I (30M), and my wife (29F) have been dealing with this issue for about a year. My grandfather is 87M. My wife and I are both teachers and are quite qualified for our jobs. We both have many tattoos, smoke a bit of weed on the weekends, and enjoy spending our down time with friends. My wife is a practicing Wiccan. This will be important later.
Last August, my Grandfather pulled me aside. He began by stating he knows it's none of his business, but he is worried about his reputation in the town. I work in the Catholic school, and he is apparently ashamed to know that my wife is not Christian.
He stated, in no uncertain terms, that I should not be trusted around children as my core values are flawed. He said during this conversation that my professionalism is severely lacking. After that, he goes on to say my wife is an immortal "woman of ill repute" as she is a witch. He also said that he does not respect teachers as a profession, as we are glorified babysitters. He believes I should be fired and not allowed arouns children. He finished off the conversation by saying that I can't be a Christian, as I have Tattoos, smoke, and my wife is a witch.
This is where I might be the AH. I cut the conversation and said I would not allow him to talk to my wife and I like this. It was rude, ignorant, and he should be ashamed. He became very irate. I told him he has an option, respect us as we respected him, or I wish him well but will not speak to him again. He walked away.
My wife, who was taking our dogs for a walk, just got back at the tail end. She saw him storm off, and came to ask what was up. I told her what he said. This is where the issue got out of hand.
My wife asked me to wait in the car and she went off on him. She told him in no uncertain terms that we was breaking this family apart and should be ashamed at the way he treats others (there is a long history of stunts like this). She said that he should be proud of what we accomplished, not try to tear us down. He should celebrate differences, not needlessly judge others. She laid into him hard.
He was very upset, as no one should yell at their elder. I get where he is coming from, but no one in the family had ever called him out before. I imagine it was jarring!
The day after the incident, I called him. I wanted to discuss the issue and come to a resolution. He ignored my call. 2 weeks later, I tried again. Nothing. 5 months later, I showed up with a bottle of his favourite Sherry to try and get back in his good books. He refused to open the door. My grandmother was diagnosed with dementia at this point, and had no idea why he wouldn't talk to us.
All the while, my aunt (59F) and uncle(61m) had been spreading rumors about us. They claim we indoctrinate the children and use them for "satanic rituals". In January, my wife and I had our second miscarriage that resulted in an inability to have children moving forward without a donor (bad ectopic pregnancy). My aunt and uncle claimed this was Gods retribution for what we did to my grandfather.
A month ago, my Grandfather suffered a massive heart attack. I tried to go to the hospital, but was not allow to visit. I called a week after he was sent home, as docs gave him 6 months max to live. I called, and we talked for 2 hours. An hour and a half was spent defending my wife to him. The rest was spent listening to his concerns over his wife. I told him I missed my grandfather. He cut the conversation as I was being "as hysterical as a woman".
After this, has has cut us out completely. He does not want to see us or talk to us again. I am no longer allowed to see or assist with my grandmother. With months left of his life, I'm sad to see that this is how the relationship ended up. He did a lot to support me when I was younger, like paid for language lessons and tutoring, summer camps and hockey.
I feel like I was right to defend myself and my wife, but this issue has caused a rift in our family, and I can't help but feel like the AH. We have been completely cut out of the family by my aunt and uncle. I am hoping some impartial parties might weigh in. Please keep in mind my inherit bias. I am sure there is another perspective that paints us as the antagonistic party as we did yell pretty heavily during the initial argument.

Background on me, I have a bachelors in elementary education and masters in literacy and language development. I just had a baby last year and I’m staying home with him. I’m happy to be out of public school. It was all consuming and draining. The lack of care for children’s development and understanding of their natural curiosity and play devastated me.
My son is just about a year and I’m really quite interested in Montessori education. I’m eager to learn more and I’d like to work at a Montessori school when he starts school (hopefully Montessori).
Any teachers with insight on programs? I looked online and some were saying 2 years but wasn’t sure if it was for everyone or those who didn’t have any background in education! Any insights or stories on your pathways would be amazing!

