionary (keys being a certain status/category and values being the numbers for the previous day that we present in the morning + paste in excel). This dictionary is passed into a json file into my work one drive so that excel and power automate can have access to it. I used power automate to open the json file successfully and that flow runs smoothly. The office script successfully locates the correct column it should be put under but my row logic is not working...I continue to get that the excel row index is undefined but I do not understand why. It needs to be able to find the correct column header (status/category) and then find the correct row by locating todays date to get the exact cell the value of the dictionary in the json file should be put in. Please help, code pasted below! Ngl this is my first time posting for help, if any more context is needed just let me know!

2024.03.12 01:48 jazzinbuns I literally had to scream to be heard over the class.

Flaired as I am a substitute, it didn’t feel right selecting Teacher Support since I don’t have a teaching certification (2 bachelor degrees and in grad school, but none of the 3 relate to teaching). I substitute at my Alma mater since it’s close to home and I know the layout of the school, it was a safe first choice.
TLDR: 60+ 7th graders wouldn’t STFU, so I was louder than all of them combined. I couldn’t just call the principal for help because no phone service/access.
I substitute taught for a choir teacher today, encompassing 7th to 12th grade. I was in choir from 4th grade to my graduation. And I get why some of the kids get so excited, it’s nice to have an unexpected lowkey period on a Monday.
Fun preface: The teacher’s office is locked with a different key from the one to the room, so I didn’t have access to a phone that would dial to the office and my phone didn’t have service in the room. Remember this.
The teacher left an identical worksheet for every class to do. One that I specifically recall completing in the 8th/9th grade, more than ten years ago. The teacher I subbed for came in after the one that taught me retired. I’m not even going to get into why I take issue with assigning a 10+ year old assignment to 6 different grades when it’s barely challenging to the youngest.
1st period was 7th grade. Maybe 40-45 students. They were a bit rowdy as they woke up, but nothing outrageous. Just ornery 11-12 year olds in the morning.
2nd period was 8th grade. Maybe 40 students. Only one warning about noise because they hadn’t realized I was starting class, then they were fine. I had to separate a group of five boys that were too rowdy after everyone finished the worksheet, and that’s all it took.
3rd period was 7th grade again, different students. 60+ students. My. Fucking. God.
They would not shut up. There were even students within the class calling for their classmates to shut up as I tried taking attendance because they wanted me to be done and understood their classmates were making it take longer than needed.
It took more than ten minutes to take attendance. It only got done once I started screaming what I had been trying to say. I had tried to get them to quiet down four times prior. I wasn’t screaming nonsense or repeating “shut up” or whatever; I just started with a loud “If you’ve been listening, I’m going to scream, fair warning,” then raised my voice to screaming. Something like, “Guys. Stop. Talking. Please! I am now screaming because I have asked you to be quiet four times and no one will stop talking. I can’t even hear the girl 5 feet from me over y’all. I’m just trying to take attendance. I did choir for 8 years and was a varsity goalie for 4, I can and will get even louder.” Five seconds of silence, then I continued attendance at that volume. Once that was done, I explained the worksheet, and said if they cannot keep their volume to inside voices, I’m calling their principal next (a bluff, since I had no way to).
They were ornery angels like the previous 2 classes after that. I had 2 students privately tell me I’m their new favorite sub. I must’ve put the fear of their creator in them.
The remaining 4 periods (1 was prep) were significantly easier.
Tbh, the reason no one came in when I started screaming was probably because the only neighbor is the band class (enough said there). But I really didn’t know what else to do. I’m more than open to suggestions and advice.
ETA! I did leave notes for the teacher, as I do for every teacher about the good and bad.

I'm sharing the below compendium of advice once again because there have been several posts asking for help getting through the next two months. If you have questions or concerns about your specific situation, ask in the comments.

Waiting

Tom Petty was right - the waiting is the hardest part. I've heard from students who got disappointing results that it was easier to get over that than it was to wait. Remind yourself that you've done all you can do. Instead of getting absorbed in what-ifs about college, focus on enjoying the last few months of high school because you won't ever get them back. If you're the sort of person who has to DO something, I recommend turning your attention to your intended major or your more general future plans instead of more hand-wringing and pearl-clutching over admissions results. Pretend you're about to graduate college and do a mock job search. For job postings that interest you, take note of desired skills, talents, experiences, or requirements. If you're considering med school, law school, or other graduate study, take some time to review what the best programs are looking for, how they evaluate applicants, and what you can build into your plan for undergrad that will pay dividends later. Sometimes taking a broader view of your future can take some of the stress out of the immediate concerns or the next domino to fall. It can also help you see that even if you don't get the acceptances you want, you'll still have plenty of opportunity to achieve your longer term goals.

