2024.04.29 00:52 PHRateOlympics2024 [200TH RATE] The Popheads 2024 Rate Olympics

Welcome to the 2024 Rate Olympics, hosted by bigbigbee and Jay!
https://preview.redd.it/b5o6mdqstaxc1.png?width=550&format=png&auto=webp&s=4672afb804d32ca9682f09263a644960d1ba359f
Thank you to thisusernameisntlong for designing part of the Rate Olympics logo!
On popheads, we’ve been holding games called “rates” for a long time - almost eight years, now. Rates are competitions of songs against each other. Therefore, for our milestone 200th rate ever (!!!), we decided that a good way to honor the spirit and history of rates would be to theme this rate after one of the world’s biggest and best competitions: the Olympics!
Over the past three weeks, 40 songs have been selected to compete in this year’s Rate Olympic Games: 20 voted in during the Opening and Closing ceremonies, and 20 personally sent by the winners of a series of minigames played in the Popheads Discord #rates channel and Daily Discussion thread. The songs eligible for this rate were any previously rated song that has never made the top ten (all Top 10 songs from past rates were discovered to have used performance enhancing drugs 🙁 and therefore were disqualified in the name of fairness and healthy competition).
The final track list is:
  1. ABBA - Voulez-Vous
  2. APRIL - Oh! My Mistake
  3. The Beatles - Penny Lane
  4. BLACKstreet (ft. Dr. Dre & Queen Pen) - No Diggity
  5. Brandy - When You Touch Me
  6. Britney Spears - Womanizer
  7. Carly Rae Jepsen - Fever
  8. Charli XCX - Claws
  9. Charly Bliss - Percolator
  10. CHVRCHES - Asking for a Friend
  11. City Girls - Act Up
  12. Death Grips - I've Seen Footage
  13. Fall Out Boy (ft. Courtney Love) - Rat A Tat
  14. Flo Milli - Beef Flomix
  15. George Michael - Freedom! 90
  16. Girls' Generation - I Got a Boy
  17. The Goo Goo Dolls - Iris
  18. Jamie xx - Loud Places
  19. Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity
  20. Jay Sean - Down
  21. Jolin Tsai - Honey Trap (美人計)
  22. Kendrick Lamar (ft. Jay Rock) - Money Trees
  23. Kesha - Take It Off
  24. Kid Cudi (ft. MGMT & Ratatat) - Pursuit of Happiness
  25. Lady Gaga - Judas
  26. LOONA - LOONATIC
  27. Mariah Carey (ft. Ol' Dirty Bastard) - Fantasy
  28. MARINA - How to Be a Heartbreaker
  29. MARINA - Bubblegum Bitch
  30. Mark Kealiʻi Hoʻomalu & Chorus [Lilo & Stitch] - Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride
  31. Mitski - Washing Machine Heart
  32. Owl City - Fireflies
  33. Porter Robinson & Madeon - Shelter
  34. Post Malone (ft. 21 Savage) - Rockstar
  35. Slayyyter - Daddy AF
  36. Taylor Swift - Begin Again
  37. Ted Poley & Tony Harnell [Sonic Adventure 2] - Escape from the City
  38. The Veronicas - Untouched
  39. The Weeknd - Secrets
  40. Wolf Alice - Play the Greatest Hits

The Rules (What is a Rate?)

Here is how rating works. For a general overview, please watch this video!
Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity: 10 the real insanity was that this didnt win its original rate
This is the ONLY correct way to write a comment. Any other format, such as the below, will break the rate machine program, and will get your ballot rejected until it’s fixed.
Porter Robinson & Madeon - Shelter: 10: I love anime ❌
CHVRCHES - Asking for a Friend: no one asked you (2) ❌
If you want to change scores or add comments after sending your ballot, feel free to send a message to this account or to u/bigbigbee. Additionally, both hosts are active on the Popheads Discord, so if you have Discord you can message us at @you.lose or @bigbigbee. The server's #rates channel is a blast, very welcoming, and always filled with great music discussion - come join us!

