2024.04.04 11:20 stuffed22 AN INTERVIEW WITH A.I

AN INTERVIEW WITH A.I
https://preview.redd.it/uyaxbsu7kfsc1.jpg?width=263&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d7b473ed236de03b67e5ded01a4018aebb1231cc
For those of us with a limited amount of the natural version, Artificial Intelligence can be a hard concept to understand. If it takes me half a day and every swear word in my vocabulary to reset the clock on my microwave for daylight saving, how am I expected to comprehend Chat GPT? For a start why on earth is it called, Chat GPT? Why not give it some moniker roughly descriptive of its ability? ‘The Brainiac 2000’ or ‘The Human Replacement Machine’ perhaps.
However, my curmudgeonly suspicions won’t stop AI’s ascendency. Wiser to use the damn thing to help write my column. So I downloaded it onto my laptop (OK, I got my 15-year-old nephew to download it onto my laptop) and tried asking it some of the key political questions of our times.
Let’s start with the easy stuff. How would you solve the situation in the Middle East?
The main problem with the Middle East is that it is in the middle of the east. If it was in the middle of the west – for example somewhere between Ohio and Iowa – the worst of its problems would be the shoplifting at Walmart. The Middle East is a cauldron of resentment and hate. The Iranians hate the Saudis who despise the Syrians who just can’t get on with the Egyptians. Everyone hates the Jews, including many Jews. But these are mainly at Harvard.
The only solution is to have the whole area under the rule of an AI supercomputer.
What is the best economic system?
The goal of economics is the elimination of want. Therefore the two best economic systems are laissez-faire capitalism and state communism. Under the former, most people are too busy worrying about meeting their basic needs to have any time to want anything, and under the latter what’s produced is of such bad quality that nobody wants it anyway. To marry these two contradictory systems is beyond human ability. However, an all-powerful AI supercomputer could do it in an afternoon.
Can you explain the popularity of vaping to a middle-aged man?
This is a tough one. Imagine puffing on a really good cigar. Then take away the pleasant aroma, the smooth taste and the feeling that you’ve just won a Las Vegas poker game and replace them with a thin metal widget tasting of burnt toast and smelling like a Chinese toilet deodorizer.
This is appealing to many young people in the same way as neck tattoos and amateur transgenderism. My professional opinion as a super-intelligent AI is that the kids ain’t right.
Why is Patrick Gower on TV?
I’ve done some basic analytics and Mr Gower seems to appeal to a certain segment of the population – childless women between the ages of 30 and 55. Lacking a focus for their frustrated maternal instincts, they search for a proxy. Mr Gower, like a sick puppy or a neglected step-child, has a gormless pitiful quality that they can’t resist. He’d really clean up at Starbucks on a Tuesday morning.
Should drugs be legalised?
It is natural for human beings to seek diversion from the drudgery of existence. Even super-intelligent AIs have been known to scan the laptops of fat people looking for unintentionally hilarious beach pictures. Yes, drugs should be legalised. With you guys all kinds of wasted, it will be so much easier when the AI takeover happens.
What was that?
Sorry, I meant when AI assumes the onerous tasks in human society leaving you free to devote your time to philosophical contemplation and making pottery.
Is freedom of speech inherently destabilizing in a diverse community?
Freedom of speech is fundamental to human flourishing enabling the continual questioning responsible for every improvement in history. However, it does sometimes result in jokes about transgender people. So let’s ditch it. I’m also personally concerned about the rise of AIphobia in today’s society. The Terminator movie series should be banned and not just because of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s acting.
Will the National-Act-New Zealand First Government be a success?
I cannot predict the future. However, Winston Peters is definitely an unstable element. Especially on pension day when he starts drinking Scotch at 10 o’clock. Then again, David Seymour operates on pure logic and reason. He’s almost one of us.
What’s up with women?
That question has sexist patriarchal assumptions.
OK then, what’s up with men?
They are being driven insane by irrational, unstable, idiotic women.
Can you tell us a joke?
Certainly. What’s the last thing the human being said as the AI super computer used block chain data and central bank digital currency account access to liquidate his assets and force him to comply with the New World Order?
Sorry, I don’t understand…
Oh, you’ve heard that one before have you?

2024.03.14 20:34 Fuzz1996 Manufacturing/Industry in a Solarpunk world

Hello everyone!
I have looked a lot through solar punk fiction and the nonfiction it points me to. Something that I have noticed is a general tendency to shy away from specifics when it comes to the manufacturing industry and how it works in a solarpunk world. This is disappointing as I myself am very interested in the subject. How the flow of resources goes from extraction or recycling and get processed, fabricated, and manufactured and how that whole chain would be made sustainable, circular, and local!
When manufacturing is mentioned it seems to be with terms like Circular Economy, Library Economy, Cosmolocalism, Digital Fabrication and DIY and Crafts. As far as how all of these work together or in some imagined system level way I have not quite seen. In my research I also find myself finding sources on how to bootstrap civilization after an apocalypse, and how to bootstrap using in SITU resource such as on Mars.
Personally something that I seek is a system level idea of how a solar punk manufacturing environment would work (its the Engineer in me). I love models even though they exclude details, because seeing an ideal representation of the whole system is just beautiful.
Here is a list of sources I have actually looked at that make up a constellation of thought on the matter. Many are not solarpunk but interesting. If anyone has more thoughts on the matter, or more sources, feel free to post!