Handling Anxiety, Stress, and Depression

There is so much I could say here, and this should be its own post. Fortunately, it already is. That's a long read, but in the words of Han Solo, "it's true... All of it." Senioritis

Senioritis is a terrible disease and it can cast even the strongest students into helpless bouts of idleness and apathy. It hits harder when waiting for life-changing news or shortly thereafter - because who cares about Mrs. Thimblevinter's 13th physics worksheet or some meaningless AP exams now that you've been accepted/rejected from your dream school? There are several ways to deal with senioritis:
1. Go down in a blaze of glory. Just let it consume you and fall off the deep end. Once you hit rock bottom, you'll realize you made a terrible mistake and you can start clawing your way back. It will probably be too late, but you will also now be inoculated against ever getting it again. Maybe aim for one of the other strategies...
2. Graduate. The summer after senior year was made for senioritis. It is glorious and you'll love it. For the most part, no one will ever ask or care what you did during the summer between high school and college, so enjoy that time for yourself. Look forward to that finish line and focus on working harder now. You've worked so long and invested so much - it would be senseless to let it fall apart now. It would be like giving up or resting on your laurels once you make it into the final 5 of a Fortnite Battle Royale (is this reference still cool, /FellowKids?). You're so close, and victory is right there for you to grasp. Just stick with it.
3. Get some real self-improvement / motivational / bootstrap stuff going. Read some self-help books, browse AdmissionsMom's Instagram (once it comes back online), or check out some of the myriad motivational subreddits (/GetMotivated, /GetDisciplined, /GetStudying, etc). Then find some support through family/friends/teachers to stick with it. The key to this is having other people to support you and hold you accountable. If you hear Gollum's voice in your head saying "But you don't have any friends," head on over to /GetMotivatedBuddies or our own A2C Discord server and make some.
4. Take some time to reflect and organize your priorities. Review the grading system for each of your classes and put the work where the grade weight is. Recognize that you are feeling lazy and that you would benefit from streamlining your responsibilities or cutting some stuff. Delegate some tasks to other people in the groups/clubs/sports/activities you lead. Lower your standards across many areas of life so that more areas can still be passable. Realize that putting in minimal effort will still provide FAR better results than no effort at all, and it isn't that much harder to do. Pareto's 80/20 Rule applies here - 80% of the value is produced by 20% of the work - so focus on that 20%. Give yourself a little license to relax, take breaks, go for a jog, hang out with friends, read a book, whatever helps you unwind. Then get back to it with renewed vigor.
5. Any task you think of that can be done in 3 minutes or less needs to be done immediately. Any tasks that are longer than an hour need to be prioritized and broken down into steps so you can make a plan and muster the motivation to tackle them. Schedule it out. Ask your friends/family to help you stick to it. Set an alarm on your phone and when it goes off, get to work again. Do what it takes to stay organized and focus on making continuous progress, not on the size of the mountain, the proximity of the deadlines, or herculean all-nighters to catch up. If you fail to plan, plan to fail.

Decisions, Imposter Syndrome, and Plan B

You're going to be getting some decisions back soon. Almost all of you will be heartbroken by some rejections, and that's ok. Some of you will be heartbroken by unaffordable acceptances, and that's ok too. Focus on the long run view and don't pin too much of your self-worth on any one potential outcome. No matter what happens with decisions, there is always a path forward to achieve your goals in life. Don't let this define you either way.

If your results were disappointing here's some help learning to love Plan B.