2024.04.28 21:18 worriedjacket /r/NixOS Slap Fights About the Ethics of AI Drone Strikes

I'm going to give my TLDR of the slapfights in the subreddit
There's larger drama that spills outside of reddit on this but the TLDR is Anduril is sponsoring NixCon(an in person convention about NixOS) and people aren't too happy about it. A detailed explanation of the community drama can be found here if you care.
This culminated in one of the community members and Anduril employees receiving a temporary suspension to the project. The primary reason as I can surmise is because they were kind of a jerk about being against gendeminority representation in leadership.
Drama Thread 1
Employee of Anduril gets a temporary suspension from the NixOS Project, turns to the subreddit to say goodbye. https://www.reddit.com/NixOS/comments/1cd5fod/in_case_im_unable_to_return_wish_you_all_the_best/
Goodbye! You have made yourself difficult to be missed!
Thanks derpface!
No problem! Your username remind me of someone who is directly complicit in creating tools used in a genocide, and who actively concern trolls about minorities. Cannot think of his name for the life of me, though.
link
After some digging, it appears that the root of this is that nix maintainers are limiting the involvement of people who work for defense companies (read: weapons manufacturers). ...
Why would that be reasonable? Those people make weapons that keep you safe. You’d be the first in the corner in a puddle of piss and years of you were invaded because your country didn’t have proper “weapons” to protect you.
Those weapons killed my innocent family members, 2 young girls who never hurt a fly in a war that probably happened before you knew how to type.
link
Hope you slip and fall into an unassuming volcano, or something equally awful
Thanks
link
You did your best to prevent any constructive discussions and successfully failed to show any growth or sympathy.
Errmmmm ackshyually you are the one stifling constructive discussion good sir! Constructive discussion is when we never listen to minorities of any kind
link
To be fair you lost me when you called the need for minority representation "discrimination", again and again, like 10 times in the same thread. You failed to acknowledge the power dynamics at place, and how a "non political" stance just hurts us by default. And what's worse you just dismissed the need to hold a wider conversation on the basis of your own feelings about privilege and discrimination, while ignoring what people were telling you repeatedly 💀 Edit: See? That's why we just leave these spaces. Fuck the alt right and everyone who classifies ethnic and sexual minorities as "political", you ruin good spaces with your toxic waste of ideologies.
I'm an anarchist/libertarian "barefoot in the garden" ecology-loving homestead veteran hippie, with a decent sized LGBTQ+ friend group since I live near Seattle. They are good people if it weren't for the fact that most of them are lawyers.
link
Drama Thread 2: Clarification on why guy from thread 1 was suspended. https://www.reddit.com/NixOS/comments/1ceeg8h/transparency_about_jonringers_suspension/
Disgusting. Labeling a man based on an idea that would've been logical pre 2020. So much hearsay and putting words into his mouth. DEI needs to go away, as it is a plague of exclusion and oppression Olympics. It has no place in a free society. It has no place in open source. It's cultural shift with good intentions but naviagted terribly. Nix, this is just wrong and your hearing the man but not listening.
link
Is this about the project excluding defense companies? If so that doesn’t make sense to me. Open source should just be tools and allow anyone to contribute.
It's about control over Nix, and the defense sponsor was just the issue being seized upon.
link
If you label me as a "racist fascist bigot", then anything I say is malicious.
You've been posting like this a lot over the last couple days. This attitude indicates to me that you are not actually planning on changing anything about your behavior, and you don't actually take any criticism levied against you seriously. You simply frame it as a ridiculous caricature that can be discarded and ignored. So the whole "I take full responsibility" thing rings fairly hollow.
Who the fuck cares? Stop trying to wrangle out some kind of twisted confession. We have churches and preachers to do that. He's a volunteer... He doesn't owe you Anything. When are you going to stop being obnoxious.
link
Drama Thread 3
Multiple community members quit the project. Some because of the AI Drone strike thing, some because Guy from thread 1 got banned.
https://www.reddit.com/NixOS/comments/1ceqprq/fifteen_contributors_have_officially_removed/
I for one support LGBTQ inclusion in autonomous murder drone manufacturing. It’ll fix both issues.
link
That's great, I don't disagree in principle. But what are we going to do about all the people leaving over this, though? A significant maintainer just left over the Anduril sponsorship fiasco, and over a dozen others have followed him. I think this deserves some airtime and discussion.
thats great, but what are we going to do when the unchecked mod team banned everyone that contributes and doesnt share their opinion? They clearly shift the allowed debate in their favor. This allows them to shape this project after their own liking. this deserves some discussion, but the mod blatantly flag or ban every critic they see. there is no healthy or solution oriented debate to be had under those conditions.
link
The thought of any of my work contributing to someone's death by drone makes me feel physically ill. This can be said about almost any open-source contribution. In fact, it can be said if you pay taxes in almost any well-developed nation (that uses drones to defend itself). A $10k per year sponsorship is pocket change. But heck, you can even think that's $10k they have less to spend on drone parts.
link
Why not try to be apolitical? For example here "used for horrific things" "People have morals"
"horrific things" arent absolutist? you are saying horrific People with morals means, that their side side is the good one that isnt absolutist? 2) If you take money from everyone, how not take it from one company could be political? Or at least less than not take it? 3) I would agree that isnt good argument, but not absolutist. You can still be against it, protest against, work against it etc. If he said for example "In fact, it can be said if you pay taxes in almost any well-developed nation (that uses drones to defend itself), so why try?" I would agree with you.