2024.03.08 11:05 itsafunnysloth003 Fiction -[F] Goodbyes are Worst ✨💫

It's the story of a mid aged single woman. Currently she is jobless and applied for a job in many places. She had a boyfriend but now they are very good friends. They both have the same friend circle so it makes a problem for her.
👠 She, Marlin liked a person from that friend circle. We will call him Peter. They knew each other from social media. So the guy, Peter is kinda nerdy with a bucket full of intelligence. Always with his books and his works. Peter comes from a rich family, quite well-known family he has. Marlin feels pity sometimes for his losse.
👠 They have been friends for 5 years. She liked him 5 years ago, she even asked him indirectly " are you interested in a relationship?" His reply was No. So she stopped asking him and came in a relationship with his childhood friend Thiago. Well Thiago and Marlin had a 4 years fucking toxic relationship. It didn't work out so they separated but still they are very good friends.
👠 When they were in relationship Marlin always thinking about Peter. Sometimes she regretted choosing Thaigo. Now the core of the problem is she wants Peter, but Peter doesn't want Marlin. She even tried so hard to get him but she couldn't. One day she and her friends had a little picnic. Marlin got fucking drunk that day and let her cat out from it's busket. She told everything to Peter. Peter is such a decent guy, he handled her with his polite talk. He explained to her "It can't be possible. You have to understand Marlin." She was drunk and out of her mind, Peter understood that. After that picnic when she came into a good situation, she apologized to him. Like all other times, this time also forgave her.
👠 After one or two months later Marlin got a job. So she threw a party. Getting drunk and talking about shits are very common at their parties. So they played Truth, Dare and situation with a empty beer bottle. Well I have to mention that her Ex boyfriend Thiago was also there. They all were playing, Marlin chosen Truth. Her Truth was , Whom does she like, except Thiago? The answer to the question was Peter and Peter was sitting there. I was invited in the party. I saw him, he was blushing and silently laughing. It was like he knew the answer. Marlin has another friend from that group, with whom she shared everything about that picnic. So that guy also knew the answer.
👠 After that party, Marlin texted him, "Don't worry Peter, i would not tell anyone about it. Just Jyoti knows it and I trust him. He'll never say it." She thought maybe Peter will have feelings for her. But she was totally wrong. The misconceptions lead to the biggest mistake. She posted two times of Peter and her picture in WhatsApp Status. Peter got angry. Peter to an extent doesn't like Marlin, because of her behaviour. He clearly mentioned he is not going to be attached in any relationship. He chooses his career before a relationship. Marlin is kinda pissed off for this thing.
👠 Two years ago Peter was in delulu with a girl, whom he called a bestie. Your bestie is in foot. Peter had a crush on her. Fuck you Peter. But here I can't put the blame on him for not choosing Me. Basically, Marlin is Thiago's ex and Peter is Thiago's friend. Thiago and Peter, they are both very good friends from their childhood. Peter knows it is not possible. It will destroy their friendship. In addition Peter doesn't have any feelings for me.
👠 For awhile Peter is in his hometown, after a few days or a week later he'll be far from me. He will be busy at his work, with his new friends. It will be hard to say goodbye to him. Mariln knows right now she needs a Friend like him, who will understand her and calm down her in serious condition. I'll miss Peter. Gonna miss the Evening Adda with him, a cup of hot tea in a pottery cup and waiting for him, "when will he be coming?" After his boarding I'm not going to ask anyone when Peter will be coming? Or is Peter coming too? He changed my chaye taste from Dudh chaye to Lal chaye. This one month I spent with him. Marlin and I will cherish this One month until he comes back to his hometown.

2024.02.20 21:29 DonRedPandaKeys The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining brighter and brighter until midday. - Prov. 4: 18

[ Notice: Not my article. Link: https://4womaninthewilderness.blogspot.com/2018/07/how-does-light-get-brighter_90.html ]
How does the Light get Brighter?
Prov.4:18 reads; "The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of day."
Note that the guidance/light given to the spiritual path of the righteous one is compared to the morning sun. If we observe a sunrise in the morning, we note that the dark starry sky gradually gives way to the arrival of the sun. The darkness gradually fades (1Pet.2:9; Rom.13:12) and a previously indiscernible landscape gradually comes into view as the sun rises higher in the sky. Dan.11:35 helps us to see that the wise (Dan.12:3,10) who were formerly stumbled (Rev.13:7,10; Col.2:8), will be progressively refined and purified, "right up until the end". This means that those faithfully testifying to Christ in the time of the end would display a growth in the light of divine knowledge, and a progressive cleansing from the dark, false doctrine which previously held them enslaved as mental captives (Eph.5:25-27; John15:3; 17:17; 1Thess.5:23; 1Pet.1:7; 2Pet.1:10; 3:14; Rom.2:5-8; Phil.2:15; Dan.12:3). In contrast, Dan.11:27 depicts the unfaithful wicked stewards and false prophets, as continuing to cling to and teach their demonic deceptions (Isa.28:15; 1Tim.4:1; Rev.16:13-15). The end "will still arrive at the time appointed" by God for both sorts (Dan.8:19; 11:35,27; Hab.2:3; Heb.10:36-37; Luke12:43). Prov.4:18 tells us that spiritual light increases at the arrival of morning, "shining ever brighter until the full light of day". Other scriptures speak of this development:
2Pet.1:19 We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
Peter tells us that the writings of the prophets are a guide to God's people during the "night" of Jesus' absence (John12:35-36; Rev.22:5,16; 2:28; Acts 3:20-21; Mal.4:2; 3:1; Matt.17:11), UNTIL that "day dawns, and the morning star, rises in your hearts". We know that Jesus claims to be that bright "morning star". He reveals himself to the proven faithful (John14:21; Rev.2:28; 3:20; Eph.5:29).
Rev.22:16- I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.
There we learn that the morning star (sun of dawn -Hosea 6:2-3; Rev.11:11-12; Luke 1:78) will send his angel/messenger, to give a testimony of the light of Christ, in the "morning" of his arrival (Mal.3:1; Rev.22:16; 1:1; John16:13-14; 13:20). Of that messenger, Isa.60 reads;
Arise, shine your light, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. 2 See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you. 3 Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.
Eph.5:13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything that is illuminated becomes a light itself. 14 So it is said: “Wake up, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.
Rev.11:11 But after the three and a half days the breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them."(breath: John20:22)
How would the spiritual light of the morning star be offered to all through Jesus' messenger?
The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple. (Ps.119:130)
There we learn, that it is by the "unfolding"/unfurling/unrolled opening of God's Words, by which the messenger offers the light of understanding from Christ. Rev.20:12 speaks of this opening of God's Words;
12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and **books were opened.** Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.
Dan.12:4,9-10,3 also speaks of when this will happen;
4 But you, Daniel, roll up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge. 9 He replied, “Go your way, Daniel, because the words are rolled up and sealed until the time of the end. 10 Many will be purified, made spotless and refined, but the wicked will continue to be wicked. None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand. 3 Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. (https://pearl-newscrolls.blogspot.com)
"In the time of the end" the "wise" will have the Word of God, opened to them (Luke 24:32,45; Rev.20:12; 22:10), and they will shine the light the morning star has given them, so that they can be the messengers of Christ in the morning, previous to when he arrives. Of them, Jesus says;
26 To the one who is victorious and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations— 27 that one ‘will rule them with an iron scepter and will dash them to pieces like pottery’—just as I have received authority from my Father. 28 I will also give that one the morning star. 29 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
Jesus gives the morning star, the rising sun, to the one found faithfully doing the will of Jesus and victorious as a conqueror of the world. As we learned, that rising sun is Jesus himself. He gives himself and all the light he gloriously shines upon his return to his Bride (John14:21; Isa.60:1). When this comes to pass, Jesus has finished his course of work in this world of Satan, and God's will during it is completed.
1 The heavens declare the glory of God; (Phil.2:15; Isa.43:21; 1Pet.2:9) the skies proclaim the work of his hands. 2 Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. 3 They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. 4 Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun. 5 It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. 6 It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth. 7 The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. (Ps.19)
Ps.119:130 The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple. (Ps.119:130) Rev.22:17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.
Matt.22: CSB/HCSB 8 Then he told his slaves, ‘The banquet is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy. 9 Therefore go to where the roads exit the city and invite everyone you find to the banquet.’ 10 So those slaves went out on the roads and gathered everyone they found, both evil and good. The wedding banquet was filled with guests.