Waitlists and LOCI

If you end up on the waitlist, the #1 thing you need to do (after accepting your spot) is express your undying love for the school in a Letter of Continued Interest. I once heard a Cornell AO say that regardless of who accepted spots on the waitlist, they only really considered the students who sent LOCI. Here's some tips for how to do that well.
1. Actually send something. LOCI are actually fairly rare considering the volume of waitlisted students (one T20 college once said they received updates from just 20% of students who accepted a waitlist spot), so your letter will probably be read and considered. Most students take a waitlist as an L and move on because the statistics are pretty bleak. Briefly tell them why you are a great fit for their school and why it's your top choice. A lot of schools consider demonstrated interest, especially for waitlisted or borderline applicants. They never want to admit someone off the waitlist and have that student decline the offer. They prefer to enroll students who really want to be there.
2. Please don't spam the admissions office. Make your letter count, send it, and let it go. Be cordial, but concise - don't waste their time with a 1500 word email. Don't linger, stalk, email five times, call daily, or do anything that would appear desperate, pathetic, annoying, or mentally/emotionally unstable. If you're going to update them on anything else after the first email or LOCI, make sure it's a significant enough thing to be worthy of an additional contact. Don't email them a second time to let them know your GPA rose by .01, or your SAT went up 10 points, or you found a dollar at the bus stop. You don't need any significant change for the first contact because what you're really saying in that first email is that you would attend if accepted and you love their school. But by all means if you do something significant like win a nationally competitive award, win a Nobel or Pulitzer, etc then be sure to let them know. You want additional updates to merit the time they spend reading it.
3. Be factual and succinct. Admissions offices are very busy this time of year, so please respect that. Bullet points are ideal and appreciated. This allows them to digest your information quickly and easily. If you send paragraphs, they aren't going to want to take the time to distill that down and add it to your profile. Make their job easy and just send the stuff that matters. Many colleges have instituted limits on how long a LOCI can be for this reason (e.g. Stanford allows just 500 characters).
4. Follow the college's process. Some colleges have a Common App portal entry or form. For others you just email the admissions office. Some colleges allow or even request an additional recommendation letter or essay. You should be able to find out on the admissions website.
5. When you reach out, conclude your email with a statement about how excited you are about their school. This is the most important part of this list because the other stuff is less likely to have the impact that this can. Tell them one or more of the following type of phrases (if they're true):
Don't go overboard with this, but one or two sentences letting them know you're really into them is always a good idea. If you share something specific you're excited about, don't just say, "Your school/program has this thing and I think that's neat!" Instead, share why it's valuable to you. I say all the time that statements of value are almost always worth including in applications, and this is no different.

The Dark Side of The Waitlist – Rescinded Admission

  1. Colleges will absolutely rescind your admission if your grades fall off the map, you die of senioritis, or you have significant disciplinary or other incidents. They don't ever want to, but they will if they must.
  2. The rule of thumb for grades is that you shouldn't have any grades that are worse than a full letter grade below your average. So if you have a 3.9 GPA, a couple of Bs is fine, but Cs could be trouble or require explanation. This varies by college though. At the UCs, a single D or F will automatically flag your file for review. You usually won't actually lose acceptances unless you have Ds, Fs, or more than 2 Cs.
  3. If you think you're in danger, reach out to your colleges and explain. Open communication is critical for them to understand your situation and respond accordingly. It almost always goes better for you if you're open and up front about it than if you bury your head in the sand or ghost them. Sometimes they will be lenient and give you grace. Sometimes they will let you take a class or other remediation over the summer.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

Again, this should be a separate post. If you're trying to amass a significant amount of scholarship aid, here's a good strategy to use and here's a post on how to write essays that win you money. Financial aid is a bit messed up this year because of the issues caused by changes to FAFSA. Stay tuned to /A2C in the coming weeks because there will be a lot related to scholarships and financial aid, and I'm hoping to do an AMA on it soon. There will also be some more about how to choose a college from among your offers.

May 1 Enrollment Deadline

May 1 is the deadline for notifying your college of choice that you intend to enroll (but several colleges have already pushed this back due to the financial aid mess). Aim to have as much decided by May 1 as possible and be prepared to act quickly in case you want to enroll at a college that does not postpone. You must pay a deposit, usually around $500, to secure your spot. This money will be applied to your university bill later, so it's not lost unless you opt not to enroll. Take careful note of the deadlines and requirements because every year there are horror stories of students who forgot to send a deposit or form or something and end up losing their spot. Read the fine print and required steps you need to take. Check that your counselor is sending a final transcript or whatever else is required. Don't just assume that someone will take care of these things for you.
Note: If paying the deposit is a financial strain on you and/or your family, reach out to the college and talk to them. I have heard from multiple admissions officers that colleges are willing to work with you on this. In some cases they can even lower your deposit amount to $1 to ensure you will be able to afford it.