2024.04.27 19:51 DemandOk9914 Countries That Are Participating in the 2024 Summer Olympics (Updated on April 27, 2024)

Countries That Are Participating in the 2024 Summer Olympics (Updated on April 27, 2024)
Tip: Some countries are not going to participate in this year's Summer Olympics. Here are some examples.
  1. Haiti is not going to participate because of its famous instability.
  2. Belarus and Russia are not going to participate because of sanctions imposed during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Instead, they will participate under the Individual Neutral Athletes organization.
  3. Sudan is not going to participate because of its ongoing war with the Rapid Support Forces.
  4. Somalia is not going to participate because it is unstable and is still fighting a years-long conflict.
  5. Yemen is not going to participate because it's fighting a major conflict with the Houthis. Fortunately, the Yemeni government is a key ally to us. However, the Houthis have controlled Sanaa, the capital city for more than nine years.
  6. Afghanistan is not going to participate because a significant portion is mostly controlled by the Taliban, the Islamic State, Al-Qaeda, and other Islamic terrorist groups; and the Taliban will not allow women to participate because they think women are less.
  7. Myanmar (or Burma) is not going to participate because they're fighting another civil war.
  8. North Korea is not going to participate because its relations with the United States are very hostile.
  9. For unknown reasons, it is not confirmed if some West African countries are going to participate or not.
  10. In case you were wondering why I didn't include Malawi, you might want to guess in the comments section below.

2024.04.23 18:46 Dreijer_ Was the Socialist Workers Party's response to the 1972 Munich massacre antisemitic?

The Munich massacre was a terrorist attack carried out during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany, by the Palestinian militant organization Black September. 5 Israeli athletes and 6 Israeli coaches were killed.
The Militant is the Socialist Workers Party) newspaper. From The Militant issue published September 15 1972 "The Munich killings":
The deaths of 11 Israeli participants in the Olympics on Sept. 5 brought forth a hypocritical uproar of indignation from government officials and news media in capitalist countries around the world. The purpose of this campaign is to make the criminal look like the victim: to make Israel appear as the victim of Arab violence rather than the criminal oppressor of the Arab peoples.
Leaving aside for a moment an evaluation of the terrorist tactics used at Munich, it is imperative that all supporters of human rights should stand squarely on the side of the real victims: the Palestinian people who are struggling, to regain their homeland against the Zionist state of Israel.
The campaign to whip up anti Arab hysteria began immediately after the incident, with banner headlines condemning "Terror at the Olympics" and "Murder in Munich." President Nixon called the guerrillas "international outlaws," and a State Department statement labeled them "outlaws, brigands, murderers and an intolerable affront to human society." Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern joined in the chorus, urging international sanctions against Egypt and Lebanon to "root out these international outlaws."
The entire publicity campaign is designed by the capitalist rulers to bolster the image cultivated by Israel as a small, defenseless country at the mercy of the Arab people. The reality is the opposite.
The full article can be read here and continues on page 6.