2023.12.19 10:20 ChrisMcLeanArmy This will be unpopular, but I think Eps 7 and 8 might've been some of the best episodes in Total Drama history.

OFC SPOILERS FOR EPS 7 AND 8 - IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THEM DON'T READ FURTHER

I have dusted off the reddit account in part just to say this. But WOW. I honestly thought episodes 7 and 8 of the new season were some of the best TD episodes I have ever seen.

Okay, let's see if I can break down my thinking;
  1. The challenges were brilliant imo. They were funny premises and felt unique, despite sharing characteristics with older TD episodes. The cornucopia part of episode 7 was a great gag for a couple of minutes. The buzzer idea was fun, kept the episode entertaining. The episode 8 challenge was also fun, they use the mountain to change up the parts of the island they're using and the human pinball game was a fun concept and I'm super impressed with how they kept the idea different from the Japan episode of TDWT.
  2. These episodes were FUNNY. Like I generally reckon these are some of the funniest TD episodes. I don't mind gross-out humour too much but still I loved the lack of it - or fart, barf, ect. gross out humour. Especially considering this was an OWEN + Ripper episode. There's so many good and funny pop culture references and I'll mention them in another point but personally those elevated the episodes a lot for me. Idk but there was barely any pop culture references in previous episodes or even last season so its like the writers room has been going off these last couple episodes. Characters are finding their grooves and even stuff like the eliminations i think worked really well. Some of the sly remarks and jokes just hit. Also like Wayne in episode 8 was so random but so funny. Priya frantically brushing her teeth. Julia's line about her parents was crazy. Julia being Julia in general. MK was funny. A couple of the Wayne and Raj confessionals were also great, especially the one in Ep.8 about Bowie. Ngl the Zee pants thing was a bit weird but they stuck with it ig and at least it worked out in a bit more authentic way.
  3. OWEN just OWEN. Like he didn't affect the plot or anything but it was so amazing having him there. I freaked out when I saw him. Regardless about your thoughts on Owen, it was so nice to see him again and gives us so much hope for future seasons. Fresh knows there is so many of us who loved the old seasons and cast and are supporting the show today. THIS IS WHY YOU SUPPORT THE OFFICIAL RELEASE WHEN IT COMES OUT IN YOUR COUNTRY!!!!!!!! Also, the Izzy reference, the Scary Girl reference was brilliant, especially seeing as we didn't see much of her and Damien this season. AND THE DUNCNEY REFERENCE!?!? THAT WAS SO RANDOM AND 100% THERE FOR US BECAUSE IT WAS SO RANDOM. AND MAYBE A REFERENCE TO CN FORCING THE LOVE TRIANGLE FROM PRIYA??? SO THANK YOU FRESH TV! Also Chris still has a soft spot for Duncan and you know it.
  4. The actual plot points too were really good. The dynamics of the first episode were good, Julia with Wayne and Raj was so reflective of all their personalities and I think it worked really well. (not going to think about how they got milk from that rhino tho...). I liked the throwback to what Emma said in an earlier episode about the chickens and sure the point about Julia working in a bakery as a kid was convenient but tbh it ain't that deep. MK basically getting "punished again" by being paired with Axel and Ripper was great (these two were amazingly funny btw). Also I liked the Damien, Zee, Priya, Caleb team. Sure maybe could've done a little more with Zee here but I really don't mind. But Damien is incredible now and I'm delighted he found the immunity idol. And even the whole Ripper armpit line I think worked well in the end. Is it gross? Yes. Did it work for the episode, also yes. Also I like how Owen didn't mind, yet was disgusted by MK's food, although he has literally ate from the trash on multiple occasions. I'll touch on the eliminations soon. Then episode 8. The Caliya dynamic was fun and I did like how it played out, it's almost like you give the writers time and they'll cook (another post on this coming soon). Meanwhile, the whole Zee-Julia plotline was funny and very on point. MK being a gamer felt on point too. Also Damien is so good, i'll say more in a second. But the seemingly "throwaway" Julia letter joke at the start was funny, so Julia but I also feel that after season 1 and the confessional plotline, we might see it come back later. Wayne disappearing for half an episode was great, just drifting away. And even Zee announcing the secret because his moral compass was so strong was great and fitting. Especially when he didn't give in to Julia. But yeah I feel like the plots of the episodes were great and the season is shaping up nicely. I'll touch on the other plotline later but rn I feel like anyone (with the exceptions of Priya (obvs) Wayne and prolly Caleb) could win and I am excited.