Long story short we have been attending since January 2024. My son absolutely loves it...unfortunately I'm not even lightly fond of the leadership. Without out too much identifying information, the person who is there to answer parents questions, help with organization, welcome new members and such is just awful at what they do. This last meeting, 2 parents asked me questions which I do not mind at all answering and then I introduced them to the person who SHOULD be better educated in the CAP subject than me...the person was "too busy" at that moment and said she'll talk to them later. Mind you what they were busy doing was scrambling to grab stuff for the begining of CAP class that she could've done earlier because it's not like you don't know what day and time CAP is every single week. That's just one example and this "scrambling" happens every single week. My other concern is the preferance given to this same individuals child who is clearly not mature enough to handle all of the cadets and they both come off (in my opinion) as rude and ignorant.
Lastly, almost every CAP meeting where one of the highest ranking CAP members attends, this is a 15 year old high school student who is already at the rank of major (I don't know how that even happened, is that possible?), they both do nothing but idle chit chat until it's the 15 year olds turn to give a speech on some topic. The 15 year old is so incredibly snobby, immature and I can't for the life of me understand what is so fantastic about that person. She brings no honor to the CAP family and the last time I heard her speaking she was talking about communication and said: "...you need to read your emails but don't email me because I never read that stuff..."
So, do I just suck it up or look for a different squadron? No, I absolutely DO NOT FEEL I can speak to this person about this and No, I have not asked how other parents feel but I can tell by my interaction with the parents last week that they were very confused and did not feel listened to. Another thing is that all 3 of us parents are of non-American decent and I do wonder if that has anything to do with that, which I hate to think but my wife who is an active duty Marine and is American even noticed it but also stated she's never really even spoken to this person as they've never introduced themselves and just walk around all blase around the building or in a huff looking for paperwork.

I have very bad sleep issues since my childhood. When I was going to elementary school I was having problems when I had to wake up I remember my mom was yelling at me to wake up and go to school and I was crying because I really couldn’t walk from lack of sleep yet I wanted to wake because I didn’t wanted to upset her. I always go to bed late I go to school early for all my life but I went to without sleep instead of sleeping early. Now I am 24 and I still have sleeping problems. I struggle to go to bed early because I always find myself energized at night and I feel like a slave when I go to bed early my brain tells me “are u a slave you are gonna sleep on that precious hours you have here” believe me I am not joking this happens. Then I don’t go to sleep early. This is the first problem. The second is sometimes I feel very motivated at night that I can conquer worlds tomorrow when I wake up. I tell myself “I will wake up early tomorrow I will get out the bed like David Goggins I will be super productive “ but when I wake up at alarm rings everything changes I feel like an elephant heavy can’t leave bed sleep feels like a charm and I just can’t open my eyes and I couldn’t leave bed. I don’t have much responsibility so It’s ok if I keep sleeping that’s a reason why I stay in bed absolutely but I cannot fake responsibilities to give myself fake reasons to force myself to wake up. I have to learn to wake when there is nothing to do at all. But right now I can’t do that. I can take medicine if needed I tried melatonin it’s not working good on me.

Third, just as everyone at Columbia has the right to express their views, they also must respect the rights of others to do the same. As a result, protests must comply with time, place, and manner restrictions which, for example, prevent loud protests at night when other students are trying to sleep or prepare for exams. One group’s rights to express their views cannot come at the expense of another group’s right to speak, teach, and learn.
Fourth, our values—as well as our duties under civil rights laws—compel us to condemn hate and to protect every member of our community from harassment and discrimination. Antisemitic language and actions are unacceptable and calls for violence are simply abhorrent.
I know that many of our Jewish students, and other students as well, have found the atmosphere intolerable in recent weeks. Many have left campus, and that is a tragedy. To those students and their families, I want to say to you clearly: You are a valued part of the Columbia community. This is your campus too. We are committed to making Columbia safe for everyone, and to ensuring that you feel welcome and valued.
We've worked hard to balance these principles. To that end, since Wednesday, a small group of academic leaders has been in constructive dialogue with student organizers to find a path that would result in the dismantling of the encampment and adherence to university policies going forward. Regretfully, we were not able to come to an agreement.
Both sides in these discussions put forward robust and thoughtful offers and worked in good faith to reach common ground. We thank them all for their diligent work, long hours, and careful effort and wish they had reached a different outcome.
The university’s goal for the talks was a collaborative resolution with the protestors that would result in the orderly removal of the encampment from the lawn. The students also were asked to commit going forward to following the university’s rules, including those on the time, place, and manner for demonstrations and events.
While the university will not divest from Israel, the university offered to develop an expedited timeline for review of new proposals from the students by the Advisory Committee for Socially Responsible Investing, the body that considers divestment matters. The university also offered to publish a process for students to access a list of Columbia’s direct investment holdings, and to increase the frequency of updates to that list of holdings.
Additionally, the university offered to convene a faculty committee to address academic freedom and to begin a discussion on access and financial barriers to academic programs and global centers. The university also offered to make investments in health and education in Gaza, including supporting early childhood development and support for displaced scholars. There are important ideas that emerged from this dialogue, and we plan to explore pursuing them in the future.
As the past seven months have shown, our campus is roiled by divisions over the war in Gaza. All year, we have sought to facilitate opportunities for our students and faculty to engage in constructive dialogue, and we have provided ample space for protests and vigils to take place peacefully and without disruptions to academic life.
But we must take into account the rights of all members of our community. The encampment has created an unwelcoming environment for many of our Jewish students and faculty. External actors have contributed to creating a hostile environment in violation of Title VI, especially around our gates, that is unsafe for everyone—including our neighbors. With classes now concluding, it represents a noisy distraction for our students studying for exams and for everyone trying to complete the academic year.
Consistent with our interim demonstration policies, after reading days, exams, and commencement, protests may continue on campus by application with two-days’ notice in authorized locations. We have no intention of suppressing speech or the right to peaceful protest.
We also do not want to deprive thousands of students and their families and friends of a graduation celebration. Please recall that many in this graduating class did not get a celebration when graduating from high school because of the pandemic, and many of them are the first in their families to earn a university degree. We owe it to all of our graduates and their loved ones to honor their achievement. We want to reassure our community who are trying to make plans that we will indeed hold a commencement.
For all of the reasons above, we urge those in the encampment to voluntarily disperse. We are consulting with a broader group in our community to explore alternative internal options to end this crisis as soon as possible. We will continue to update the community with new developments.