Double Deposits

Double depositing is sending a deposit to more than one college. Since you can only enroll at one school, this is ethically gray in most cases, but the specific context is important. It is considered unethical to do it to just buy more time. It is considered acceptable if you are on a waitlist and want to ensure that you'll have a backup plan if you can't get off the waitlist at your first choice. You will lose your deposit if you do this.
Here's the link to the College Board's guidelines on this.
"Double depositing means putting down a deposit, and thus accepting admission, at more than one college. Since a student can’t attend multiple colleges, it is considered unethical. Why might students and families do this, considering that it would mean forfeiting one deposit? The main reasons are:
  • To buy time to decide on a college when the student has been accepted by more than one. The usual decision deadline is May 1; by double depositing, a student can delay deciding until fall.
  • To continue negotiating financial aid offers with more than one college past the May 1 decision deadline.
  • Because the student is on a waiting list at one college and wants to ensure enrollment somewhere in case of being turned down. This scenario is the only one in which NACAC considers double depositing acceptable.
Why is double depositing unethical?
It's deceitful. Students know they can only attend one college, so they are essentially lying when they notify more than one that they intend to enroll. It's unfair to the college. If the practice continues, colleges may find they can't predict the size of the incoming class with any accuracy. They may take actions such as enlarging the waiting list or increasing deposit amounts (both of which will impact future applicants). It's unfair to other applicants. The double depositor is taking up a spot that could go to another student, who will instead be put on a waiting list or turned down.
What should you do?
Tell students not to submit deposits to more than one college, unless they are wait-listed at their first choice and accepted at another. Consider instituting a policy of sending each student's final transcript to only one college. Warn students that some colleges reserve the right to rescind an offer of admission if they discover that a student has made a double deposit."

  1. Spend as little time as you can in class. Either skip class entirely or arrive late, take a nap, go to the bathroom, go to the nurse, sneak out early, it’s all good.
  2. Plagiarize word for word from Wikipedia or a site that pops up immediately on Google. If you copy someone else’s answers, do so verbatim.
  3. If you don’t feel like plagiarizing, use AI to write your work. Flatly deny that you have done so, even when the teacher busts you for not knowing the definitions of words the AI used.
  4. Your phone and your tablet are your friends. Text, play games, check your appearance, put on makeup, listen to music, look up answers, watch videos, and even make calls if you can.
  5. Never read the directions on an assignment, project, or test. If you must read them, or if someone reads them to you, don’t follow them.
  6. Did someone 30 feet away say your name? Better get up and walk over there to investigate.
  7. Silence is your enemy. Talk, sing, flirt, make random annoying noises, argue with the teacher and other students, shout across the room, drop things, throw things, twist empty water bottles, drag furniture, slam doors, and jiggle anything that’s not nailed down or red hot.
  8. When you start work on a project or question with several steps, work until you come to something that you don’t understand or don’t want to do. Then stop. Don’t try harder, don’t read the directions, don’t ask for help, and don’t go on to a different part of the project.
  9. Argue about everything, at all times. Protest that everyone else is doing whatever it is that the teacher is telling you not to do.
  10. For group work, you have several options:
a. Sit like a lump and do nothing.
b. As soon as the group disagrees with you, sulk and do nothing else.
c. Have a relaxing chat with a friend, or use your phone.
d. Wander off to a different group, hang out with them, and prevent them from getting anything done.
e. Actively sabotage the group by harassing the members who are academically capable but socially lower than you are.
Needless to say, you should complain about whom your teammates are, how they’re treating you, your grade, and how you deserve full credit for your contributions.
  1. A microscopic pinprick must be treated immediately with a bandage – or, better, a trip to the nurse.
  2. If it’s been a full period since you went to the bathroom, that means it’s time to go again. Yes, of course it’s an emergency. The teacher said no? Wait five seconds, then ask again. Repeat.
  3. As soon as the teacher stops scolding you, or the class, for talking, it’s time to continue your chat with your neighbor. Oh, wait, the teacher wasn’t done? Well, then why did he stop to take a breath? If he meant for you to stop talking, why did he stop looking at you?
  4. If you’ve just finished an extra credit worksheet that was due a week ago, it’s perfectly appropriate to get up, walk to the front of the room, interrupt the teacher while he’s writing something else on the board, and ask him to take your work.
  5. Teacher, how old are you? Are you married? Do you have any children? How old are they? What’s my grade? What did I get on that assignment that was due two months ago and that I turned in yesterday after you nagged me incessantly?
  6. If you’re bored, get up and walk around. Do something ostensibly useful like sharpening a pencil, getting disinfectant, playing with the thermostat, throwing something out, or using the bathroom. Alternatively, just wander around like a goldfish. While you’re up, make sure to check in with your friends by having a chat, stealing something of theirs, or poking them.
  7. An uncovered wastebasket is your personal basketball net, no matter how far away from it you are or what you’re throwing.
  8. Ask “Is this graded?” about every assignment, no matter how important or trivial. If you sense any hesitation on the answer, blow the assignment off.
  9. Most teachers have one thing that irritates them more than it should, like wearing a hat, eating in class, or dropping a metal water bottle. Figure out whatever it is for each teacher, and do it constantly.
  10. The teacher passed out worksheets, and you got an extra one? HOLY CRAP, THIS IS A NUCLEAR MELTDOWN EMERGENCY AND YOU MUST TELL THE TEACHER IMMEDIATELY, AT FULL VOLUME, NO MATTER WHAT ELSE IS GOING ON!