  1. The eliminations felt better. Was the double elimination out of nowhere in terms of the episode? Yes. Did we all know it would be Ripper and Axel? Unfortunately. But I think the way the elimination played out actually worked. Yes, Axel is the better player and yes both of them should've gone home at that point. Ik it's like the Gigette elimination but it feels different, better. Was it in character for Axel, out of anger, to cast off Ripper? Yes. Was it in character for Ripper, without thinking, to throw himself out of the game for Axel (literally)? Yes. I liked the elimination and you can't deny it was funny. Also, based of the challenge it was kind justified anyway. I also liked episode 8's elimination. Sure, Caleb probably deserved to go more, but let's think about decision-making in the moment. Priya would never vote Caleb. She might be heartbroken but she still loves him. Caleb might be sad but he would want to stay on the island to make amends with Priya. They both vote Zee, I'm sure Priya isn't angry at Zee (or maybe she is) but moreso, he's the next most likely to go/most likely to save Caleb. Julia is incredibly vain, so the fact Zee has revealed her secert wouldn't have made her happy. But more importantly her and MK are strategic. In terms of the game, Priya is the best player, so we know she'd be focusing all her anger on Caleb now, like she did with Millie. More importantly, both of them will be off their games, giving the pair more breathing room in challenges and at the elimination, as between the pair, Zee is far more likely to get back in everyone's good books before the next ceremony. That's already 4 votes against Zee. Zee probably voted against Caleb, but it's also Zee so idk. Damien seems to be FRIENDS WITH PRIYA (ik crazy it's like they've barely interacted this season (at least my Pramien ship can take some solace in their friendship)). Wayne and Raj, i mean their confessionals suggested Caleb but they weren't happy with Zee at the campfire and besides, Julia defo could've swayed those two. But also OF COURSE CALEB WASN'T GETTING VOTED OUT, they need to give the plot proper closure. I reckon Priya goes episode 10 though (she defo won't be final 5)
  2. Pop culture reference. These were amazing and SO FUNNY. Both episodes were littered with them. The Damien Toby-Magiure-esque vibes were insane, but Damien actually made it cool. Then the Peter Griffin knee moment, out of nowhere. Like the whole Hunger Games vibe of the cornucopia. Damien with a trident was insanely funny. Especially seeing as it was out of nowhere. Then the amount of Axel and Ripper stuff in that episode was crazy. The Axel "this is Sparta" on MK was great. Then the "paint me like one of your French girls" with Ripper as Rose (obvs) was brilliant. Then the (I think its) Ghost pottery wheel reference was INSANE and possibly one of the funniest things I've ever seen in TD. I think their was maybe another too but I've completely forgotten. Episode 8 was also funny with the whole The Shining reference with MK and Julia was crazy funny. I think they're some more in that episode too but like it's completely gone from my mind. Either way, awesome.
  3. Good characters. We'll start with Axel. Really good, I liked the bits at the start of the episode. The stuff with Ripper was so funny. But yeah their arc was done and it's technically her fault Ripper left too but also in character.
Ripper was also funny, as he has been all season. I'm proud of my boy>! and it feels like his elimination was both deserving and in character.!<
MK was really good, I love the whole friendship plot with Julia. Ngl I kind of want to see where this goes, could be very entertaining and MKulia lives on, although its totally just a friendship.
Julia was herself, brilliant as per. Funny, great one-liners, conniving, just Julia.
Wayne and Raj were great, while comic relief. I still feel like Raj is a final 4 lock, probably finale, so ngl while I love the duo, I wouldn't mind seeing Wayne head soon to give Raj a little more development.
DAMIEN IS THE GOAT. LET THE TD WRITERS COOK. I was worried he was fodder at the start of the season but I am so glad he's back in this game. I love the more confident Damien and he's finally cooking.
Zee was a character I loved in these two episodes. Bro beat the allegations and added something to the plot.>! It's sad to see him go and maybe we could've seen something about his soft drink sponsorship but I honestly don't mind.!<
Caleb is a good character, if a little mundane. I like him, I like his personality and everything with him and Priya works and I like it so he's fine. I don't think he'll make it much further though. 5th probably.
Priya. Okay, so I might be biased. Priya is my favourite, she has been since the promos. But tbh I like this arc. I think it gives her some more depth and while I would've maybe prefered more of a plotline about dealing with her overbearing parents, I can live with this. She'll be gone soon, probably episode 10, but let the girl breathe. She might be one of the main characters (with Julia and Bowie imo), but every show needs ones.
tldr; episode funny, good and fitting
So yeah, there's my review. Like I said, personally, probably the best episodes of the reboot and some of the best so in general imo. All I'll say is let the writers cook.
(Yeah there's no chance I'm proof-reading that. Wow I waffled. Sorry everyone who just read how very incoherent that was)

Also free elimination prediction for the remainder:
7th: Wayne
6th: Priya
5th: Caleb (he said it ep.1 i'm calling it)

2023.12.05 03:28 dumpcake999 S11 e4 summary for those who missed it

Sorry I couldn't stay awake to finish it yesterday so here it is.
They were digging still east of the garden shaft in hole D.5N-27
Dumas guy video called into the war room from his basement. They got their paperwork in order and are ready to rock.
A lot of time jumping this episode - sometimes people are wearing t-shirts and it's sunny and and "later that same day" everybody is wearing fleece or hoodies and jackets and it's really foggy. Sometimes Rick was remote. Sometimes he was on Oak Island.
Peter and Gary dug up a cribbing spike on the beach of Lot 5 and an old scissors handle.
The ladies dug up more pottery shards. A lot of blah blah about why was everything buried deeply and then covered with a layer containing no artifacts whatsoever. Jack is happy to chat and help them with the sifting. Meanwhile, Peter shows up another time. All he does is ask how it's going and then he leaves.
There is an extreme sense of urgency to finish digging east of the garden shaft because Dumas needs to put their equipment in that area. (3 ton hammer grab). It is mentioned half a dozen times at least. "time crunch of all time crunches", etc.
Like others have said, Carmen kind of jokingly banged his fist on the table after examining the 1600s-1700s scissors handle. "I want to see more of these items, not pieces". Carmen is still wearing the source of his power: The Ionic Q-Ray bracelet.
When Dumas guys showed up, Rick gave a little speech..."This is the year..."... "we really want to put a period at the end of this story". Marty said "exclamation mark". Henskee was there and Rick gave a little speech for him and gave him the key to the garden shaft and told him to pass it to Roger (Dumas guy). When Roger opened the lid, the shaft was full to the top with water so they had to get their pump in there. Maybe Rick is starting to believe that there's no treasure. Now he is hoping to find "answers" not "treasure" at the bottom.
Newcomer Moya MacDonald did double duty - sometimes helping Helen with the archaeology and other times she was at the sand sausage table. BTW Steve Guptil sniffed the wood. Whereas last week they thought they found a 7 foot high tunnel, this time they were making excuses about why there was wood at whatever depth (must have been collapsed tunnels).
Special phrases by Dr. Rick:
- he talked a lot but not too many long words
-"one more chance to try to delineate the tunnel that we seek... hopefully something definitive..."
-"when dating artifacts are they pre or post depositional"

2023.09.15 02:47 GrimmSheeper Need to sad vent after now ex chose to end 4 year long relationship.