My Bruar Bazerman when he came out the army he walked so fast I basically had to run to keep up with him.

Race walking at the Olympics - Wikipedia

I watched Olympic walking and it looked to me like running as I swear everyone was completely off the ground and to be walking there must be one foot on the ground at all time.

2024.04.21 16:46 VonMansfeld Almost a year of practicing archery and struggling with improvement. [Long post]

I had been hesitating with writing this post for a bit of time (since February 2024), because I don't like to complain publicly and I have been looking for solutions of my problem(s) so far.
Forewarning and context: I am on autism spectrum, ADHD and DCD (dyspraxia). All diagnosed (ADHD and DCD since early childhood; AS since 13 years old). Also, I struggle with depression, albeit well under pharmacological & psychiatrist care. Beside of that, I'm not a native English speaker, I live in Poland (based on Warsaw). It's going to be a long post.
I've started my journey with archery in the end of May 2023. Long story short, my first bow was Rolan Snake "60 (22 lbs) and in between August and September, I've switched to my current bow, Oka Ridge Boga "68 (35 lbs). I've managed to make a such poundage jump. As you may guess, my archery category is BHTR-RB/'traditional-hunter'. Not a modern olympic barebow (a.k.a. "Barebow").
All was fine and neat up until February 2024, when I've noticed that my progress halted. "Learning curve hit it's temporary plateau, as it goes like sinusoid", I thought and moved on. I hardly can describe myself as a "self-taught" archer, as I've received tons of guidance and help from members of the archery club to which I belong to. I've been in a couple of lessons with a coach specializing in field archery. I've practiced indoors too, asking local coach for tips too. For instance, they corrected me about to not making strange twists and turns with my upper body. [I'm writing that because there will be questions about it, foremost]
In the meantime, I've got a opportunity to participate in a couple of field archery (3D and 2D) amateur tournaments. I was at last place at my first one. However, I've managed to not get the very last one (penultimate mostly, sometimes better). My peak performance was achieveing 11th place out of 18, at 3D+2D amateur tournament with WA-like rules (two arrows, 10-8-5-0). I went twice on even more amateurish and local contests (including one at Viking-Slavic fair) and I got a second place twice.
OK, I am getting to the point. Since two months, I've experienced shortfall of my performance. While I've managed to recognize my mistakes (mostly form, but also anchor deficiencies, poor release, too quick release) and sort it out, I repeat the same mistakes once again, with some random "fashion" of former mistake showing on again when I rooted down a current one. I feel like I have very limited control (abysmal body awareness, thanks to AS/DCD combo) about how my body actually works under both tension and the requirements of having certain body parts and muscles not going stiff (no death grip, release hand working only as a leverage, etc.). Seasonal increase of intensity of my depression didn't help either.
Obviously to say, I'get tense when shootings goes wrong, especially when I'm convinced that "I am aligned myself correctly", but the arrow goes differently because I was aligned wrong/differently.
I've already made some decisions in order to chill and calm down, plus to mitigate limited "RAM" in regards of fine motor control and body control. For instance, after a couple of April's tournaments I've decided to only go for tournaments where I can travel by myself (no social pressure, when I rely on someone's good will to travel deep into the country). I've invested with loop earplugs, to lessen the auditory input. So far, I recognized that my archery performance is intristincally linked to my current (ephemeral) mental state and my emotional state. There are moments when I can focus on my shooting and achieve somewhat tight (relatively speaking) groupings or at least 4-5 arrows going in a single direction. And sometimes, even when I take a care of a shot, the arrow goes extremely to the left (or sometimes to the right, bur rarer), because I wasn't aware that my body decided to align and hold the form much differently for this shot. So far, my only reliable test is "indoor 16 meters to 80 cm 6-10 shield [48 cm in diameter]":
Also, I've noticed that I have a problem with properly setting my bowhand, when I need to make an adjustment for arrow drop.
What I expect from you is to get an advice. How to get along with abysmal/very poor body awareness, with DCD, when practicing an archery? My own physical and neural capabilities are somehow limited and it's an awful feeling, when I know that something exact went wrong with that shot, but I don't have a guarantee that my next shot will be better after making a correction (I mean, correction of the mistake, not correcting my alignment sideways). It's like fighting with my own body, when I have a clear mental picture of what I should do, but the nerves and muscle groups goes as they please in details during a drawing procedure. I don't want to abandon archery, as it is my gateway for physical activity and development (alongside other, but non-physical).
I am also considering of changing archery discipline. My first thought is a compound bow, with potentialy more stable anchoring, using sights as a guidance (offloading fine motor skills, muscle memory and intuition to analytical thinking process, when aiming) and less tension while holding an arrow. I could simply go for olympic target bow, but I personally don't vibe with that discipline and also - at least here in Poland - it is "least fun type of archery" at least for me and perhaps most elitistic and offish one. Another idea is to go straight into traditional/re-enactment archery, as to ditch out my own mental burden of trying to shoot accurately and simply having fun with engaging with the history topics. However, the latter one has even more demanding technique at the beginning, while still I have quite beginner archery capabilities...
To not get lost in the post, archery happens to be a really good indicator of how much DCD affects me. While having mediocre archery skills at best, still Im shooting better than I'm throwing sticks, rocks or javelins. I want to enjoy the archery, make steady (even if slow) progress and get the feeling of not returning to the worse place I've have been before. I know that I will never become a really good archer, not with my conditions and being overweight 33-years old. Perhaps I need to find an entire different purpose of practicing an archery...