I remember being kind of lonely in primary school, no one wanted to play with the weird kid.
Before you transferred in, I didn’t really participate in most activities, the last one picked for teams, the one with the worst grades, the one picked on by bullies.
Yeah, everyone eventually started steering clear of me to avoid being the new target of the bullies. I hated school back then, a never ending cycle of torture that I had to go back to no matter what I tried.

Time passed, and eventually there was no one around to even talk to. That’s when the smart new kid comes around, inviting me to play with them. I felt happy that someone actually wanted me to join them, but eventually everything had to come to an end.
I was disappointed that we had to go home that day, I wanted it to never end, but then you invited me to play the next day too.

I think that was the first time I was looking forward to going back to school.
Imagine my sorrow, when you didn’t turn up after school, I cried, I really did. But just as I was about to get up from the swing, guess who came hobbling out, with a visible punch mark on the cheek.
Turns out someone had found out that I was bullied and decided to confront them. Well, let’s say it didn’t go well for you, but you put up such a fight, that they decided to stop picking on me.
Well, I think I looked up to you for helping me, but gradually as we spent more time with each other, I kinda fell for you.

[...] Why did I bully you then? I don’t really know. We entered university and I don’t know we kinda drifted apart. You started to attract a bunch of people around you, leaving me out of stuff, answering my texts late. I started, you know, growing a bit jealous… So I thought there was only one way to get your attention again…

2024.02.18 14:45 Pilopheces Building Tables & Relationships - Does anyone manage slightly complex sets of tables in Data Model? Should I move to Access?

The thrust of my question is when people would tend to recommend moving over to Access or a database. I'm asking here as my primary familiarity is with Excel (have some incentive to do as much as I can there). I'm familiar with Power Query and understand some basics of the Data Model in Power Pivot so it seems a fair amount could be managed within Excel.
Essentially I am looking to track a details about Hospitals (from the insurance companies perspective). Ultimately that means the basic information about the Hospital themselves (Name, Address, Tax Identifier) but also more variable information about their Health System affiliations and keeping track of new Contracts with new financial agreements / payment rates.
HealthSystem Hospitals Contracts Rates (would need some history tables to track changes, too)
None of this will require a large volume of data (tracking less than 100 hospitals). But it will require coordination with more than a handful of tables to keep track of changing affiliations and rates over time. As I am playing around I have a workbook with several worksheets each representing a table and then added to the Data Model.
Then I poke around in MS Access and some of the basic data integrity functions seems better for this scenario. Having multi-field relationships between tables, formal primary key designations, query builder, etc. Perhaps all this can be replicated with Power Query merges and appends and grouping?
At this point this doesn't need to be some multi-user form-based dynamic "application". I'm the only cook in the kitchen and I just need to be able to serve up some simple summary reports for the higher ups.
Am I massively oveunder-thinking this? Do folks have examples of managing moderately complex data models in Power Pivot?

Hello, I don't have much to add on top of everything that so many others have said, I took my HESI in 2024 remotely.
Quick background: I am a post-bach currently finishing courses to apply for nursing school and working part-time so I only had every other day to dedicate in terms of studying for the HESI for about 6 weeks. I used NurseHub, Quizlet, Khan Academy and the practice bank below. My school didn't require a physics portion.