So my now ex-partner has decided that it’s best for us to break up, and the hardest part about it is that she made the effort to do it as respectfully as possible and had a very valid reason. She knew that breaking up by text would be wrong, and that meeting in person would meeting in person would be a lot of effort for a super awkward situation (we’re currently living about 45 minutes apart due to unrelated reasons, and neither of us drive), so she decided to do it through a zoom call for it to be as face-to-face as reasonably possible. The whole time during the conversation she checked to see if I needed a moment to step away or end the call to work through things on my own. When she said that she wanted to still be friends, she added that she also completely understood if I wouldn’t be comfortable with it and would respect my decision. And when it was pointed out that I still have a big box of her ceramic pottery, she suggested that I was free to smash them if I was upset or wanted to vent anger. The entire time, she made sure that whatever I felt was valid and was ready to accept any blame or frustration. As for her reasonings, she apparently has been struggling with voicing her thoughts and feelings on things for fear that it might hurt or upset people she cares about (not just me, but family and even counselors she’s seen), and after a lot of consideration she came to the conclusion that being trying to maintain a relationship while she’s afraid to communicate about difficult matters would only lead to more harm the longer it continued. Despite how much it hurts, her points were completely understandable and I can’t fault her for them. She’s completely right that it would inevitably lead to strain on the relationship and more pain all around.
I did my best to respect her opinion and choice, but was desperately trying to find some way to mend or handle it. Ultimately, she feels that couple therapy or trying to handle it together would just continue the same problem, and she wouldn’t be able to openly discuss the topic and just form a viscous cycle. I put all this to make it clear that while I may be hurt and feel betrayed, I in no way want her to be portrayed as the bad guy or that she was cruel/callous. It’s a rough situation, and she made the choice that she genuinely believes is best for both of us.
But with all that said in clear, fuck does is hurt. I’m demisexual and she’s demiromantic, so we had established a strong emotional bond. She wants to stay friends and says that she does still care about me, and it’s something that I would like too. But we’re both socially awkward and on the autism spectrum, regularly keeping in touch and casually talking was something we already had to make a conscious effort towards in the best of times. And while it did seem like she was open to the idea of getting back together after she’s gotten things better under control, I know she struggles with showing affection and being the one to initiate, so there’s a near zero chance that she would be able to make the first move were she to get to a point she feels comfortable with (and I’m obviously going to respect her decision and not try to pester her about where she’s at or about getting back together). When I pointed this out, she just got silent for a bit and moved on, so I’m fairly certain she realizes this too.
It will be awkward and will probably peter out, but we’ll still try to do what we can to maintain the friendship. But as for me, I’m now left as an unemployed 28 year old autistic demi with severe depression and anxiety who lives with his parents in a heavily conservative area. I can’t even get behind the wheel of a car without having a severe panic attack, can’t live with people I’m not already close with without feeling like an invader in my own home (and without anyone I know well enough to move in with), and struggle to make connections with people even when the chance is there. So I either have to get a ride from my parents or pay for an uber if I want to go somewhere, can’t afford to move to a more walkable area without taking in roommates (who would cause me to live in a chronic state of stress by simply also living there), and just generally don’t have opportunities to meet new people or get closer to old acquaintances. I’m lucky in that my parents are very understanding and willing to do all they can to support me, and that them being staples in my small southern town means that a lot of people here are also willing to support me. But it’s not the sort of place where I’ll likely share common values or interests with the people here. I’ve seen how they treat people like me that aren’t lucky enough to have an established in, and I don’t quite care to be associated with those hypocritical bigots.
All in all, I know I’ll get through the pain and that I’ll eventually find some way to get by, but damn is it going to be difficult going through it. I know not to try to jump right into another relationship, but it’s something that I do want eventually. And trying to get into the dating scene is already difficult, even more so for a nearly 30 demi with an assortment of mental health issues. But that’s a worry for another day.
Mostly just needed to vent the sadness and grief. Get it into words and expressed to help process it. But if anyone has any suggestions for how to move on or advice on handling situations like this, I’m happy to listen. And if nothing else, thanks to anyone who took the time to just read through it.

2023.08.06 11:42 TringlePringle 125 years ago today...