Phish, 2024-04-21 Sphere, Las Vegas, NV, USA
Setlist: https://phish.net/setlists/phish-april-21-2024-sphere-las-vegas-nv-usa.html
Tour: Not Part of a Tour
Show Notes:
Phish, Friday 04/21/2023 (1 year ago) Hollywood Bowl, Hollywood, CA, USA
Gap Chart, Tour: 2023 Spring Tour
Set 1 : The Moma Dance > Sigma Oasis , Party Time , Strawberry Letter 23 , Everything's Right , Shade , Funky Bitch , A Wave of Hope
Set 2 : Sample in a Jar > Down with Disease 1 > Mercury -> Blaze On 2 > You Enjoy Myself , Cavern
Encore : Drift While You're Sleeping
1 Unfinished. 2 Lyrics changed to reference "Bowl."
Jamchart Notes:
Down with Disease - In lieu of lead-pointed playing, Trey sets the initial tone by tossing out spacious chords and arpeggiations. Page synths and hazy Trey delay paint the scene before a slightly dissonant transition space develops. The band then dials up the grime to deliver a sludge-y, stomping minor key rock-out. Ample time is spent in the murk before fading out > "Mercury."
Show Notes:
Down with Disease was unfinished. Blaze On's lyrics were changed to reference "Bowl."