While the university will not divest from Israel, the university offered to develop an expedited timeline for review of new proposals from the students by the Advisory Committee for Socially Responsible Investing, the body that considers divestment matters. The university also offered to publish a process for students to access a list of Columbia’s direct investment holdings, and to increase the frequency of updates to that list of holdings.
Additionally, the university offered to convene a faculty committee to address academic freedom and to begin a discussion on access and financial barriers to academic programs and global centers. The university also offered to make investments in health and education in Gaza, including supporting early childhood development and support for displaced scholars. There are important ideas that emerged from this dialogue, and we plan to explore pursuing them in the future.
As the past seven months have shown, our campus is roiled by divisions over the war in Gaza. All year, we have sought to facilitate opportunities for our students and faculty to engage in constructive dialogue, and we have provided ample space for protests and vigils to take place peacefully and without disruptions to academic life.
But we must take into account the rights of all members of our community. The encampment has created an unwelcoming environment for many of our Jewish students and faculty. External actors have contributed to creating a hostile environment in violation of Title VI, especially around our gates, that is unsafe for everyone—including our neighbors. With classes now concluding, it represents a noisy distraction for our students studying for exams and for everyone trying to complete the academic year.
Consistent with our interim demonstration policies, after reading days, exams, and commencement, protests may continue on campus by application with two-days’ notice in authorized locations. We have no intention of suppressing speech or the right to peaceful protest.
We also do not want to deprive thousands of students and their families and friends of a graduation celebration. Please recall that many in this graduating class did not get a celebration when graduating from high school because of the pandemic, and many of them are the first in their families to earn a university degree. We owe it to all of our graduates and their loved ones to honor their achievement. We want to reassure our community who are trying to make plans that we will indeed hold a commencement.

At school we had an opinion speech, where everyone would tell their opinion and give reasoning to why the opinion is "right". So when it was my turn, I go to the front of the class, and I start talking, and not even 5 seconds in I burst out laughing uncontrollably. I was not able to continue the speech, since I couldn't talk 2 words before bursting out laughing.
Also this is not my first time, since I udually have hard time keeping a serious face at serious ted talks, funerals, probably any place where you must not do it. Have any of you ever experienced issues being paid? For context I work for a staffing agency and pick up jobs on Frontline. I picked up a 4 day job but only attended day one. I got sick and didn’t feel I should attend as it was at an elementary school. I called off the morning of day two and the assignment was taken off my frontline account. When I went to submit my hours, the assignment was not on my account and I couldn’t put in my hours. I contacted my staffing agency and was told they’d reach out to the school to confirm. However it’s been over a week, I was not paid on time and to this day my staffing agency hasn’t heard back from the school. I’m just curious if any of you ever experienced this and any suggestions on how to proceed forward.