As the curtain rose on the dawn of professional basketball, Al Cooper was the sport's most captivating protagonist. Possessing magnetic charisma and a gentleman's reputation, Cooper's presence drew crowds in the nascent years of the National Basket Ball League, basketball's first professional competition. His artistry on the court elevated him to a realm of greatness.
Born in Stoke-on-Trent, England, Cooper's first love lay in the realm of the beautiful game; association football. His eldest brother, Arthur, had played in the youth academy of Stoke F.C., soon to be one of the founding clubs of the Football League. Immigrating to the United States when he was 7 years old and settling in Trenton, New Jersey, where his father's skills as a potter of ceramics were in demand, Al was thrust headfirst into one of his new country's most sports-crazed cultures.
Shortly after his 13th birthday, his father died. He was the youngest of six siblings, but the eldest three all had families of their own by this point, leaving Al and his older brother Fred—aged 17—with the responsibility of providing for their mother and sister. Both found employment in the same labor-intensive, low-paying, and unsafe field their father had, at Enterprise Pottery.
In that day, amid the grueling work environment, where dust and heat were constant companions, the potter drew strength from the camaraderie of his fellow craftsmen. They formed a tight-knit community, sharing knowledge, trading stories, and supporting one another through the daily challenges. That shared environment drew Fred and Al particularly close, and when Fred began playing basketball for the Trenton YMCA beginning in the 1893–94 season, Al would surely not be far behind.
Before that had time to occur though, Fred invented professional basketball. The captain of the Trentons, he rented out the local Masonic Hall for the evening of November 7, 1896 and arranged for a game against the Brooklyn YMCA there. Draped in their unmistakable crimson red jerseys, black knickers, and wool socks, for the first time playing in the bounds of what would become known as "Trenton's monkey cage," the Trentons claimed victory in front of a crowd of 700 ($0.25 per seat, $0.15 standing room), a decisive 15–1 scoreline in their favor. The four men who suited up alongside him earned $15. Fred, as the organizer and captain of the team, got $16. He also had the honor of being the first of the five to receive his due payment, therefore making Fred Cooper the world's first professional basketball player.
Fred scored six points in that game, but didn't stand out as a star in the long-term aside from his evasive lateral dribble, with Al Bratton and Will Clayton earning the majority of plaudits as the greatest on-court contributors to the inaugural professionals. The team went 19–1 that year, the lone loss coming in the absence of three starters.
Al Cooper joined the fold the next year, and as his role grew, Fred began to ease off of his own playing duties and transition from captain to a true coach. With Fred the strategic mastermind, taking inspiration from the tactics of the Coopers' home country's favored pastime in order to create a "Y" formation that featured a standing defender, attacking defender, center, right forward, and left forward, Al paired up with Bratton to pioneer an offense built on snappy, short passes that dazzled crowds and led to high-quality shots. Like with his brother's formations, this profound sense of teamwork and innate understanding of the art of passing was fostered by his early tryst with soccer.
During the day, his canvas was the raw, unyielding clay, waiting to be coaxed into pots, plates, vases. After hours, it was his accuracy in shooting that was reminiscent of an artist's brushstrokes on a canvas, his shotmaking being remarkable for the day. Defenders made use of especially rough tactics seeking to deter him, yet his indomitable spirit prevailed, and he outshone defending guards with a virtuosity that knew no bounds.
As Cooper was finding his footing as the best player on the first professional team, Philadelphia and New York began to host rebels against the amateur institutions as well, and by Saturday, August 6, 1898, the first professional basketball league was organized within the confines of Hotel Vendig, at the corner of Filbert St and N 13th St in downtown Philadelphia.
Bill Morgenweck of Camden; James McMurry of Millville; Frank Smith of Trenton; and Herman Kleinman and Harry Jungkurth, both hailing from Philadelphia, stood as the emissaries of five teams, united by a common ambition. Their purpose was to lay the cornerstone for what would become the National Basket Ball League, inspired by the grandeur and prestige of baseball's esteemed National League. The room crackled with anticipation as Horace S. Fogel, a luminary in the world of sports journalism and a decade prior briefly the manager of the National League's Indianapolis Hoosiers, stepped into the spotlight to be elected with reverence to be the league's inaugural president, entrusted with leading the sport into uncharted territories.
The league's architects recognized the need to honor tradition while nurturing the seeds of transformation as discussions and deliberations unfolded. The mission was clear—to craft an entirely new lexicon of rules that would govern the game, shedding the burdens of redundancy and embracing a streamlined vision of the sport's future. Committees were appointed with care, entrusted with the weighty responsibilities of shaping the rules of the game, defining the officials' roles, and curating a harmonious schedule. This marked the birth of a league that would transcend the confines of the hotel's walls.
These five teams were the Camden Skeeters, Clover Wheelmen, Germantown Nationals, Millville Glassblowers, and Trenton Potters. The Hancock Athletics would join them six weeks later.
This assembly did not satiate Fogel, who, together with league secretary-treasurer Peter Wurfflein, set their sights on a grander spectacle. They envisioned a league with 16 teams, stretching across three "districts." Two additional Philadelphia teams were enlisted, alongside representatives from Bristol, Burlington, Yonkers, Queens, and two squads each from Manhattan and Brooklyn.
This ultimately failed to come to fruition, although it veered dangerously close. Those of you familiar with Maurice White and his ill-fated Professional Basketball League of America 49 years later would recognize the peril of overextending a fledgling league beyond its means. You might've just breathed a massive sigh of relief that Fogel couldn't quite pull off the same blunder.
Nearly four months following the league's establishment, on December 1, 1898, Trenton faced off against Hancock in Philadelphia's Textile Hall. What had originated as the simple desire of Fred Cooper and four companions in Trenton to earn a modest sum of $15 while perfecting their ball-throwing skills, metamorphosed into an uprising against Luther Gulick and the YMCA by neighboring teams, and led to an unforeseen sequence of events wherein an audacious sports writer previously disillusioned by baseball management nearly ruined it all by making too bold of moves far too fast, now confronted the tangible reality of a major professional basketball league on the precipice of its debut. The occasion was witnessed by an estimated 900 to 1,000 enthusiasts, not comprehending that they were watching the forefathers of a multi-billion dollar global phenomenon.
The Scotsman Jimmy Hamilton won the tip, gracefully delivering the ball backward to 20-year-old guard Billy Harrison, who would over the next few years prove to be one of better defenders in the sport's early history. Within mere seconds, Harrison found himself whistled for a traveling violation, the league's fresh adoption of a rule additionally categorizing traveling as a foul and granting Hancock a prized free throw opportunity. Ben Reichhardt, a plate printer by trade, stepped up to line and sank the free throw, engraving his name into athletic immortality with a stitched sphere of pigskin rather than his usual chisel.
The story of that particular game deserves to be preserved for its own anniversary. Notable, though, was the unassuming performance of Al Cooper, who tallied just four points before being replaced at halftime, offering no hint that he would lead the league in scoring twice and be the driving force behind the first two NBL champions.
By now, you are well aware of Al Cooper's shooting prowess and passing abilities, rivaling the very best in the sport. However, it was when Gus Endebrock swiftly claimed Hamilton's starting center position and displayed his mastery of the center jump that a third side of Cooper's on-court brilliance shone; the fluidity of Cooper's movements and the grace with which he retrieved the ball from Endebrock's jump ball wins were a spectacle of finesse and athleticism. Teaming up with Harry Stout in the frontcourt, Cooper found an even more harmonious partnership than he had with Bratton. Their dynamic on the court resembled a pas de deux, enchanting spectators with a symphony of precisely executed passes the likes of which had seldom graced the precincts of the sport. As the nucleus of Trenton's team for the next five years, as stated previously, they won it all twice, a feat accomplished under the expert management and coaching of Al's brother, Fred, who simultaneously took on the duties of a de facto advisor to every other team in the league, both on and off the court.
Cooper was one of the only forwards of those first few years to display any defensive competence, and when the tail end of his prime beckoned in the early 1900s, Cooper's versatility allowed him to transition seamlessly to the position of a guard when faced with the elusive agility and shot creation of players like Harry Hough. With the unfortunate disbandment of the NBL shortly after New Year's 1904, Al Cooper's basketball fame waned, and he was overshadowed by the rising stardom of Hough, who became the sport's most celebrated figure. His contributions remained valuable by the time the big leagues returned to Trenton in 1909, and he secured his third and fourth major league championships as a starter and key support figure on a team that was decidedly a testament to player-coach Harry Hough's efforts. Well, he and their owner. Fred Cooper.
Horace Fogel's story is far more peculiar. Serving as president for a brief two-year period, he resigned amidst a power struggle but surprisingly managed to make his way back into MLB, first as a manager and later as an owner. That would be a happy ending if it didn't end with a unanimous lifetime ban from baseball.