I signed up for a NurseHub subscription because I read a lot about others using the program and how it helped them on Reddit, so I decided to give it a try. I paid $19.99/month and used it for 2 months. I just used their advice and built a schedule based on my strengths and weaknesses. If I scored a 90% or higher on a particular subject, I gave that subject (i.e. Vocabulary) less priority than something like Biology (72%).
Pros:
I liked their program because it offered a study plan to keep up with the course work. Pre-/Post-assessments give you a general idea of what you would score if you were taking the exam without/with any preparation. Overall the subjects are explained well, and they have live assistance available as a pop-out chat if you had any questions over subjects. Works well on a budget!
Cons:
Physics portion had a lot of errors, so just make sure you double-check their work before thinking you made a mistake. Very monotonous so its tough to do long study sessions. Some sections are more detailed than others. Some of the post-assessment questions are a repeat of the quizzes completed.
HESI Exam Highlights: Remotely Proctored
I had to sign-up for the exam and looked specifically for remote testing because there were no availabilities for in-person testing. The company who was in charge of the proctoring were very thorough, definitely recommend an external web cam because they make you move the camera under the seat and under arm rests. However, the part that I hated about the remote proctoring was the fact that I had no timer for my exam or the ability to take a break from the exam.
Basic on-screen calculator provided.
I was only allowed to use a whiteboard (8x11 in), my dry-erase marker had an eraser on the top
I'm not sure if it were my nerves for the exam and just being blind or a glitch in the program but my exam didn't have a timer anywhere on the screen and when I asked the proctor about it, they said since they didn't have access to my screen they couldn't tell me anything.
I never took a break because I didn't have a timer. I was told that I had ONE 10-minute break for the whole exam but that it wasn't separate from the exam, so if I took a break it would be on exam time. I was too worried about not knowing the time and I was told that once I leave the room to use the restroom/eat/take a break you would have to go through the whole security check again on exam time!
You get to choose which section you want to take, there is no mandatory order. I just went down the list. I didn't know my school didn't require physics so I studied for it anyways but there wasn't a physics portion available.

  1. Cell: which organelle did what and where they were found in the cell.
  2. Reactants and products of photosynthesis and cellular respiration!!!! Know how much ATP, NADH, FADH2, H2) and total ATP produced. Know what happens in the Electron Transport Chain.
  3. Mitosis & Meiosis: know what happens at the division phases, the differences between them, how many cells (n) are left after each round of division.
  4. Genetics: Punnet square, homozygous vs heterozygous outcomes, pleiotropy
  5. DNA/RNA/Protein: functions of mRNA, tRNA, where do these process occur

What are alloys, metals, non-metals. Valence electrons, octets, affinity, polanon-polar compounds, hydrogen/intermoleculaintramolecular bonding
  4. Calculations: how to calculate moles, density, temperature conversions

Math (90%): I'm not the best at math, it's usually my weakest subject. I used NurseHub and it paid off in my opinion. The questions were very similar to those asked on NurseHub. The exam does try to trick you by saying how many numbers after the decimal are allowed, so watch out for the wording!!
  1. Mixed Numbers: multiply, divide, add, subtract
  2. Percentages: word-problems
  3. Military time conversions
  4. Conversions: I struggled with this, honestly do yourself the favor and just endure the torture of doing a lot of practice questions if you struggle with conversions. Know how to jump between conversions like from ounces to gallons. This unfortunately is just brute memorization.
  5. Some questions I had to solve and enter manually.

Vocab 94%: I studied strictly from NurseHub and just practiced this over and over again, some of these words show up. The questions either directly asked what a word meant or made you read a passage to identify its meaning. There are medical terminology words on the exam and they are covered in NurseHub.
Grammar 95%: I used NurseHub for this section. A lot of this section in my opinion was based on, if I say it out loud does it sound right. But often that doesn't always work as English is not my first language. I definitely recommend struggling with NurseHub and watching their videos and doing ALL of their questions.
  1. Know the appropriate usage of: they're, their, there, its, it's
  2. Read the sentences carefully, they try to trick you by misspelling words!
  3. Subject predicate, adjective, noun
Reading (90%): I love reading but for pleasure and not for exams, I owe my score to NurseHub being very monotonous. Learn to pace yourself, some of the passages aren't very long but I feel like during an exam it sometimes gets hard to keep going. I personally had to close my eyes and rest for 30 seconds after every 5 questions so I didn't get burned out.
I know this post was long and most everything on here is a repetition as seen in other posts but I just wanted to share my experience. I'm a nervous tester and I know no matter how many posts I read I search for another to see if I missed anything. I hope this helps, I wish everyone taking this exam the best! You all are very smart and talented, don't doubt yourself!