I’m not normally an emotional guy, and this show has managed to wreck my heart on several occasions. They almost always single major shifts in character that show a deeper human behaviour than the typical stereotypical character development. My favourites:
1) Officer Pryzbylewski solving the Avon code: here is a seemingly useless guy, up to this moment you felt totally repulsed by, who in the right place with the right personal challenge incentives comes up with an amazing feat.
2) Officer McNulty throws up on hearing the shot interaction: asshole for the entire show actually has a heart and recognises that there are consequences to his plans.
3) Major Rawls speech: asshole humanising previous asshole and brings him up again when you least expect him to: Rawls was completely changed to me after this episode.
4) Officer Moreland schools Omar: probably the only moment in the entire show where Omar is legitimately put in his place and recognises it as such. Almost always high and mighty gets told by Bunk in no uncertain terms that he’s part of the problem and can’t act holier than though because he steals from drug dealers
5) Frank Sabokta willingly drives to his death. Symbolises the death of the working class to me, with games played way above their head and them bearing the consequences.
6) Sergent Landsman lets Bubbles walk free: Bubbles causes the death of his friend, Jay at that point in time is so wanting to bring up his stats but recognises the situation for what it is and realises that Bubbles is torturing himself enough already and lets him go.
7) Bubbles meets his sponsor again, and breaks down at his current situation. Tear up just thinking about it: it’s him at his lowest.
8) Duquan can’t get help: the show builds up an amazing come around story for him from this smelly dude to working with the computer and potentially breaking out, only for him to find no way out of the situation. Sad sad sad and leaves you powerless. In contrast the noisy wheel gets the geese and ends up adopted by bunny.
9) Bubbles walks up to join his sister and her child: whole show he sways around in destitute until finally he makes it. Or you hope he does.
10) Elena pleads with McNulty to be happy with his policewoman relationship: here is a woman who is presented to you as generally uncompromising and selfish with few redeeming qualities, but she recognises McNulty behaviour unselfishly pleads with him not to fuck up his life again - in the process recognize that she has no hope with with him and perhaps for herself as well as she doesn't seem to be able to keep a man around. She just wants someone to be happy.
I’m sure there are many more that I can’t call but will do on my second binge soon.

They’re massive republicans and America lovers so maybe they wanted to be patriotic.
For as long as I can remember, everyone has called me Penn or Penny. My parents insisted that everyone was to call me by my full name but most people could see how ridiculous my parents are.
My sister (28F) didn’t struggle as much with her name since Arizona just sounds better than Pennsylvania, and the Greys anatomy character Arizona Robbins made the name seem quite cool as we got older. I was mocked and teased as a child in elementary school because of my parents insistence on my full name. They would literally berate my teachers for letting me write ‘Penny’ on my work/books.
When I was 21, I got my name legally changed to Penelope. Most people I had met in college had assumed that I went by Penny as a nickname for Penelope, even my boyfriend’s mother called me Penelope because I was too embarrassed to tell her that Penny was short for Pennsylvania. I kept it a secret from my parents and close family because I knew my parents would go mental and accuse me of disrespecting their choice.
I’m getting married this summer to my lovely boyfriend Tom (31M) and as you all know, you have to say your full name in your wedding ceremony when doing your vows. I knew I had to fess up about the name change because the alternative would be hoping they kept quiet when they heard me say ‘I, Penelope’ instead of ‘I, Pennsylvania’.
I invited them over to my home and I tried to tell them in a really calm way that I had changed my name but they freaked out. They said that I was disrespectful, I was calling their choice dumb etc. They are refusing to attend the wedding now.
I know i’m not the AH for changing my name, but my parents are particularly pissed about how I kept it hidden for five years before telling them. Most people I know agree with them. They think that I should’ve had the courage to be honest with them years ago so they would’ve had time to get used to it instead of me dropping the news on them two months before my wedding and causing all this drama. Organised crime is a problem that we can now deal without Lileas, the BFF has been crippled, they can be erradicated next term and unrest is low across the nation after the discovery of the Bernard Circas conspiracy and Old Guard purge. Sordland is now a member of the CSP, we will have to deal with that but I personally think it's the best sphere to be in. Agnolia isn't very angry with us yet and Wehlen relations are stable. Rumburg won't dare attack us anytime soon and have no nukes to throw. Rayne's family is happy, he doesn't smoke or drink anymore and he has only lost three ministers during his term. I don't remember the name of the manga, but a friend from high school recommended it to me saying that it was a coming of age romance, when actually the entire plot revolved around the drama of a college age guy discovering his best friend has been having sex with the mc's elementary school age little sister. It was complete and utter trash that resulted in the mc calling out his friend multiple times and getting no responses back, the "friend" at one point kidnapping the sister, and then another point of the sister running away to be with the friend. The entire time, the story paints the mc as being in the wrong for trying to stop love from blossoming, with it ending with the mc remaining friends with the guy and letting him continue the relationship with his underage sister. It was complete and utter trash that resulted in the mc calling out his friend multiple times and getting no responses back, the "friend" at one point kidnapping the sister, and then another point of the sister running away to be with the friend. The entire time, the story paints the mc as being in the wrong for trying to stop love from blossoming, with it ending with the mc remaining friends with the guy and letting him continue the relationship with his underage sister.