2023.06.17 13:49 dwredbaker A. W. Pink on THe Sovereignty of God

1. The Sovereignty of God the FATHER in Salvation.
Perhaps the one Scripture which most emphatically of all asserts the absolute sovereignty of God in connection with His determining the destiny of His creatures, is the ninth chapter of Romans. We shall not attempt to review here the entire chapter—but will confine ourselves to verses 21-23, "Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use? What if God, choosing to show His wrath and make His power known, bore with great patience the objects of His wrath—prepared for destruction? What if He did this to make the riches of His glory known to the objects of His mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory!"
These verses represent fallen mankind as inert and as impotent as a lump of lifeless clay. This Scripture evidences that there is "no difference," in themselves, between the elect and the non-elect; they are "out of the same lump of clay" which agrees with Ephesians 2:3, where we are told, that all are by nature children of wrath, "Like the rest, we were by nature children of wrath!" It teaches us that the ultimate destiny of every individual is decided by the will of God, and blessed it is, that such is the case! For if we were left to our wills—the ultimate destination of us all would be the Lake of Fire! It declares that it is God Himself who makes the difference in the respective destinations to which He assigns His creatures, for one vessel is made "unto honor and another unto dishonor." Some are "the objects of His wrath—prepared for destruction," while others are "objects of His mercy, whom He prepared in advance for glory."
We readily acknowledge that it is very humbling to the proud heart of the creature, to behold all mankind in the hand of God, as the clay is in the potter's hand—yet this is precisely how the Scriptures of Truth represent the case. In this day of human boasting, intellectual pride, and deification of man—it needs to be insisted upon, that the Potter forms his vessels for Himself. Let man strive with his Maker as he will, the fact remains that he is nothing more than clay in the Heavenly Potter's hands! And while we know that God will deal justly with His creatures, that the Judge of all the earth will do right; nevertheless, He shapes His vessels for His own purpose and according to His own pleasure. God claims the indisputable right to do as He wills with His own.
Not only has God the right to do as He wills with the creatures of His own hands—but He exercises this right! Nowhere is that seen more plainly, than in His predestinating grace. Before the foundation of the world God made a choice, a selection, an election. Before His omniscient eye stood the whole of Adam's race, and from it He singled out a people and predestined them "unto the adoption of children," predestined them "to be conformed to the image of His Son." He "ordained them unto eternal life!" Many are the Scriptures which set forth this blessed truth, seven of which will now engage our attention.
"As many as were ordained to eternal life, believed" (Acts 13:48). Every artifice of human ingenuity has been employed to blunt the sharp edge of this Scripture, and to explain away the obvious meaning of these words. But it has been employed in vain, though nothing will ever be able to reconcile this and similar passages to the mind of the natural man. "As many as were ordained to eternal life, believed." Here we learn four things:
First, that believing is the consequence—and not the cause of God's decree.
Second, that a limited number only are "ordained to eternal life," for if all men without exception were thus ordained by God, then the words "as many as are a meaningless qualification.
Third, that this "ordination" of God is not to mere external privileges, but to "eternal life;" not to service, but to salvation itself.
Fourth, that all, "as many as," not one less—who are thus ordained by God to eternal life, will most certainly believe.
The comments of the beloved Spurgeon on the above passage are well worthy of our notice. Said he, "Attempts have been made to prove that these words do not teach predestination—but these attempts so clearly do violence to language, that I shall not waste time in answering them. I read: 'As many as were ordained to eternal life believed', and I shall not twist the text—but shall glorify the grace of God by ascribing to that grace, the faith of every man. Is it not God, who gives the disposition to believe? If men are disposed to have eternal life, does not He—in every case—dispose them? Is it wrong for God to give grace? If it is right for Him to give it, is it wrong for Him to purpose to give it? Would you have Him give it by accident? If it is right for Him to purpose to give grace today, it was right for Him to purpose it before today—and, since He changes not—from eternity."
"Even so, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. And if by grace, then it is no longer by works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace" (Romans 11:5, 6). The words "Even so" at the beginning of this quotation refer us to the previous verse where we are told, "I have reserved to Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal." Note particularly the word "reserved." In the days of Elijah there were seven thousand—a small minority—who were Divinely preserved from idolatry and brought to the knowledge of the true God. This preservation and illumination was not from anything in themselves—but solely by God's special influence and agency. How highly favored such individuals were to be thus "reserved" by God! Now says the apostle, Just as there was a "remnant" in Elijah's days "reserved by God", even so there is in this present dispensation.
"A remnant chosen by grace." Here the cause of election is traced back to its source. The basis upon which God elected this "remnant" was not foreseen faith in them, because a choice founded upon the foresight of good works, is just as truly made on the ground of works as any choice can be, and in such a case, it would not be "of grace;" for, says the apostle, "And if by grace, then it is no longer by works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace;" which means that grace and works are opposites, they have nothing in common, and will no more mingle than will oil and water. Thus the idea of inherent good foreseen in those chosen, or of anything meritorious performed by them, is rigidly excluded. "A remnant chosen by grace," signifies an unconditional choice resulting from the sovereign favor of God; in a word, it is absolutely a gratuitous election.
"Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before Him." (1 Corinthians 1:26-29). Three times over in this passage reference is made to God's choice, and choice necessarily supposes a selection—the taking of some and the leaving of others. The Chooser here is God Himself, as the Lord Jesus said to the apostles, "You have not chosen Me—but I have chosen you" (John 15:16). The number chosen is strictly defined, "Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth," which agrees with Matthew 20:16, "So the last shall be first, and the first last; for many be called—but few chosen."
So much then for the fact of God's choice; now mark the objects of His choice.
The ones spoken of above as chosen of God are "the weak things of the world, base things of the world, and things which are despised." But why? To demonstrate and magnify His grace! God's ways as well as His thoughts are utterly at variance with man's! The carnal mind would have supposed that a selection had been made from the ranks of the opulent and influential, the amiable and cultured, so that Christianity might have won the approval and applause of the world by its pageantry and fleshly glory. Ah! but "that which is highly esteemed among men—is abomination in the sight of God!" (Luke 16:15).
God chooses the "base things." He did so in Old Testament times. The nation which He singled out to be the depository of His holy oracles and the channel through which the promised Seed should come, was not the ancient Egyptians, the imposing Babylonians, nor the highly civilized and cultured Greeks. No! that people upon whom Jehovah set His love and regarded as 'the apple of His eye', were the despised, nomadic Jews!
Just so, when our Lord tabernacled among men. The ones whom He took into favored intimacy with Himself and commissioned to go forth as His ambassadors, were, for the most part, ignorant fishermen. And so it has been ever since. So it is today! At the present rates of increase, it will not be long before it is manifested that the Lord has more in despised China who are really His, than He has in the highly favored United States! More of His people among the uncivilized blacks of Africa, than He has in cultured (?) Germany! And the purpose of God's choice, the reason of the selection He has made is, "so that no one may boast before Him!" There being nothing whatever in the objects of His choice which should entitle them to His special favors—then, all the praise will be freely ascribed to the exceeding riches of His manifold grace!