Math (90%): I'm not the best at math, it's usually my weakest subject. I used NurseHub and it paid off in my opinion. The questions were very similar to those asked on NurseHub. The exam does try to trick you by saying how many numbers after the decimal are allowed, so watch out for the wording!!
  1. Mixed Numbers: multiply, divide, add, subtract
  2. Percentages: word-problems
  3. Military time conversions
  4. Conversions: I struggled with this, honestly do yourself the favor and just endure the torture of doing a lot of practice questions if you struggle with conversions. Know how to jump between conversions like from ounces to gallons. This unfortunately is just brute memorization.
  5. Some questions I had to solve and enter manually.

Vocab 94%: I studied strictly from NurseHub and just practiced this over and over again, some of these words show up. The questions either directly asked what a word meant or made you read a passage to identify its meaning. There are medical terminology words on the exam and they are covered in NurseHub.
Grammar 95%: I used NurseHub for this section. A lot of this section in my opinion was based on, if I say it out loud does it sound right. But often that doesn't always work as English is not my first language. I definitely recommend struggling with NurseHub and watching their videos and doing ALL of their questions.
  1. Know the appropriate usage of: they're, their, there, its, it's
  2. Read the sentences carefully, they try to trick you by misspelling words!
  3. Subject predicate, adjective, noun
Reading (90%): I love reading but for pleasure and not for exams, I owe my score to NurseHub being very monotonous. Learn to pace yourself, some of the passages aren't very long but I feel like during an exam it sometimes gets hard to keep going. I personally had to close my eyes and rest for 30 seconds after every 5 questions so I didn't get burned out.
I know this post was long and most everything on here is a repetition as seen in other posts but I just wanted to share my experience. I'm a nervous tester and I know no matter how many posts I read I search for another to see if I missed anything. I hope this helps, I wish everyone taking this exam the best! You all are very smart and talented, don't doubt yourself!

Create JSON training file for LLM LoRA from 2 simple Excel Columns (Alpaca)
If you have Excel, I have a VBA script I run to create the JSON file. This works with many (but not all) models in oobabooga. It works best with LLama models of course and your milage will vary from model to model. Some models love the format, others not so much. But it's saved me a ton of time and the results seem to be trained a lot quicker than raw text of a similar character volume and give much better and more appropriate responses. All you need is two columns. The first is the context, the second the response or text to reply. Depending on the size of your dataset the context can be quite brief and perhaps even repeated such as:
Column A User asks about repairing a leak Column B A reply regarding leak repair

2 simple columns (A and B) in Excel. Context on the left, response on the right
You can repeat the same context for many replies. I have a 4,000 line data set that uses about 25 contexts in total Some for perhaps 100 replies a few that cover 500+ replies. Doing some sorting and filtering on keywords in Excel helps to attach the right context to the right reply. Then run the script that I'll copy below. Change the Workbook to the name of the workbook your data is in. Ensure it is in columns A (context) and column B (reply) Also alter where you want to save the resulting JSON file which this will output.

No guarantees, and there are lots of alterations that can be made to get different models to accept the resulting code, but this has been a good base for me to start using JSON uploads which have the big advantage of letting you add context in am easy way whereas bulk text uploads do not. This prevents some of the off topic ramblings that can be produced too quickly when using text alone.