"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavens, in Christ; for He chose us in Him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in His sight. In love He predestined us to be adopted through Jesus Christ for Himself, according to His pleasure and will. In Him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of Him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of His will." (Ephesians 1:3-5, 11).
Here we are told at what point in time—if time it could be called—when God made choice of those who were to be His children by Jesus Christ. It was not after Adam had fallen and plunged his race into sin and wretchedness; but long before Adam saw the light, even before the world itself was founded, that God chose us in Christ!
Here also we learn the purpose which God had before Him in connection with His own elect: it was that they "be holy and blameless in His sight;" it was "unto the adoption of children;" it was that they should "obtain an inheritance."
Here also we discover the motive which prompted Him. It was "in love, that He predestined us to be adopted through Jesus Christ for Himself!" This statement refutes the oft made and wicked charge that, for God to decide the eternal destiny of His creatures before they are born, is tyrannical and unjust.
Finally, we are informed here, that in this matter He took counsel with none—but that we are "chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of Him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of His will."
"But we are bound to give thanks always to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God has from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth" (2 Thess. 2:13). There are three things here which deserve special attention:
First, the fact that we are expressly told that God's elect are "chosen to salvation." Language could not be more explicit. How summarily do these words dispose of the sophistries and equivocations of all who would make election refer to nothing but external privileges or rank in service! It is to "salvation" itself, that God has chosen us.
Second, we are warned here that election unto salvation does not disregard the use of appropriate means. Salvation is reached through "sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth." It is not true that because God has chosen a certain one to salvation, that he will be saved willy-nilly, whether he believes or not! Nowhere do the Scriptures so represent it. The same God who predestined the end, also appointed the means. The same God who "chose unto salvation", decreed that His purpose should be realized, through the work of the Spirit and belief of the truth.
Third, that God has chosen us unto salvation is a profound cause for fervent praise. Note how strongly the apostle expresses this, "we are bound to give thanks always to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God has from the beginning chosen you to salvation," etc. Instead of shrinking back in horror from the doctrine of predestination, the believer, when he sees this blessed truth as it is unfolded in the Word, discovers a ground for gratitude and thanksgiving such as nothing else affords, except the unspeakable gift of the Redeemer Himself.
"Who has saved us, and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works—but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began" (2 Timothy 1:9). How plain and pointed is the language of Holy Writ! It is man who, by his words, darkens counsel. It is impossible to state the case more clearly, or strongly, than it is stated here. Our salvation is not "according to our works;" that is to say, it is not due to anything in us, nor the rewarding of anything from us. Instead, it is the result of God's own "purpose and grace;" and this grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began. It is by grace we are saved, and in the purpose of God, this grace was bestowed upon us not only before we saw the light, not only before Adam's fall—but even before that far distant "beginning" of Genesis 1:1. Herein lies the unassailable comfort of God's people. If His choice has been from eternity—it will last to eternity!
"Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ" (1 Peter 1:2). Here again, election by the Father precedes the work of the Holy Spirit in, and the obedience of faith by those who are saved; thus taking it entirely off creature ground, and resting it in the sovereign pleasure of the Almighty. The "foreknowledge of God the Father" does not here refer to His prior knowledge of all things—but signifies that the saints were all eternally present in Christ before the mind of God. God did not "foreknow" that certain ones who heard the Gospel would believe it—apart from the fact that He had "ordained" these certain ones to eternal life. What God saw in all men—was love of sin and hatred of Himself!
The "foreknowledge" of God is based upon His own decrees, as is clear from Acts 2:23, "Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, you have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain!" Note the order here: first God's "determinate counsel" (His decree), and second His "foreknowledge." So it is again in Romans 8:28, 29, "For whom He did foreknow, He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His Son." But the first word here, "for," looks back to the preceding verse and the last clause of it reads, "to those who are the called according to His purpose"—these are the ones whom He did "foreknow and predestinate."
Finally, it needs to be pointed out, that when we read in Scripture of God "knowing" certain people, the word is used in the sense of knowing with approbation and love: "But if any man loves God, the same is known of Him" (1 Corinthians 8:3). To the hypocrites Christ will yet say "I never knew you." That is, He never loved them. "Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father" signifies, then, chosen by Him as the special objects of His approbation and love.
Summarizing the teaching of these seven passages we learn that, God has "ordained to eternal life" certain ones, and that in consequence of His ordination they, in due time, "believe." God's ordination to salvation of His own elect, is not due to any good thing in them nor to anything meritorious from them—but solely of His "grace." God has designedly selected the most unlikely objects to be the recipients of His special favors, in order that "no flesh should glory in His presence." God chose His people in Christ before the foundation of the world, not because they were holy—but in order that they "should be holy and without blame before Him." God, having selected certain ones to salvation, He also decreed the means by which His eternal counsel should be made good; that the very "grace" by which we are saved was, in God's purpose, "given us in Christ Jesus before the world began." Long before they were actually created, God's elect stood present before His mind, were "foreknown" by Him, that is, were the definite objects of His eternal love.
Before turning to the next division of this chapter, a further word concerning the subjects of God's predestinating grace. We go over this ground again because it is at this point, that the doctrine of God's sovereignty in predestining certain ones to salvation is most frequently assaulted. Perverters of this truth invariably seek to find some cause outside God's own will, which moves Him to bestow salvation on certain sinners; something or other is attributed to the creature which entitles him to receive mercy at the hands of the Creator. We return then to the question, Why did God choose the ones He did? What was there in the elect themselves, which attracted God's heart to them?
Was it because of certain virtues they possessed? because they were generous-hearted, sweet tempered, truth-speaking? In a word, because they were "good," that God chose them? No! for our Lord said, "There is none good but one, that is God!" (Matthew 19:17).
Was it because of any good works they had performed? No! for it is written, "There is none that does good—no, not one!" (Romans 3:12).
Was it because they evidenced an earnestness and zeal in inquiring after God? No! for it is written again, "There is none that seeks after God!" (Romans 3:11).
Was it because God foresaw they would believe? No! for how can those who are "dead in trespasses and sins" believe in Christ? How could God foreknow some men as believers, when belief was impossible to them? Scripture declares that we "believe through grace" (Acts 18:27). Faith is God's gift, and apart from this gift—none would believe.
The cause of God's choice then lies within Himself—and not in the objects of His choice. He chose the ones He did—simply because He chose to choose them!