I work as a high school math teacher in Thailand. About a month ago we got a new English teacher to replace the one that quit(a whole other story filled with drama but not boomer related.) We will call this new teacher G-man. G-man is an older white man originally from New Zealand (lest you think boomers are just an American problem) who has been teaching in different countries for the past 20 years.
When he first came here things were… fine. He seemed to lack some social awareness and would try and talk to the other teachers in our shared office when we clearly did not want to be bothered, but he was still polite and kind in general. However even from the beginning there were warning signs, like complaining to anyone who would listen about the water in his apartment not being hot enough. He left multiple 8 minute long voicemails with our supervisor just about the water and even had the gaul to request intervention from the director of our agency. He would talk trash about his landlord and her husband, whom I have met many times and are wonderful people. Most apartments in Thailand don’t have central hot water, the shower is heated through a wall mounted unit. If you turn the water on at full blast, the heater can’t keep up, so the solution is to have it running at about 40%. But no, apparently this is “not enough to have a shower” (it is, I do it every day.) Side tangent: his second day here he asked me to turn off autocorrect on his Samsung tablet. I had never seen a Samsung tablet in my entire life, but I was able to figure it out in 5 minutes; this dude did not even try.
Things started to really go down hill after two weeks. The agency periodically comes and observes all the teachers that work for them. He emailed HR and claimed the feedback from his observations was “untrue.” Students also began to tell me they were scared of him. Apparently he would regularly yell and berate the students, calling them lazy and stupid. He was unable to control his anger in class and broke the door handle to a classroom in a fit of rage.
Yesterday was the last straw. All of our classrooms have CCTV cameras so I was actually able to rewind and see everything for myself. In one class he told a student to pass out a worksheet. About 3 minutes later he was ready to start class and realized none of the worksheets have been passed out. He walked over to the students desk and started yelling at her for being lazy and playing “computer games.” He banged on desks to get everyone’s attention, then yelled at her again, saying the same thing over and over, how she had created a “big problem” and how she was very lazy. The anger was evident in his voice and he was shouting loud enough for the camera to pick up his voice from the opposite side of the room.
Now, as a teacher it is always annoying when kids do not listen. However, instead of handling the situation in a calm manner, his boomer instincts kicked in and he became infuriated immediately. By the end of class the student was in tears, and her friends were trying to comfort her. She went downstairs to our office to talk to the Thai teachers. If he had calmed down, apologized for his outburst while still asking the student to follow directions next time I’m sure things would have turned out fine. But you already only that’s not what happened.
I first became aware of the situation as I came back from lunch and saw a massive group of students outside the office door. One of them explained what had happened and I walked inside to an absolute shitshow. G-man, the 4 Thai teachers, 1 foreign teacher, and 3 of the students from M2 were gathered in the back of the office. Unfortunately our shared office does not have a private meeting area so I heard everything.
G-man was yelling again, exclaiming that the students needed to change their behavior and stop being lazy. He threatened to leave and go to Malaysia or China where he would be appreciated. He accused the students of complaining about him to the Thai teachers. The boss of our program tried to calm him down and explain that his behavior was unacceptable. However, he just pushed right past her. He said he would not change his behavior unless the students changed theirs. “I am not going to say I love you I love you and just let you sit there and play your computer games!” The students from the incident earlier were sitting in front of him crying while this was happening.
The foreign teacher told G-man to lower his voice as he was becoming increasingly agitated. G-man claimed he was not shouting, he never shouted at the at the students, and he was just raising his voice. They said he sounded angry, and he claimed he was not (he was). The Thai teachers tried explaining that in Thai culture it is not appropriate to single out students (the concept of face is very important in many Asain societies) and that teachers should communicate in this way. He kept arguing with them! “In Germany or England what I am doing is fine.” The boss responded “we know you have traveled and taught around the world, but here it is not OK.” By this point I had had enough and left the room.
When I came back about 10 minutes later they were still arguing, but G-man was at least speaking at a normal volume. They were still going around and around in circles about wether or not he had been shouting earlier. The foreign teacher tried to talk to him but he walked away. FT said “G-man, come back here I’m trying to talk to you. The students are very on edge so the Thai teachers and I feel it would be best if you went home for today and cooled off.” G-man declared that was rubbish and refused to leave, sitting at his desk, speaking to no one the rest of the day. Last night we received word that his contract was terminated.
This man truly displayed all of the classic boomerisms. He took absolutely no responsibility for his actions, behaved like a complete child, and was condescending towards our boss for being a women/ younger than him/ nonwhite. The level of entitlement he displayed throughout his time with us was unreal. The best part is, he came to our office this morning (despite being specifically told not to) because I think he still expected us to beg him to stay. News flash asshole: all 3 foreign teachers were coving for English classes just fine before you came along. I seriously hope our agency stops hiring these boomers who are unable or unwilling to adapt to Thai cultural norms and instead decide to remain the same bitter, egotistical, shell of a person they always have been.

Nothing too serious. I’m not feeling well, so my patience is a little short, but a girl came in late while I was giving directions, and started having a full volume conversation over me with another student. I just barked “EXCUSE ME” a little louder and with more of a tone than i usually do, but I didn’t lose control or anything. Either way, they looked shocked to hear it come from me (I’m usually very low key). Anyway, five minutes later, I’m going through a drawer at the back of the classroom to look for a makeup worksheet, and the same kids I barked at ask me to mediate some pretend ball busting they’re doing with each other, then they ask me who I think is going to win the Super Bowl. Kids are weird lol