Phish, Thursday 04/21/2022 (2 years ago) MSG, New York, NY, USA
Gap Chart, Tour: 2022 Madison Square Garden Spring Run
Set 1 : Suzy Greenberg 1 > 46 Days , Plasma , The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday > Avenu Malkenu > The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday , Wolfman's Brother , Esther , Ghost
Set 2 : Chalk Dust Torture 2 -> Tweezer > Also Sprach Zarathustra > Maze , About to Run , The Mango Song > Harry Hood > Character Zero -> Tweezer -> Character Zero
Encore : A Life Beyond The Dream , Tweezer Reprise
1 Dedicated to the "hero of the song," Suzy Greenberg, who was attending her first Phish show. 2 Unfinished.
Jamchart Notes:
Wolfman's Brother - Straightforward in structure, this version builds momentum by way of clever full band interplay. Trey makes his intentions known right away by shifting through multiple effects, toggling between lead playing and funk-oriented rhythm comping. The rest of the band follows suit, as the jam develops into a laid back, conversational groove session. This then patiently builds to the classic, spirited "Wolfman's" ending.
Ghost - The jam begins with an upbeat tempo anchored by cool playing from Trey. Later, the tempo slows as Mike takes the lead with deft work on the bass. Just when you think the chunky notes of the song from Trey are leading to the end of the jam, the rest of the band isn't quite ready to let things go, which leads to a maelstrom of a peak, before finally returning to end the song.
Chalk Dust Torture - Heads into low-key psychedelia-tinged jamming out of the song proper thanks to Trey's thick and goopy effects, then Page suggests major key and a pleasant groove emerges with Mike steadily holding down the fort. The jam gets more delicate and dreamy, even as Fish keeps his usual rock-solid tempo, then builds to a marvelous rock-out climax and a big-time peak thanks once again to Mike's efforts. -> into a great "Tweezer".
Tweezer - Although "average-lengthed" among all versions e'er performed, this gem-of-a-version shines, with the first few minutes of the jam featuring steady, intermittent, "Your Pet Cat"-esque chording and comping by Trey, and a melodically charming/glittering section during which Trey sustains a note for many measures (a modest peak) over excellent accompaniment (that's never dark), before the version concludes atypically with a single chord from Trey that is sustained into the first note > of "2001."
Character Zero - Trey loves MSG, a fact made clear here, when, in lieu of capping the set with a typical "Hood," he elects to floor the Garden, moving from zero to sixty in split seconds, bouncing around the room with typically rocking play (featuring a "Heartbreaker" tease) which, surprisingly, breaks for "Tweezer."
Tweezer - Your Pet "Tweezer" returns, buzzing, if not quite purring, for a few more minutes.
Character Zero - -> from "Tweezer" to cap a fun, inspired close to a set rearranged and redefined.
Show Notes:
This was the rescheduled date for the show that had been postponed due to the Omicron variant of COVID-19 surge in New York City in December of 2021. Suzy Greenberg was dedicated to "the hero of the song," Suzy Greenberg, who was attending her first Phish show. Trey teased Jean Pierre in 46 Days. Chalk Dust Torture was unfinished. 2001 contained Super Bad and Martian Monster teases. Mike quoted Kung and teased Plasma in Harry Hood. Trey teased Heartbreaker in the first Character Zero and Tweezer in the second Character Zero.

Set 1 : Chalk Dust Torture , Sparkle > Foam , Glide , Split Open and Melt , The Lizards , Down with Disease > If I Could > Cavern
Set 2 : Also Sprach Zarathustra > Maze , Fluffhead > Mike's Song > I Am Hydrogen 1 > Weekapaug Groove , Scent of a Mule , Big Ball Jam > Possum 2 , Amazing Grace 3
Encore : Drums 4 -> Jam 5 -> All Along the Watchtower 6
1 "I walk awakening on the misty fields of forever" lyrics. 2 All Fall Down signal. 3 Without microphones. 4 Carter Beauford on drums. 5 Dave Matthews Band. 6 Phish debut; Dave Matthews Band.
Jamchart Notes:
Possum - Intense jam rocks the house, hard. Great Fish and Page.
Jam - With the Dave Matthews Band. -> in from "Drums" featuring Fish and Carter Beauford. A rocking and very percussive jam with both bands playing along together builds into a good groove which slows and -> to "All Along The Watchtower."
Show Notes:
Foam contained a brief Dixie tease from Trey and Possum contained an All Fall Down signal. The guest trampoline jumper during Mike's Song was then-nine year old fan Katherine Lang. Hydrogen contained the lyrics "I walk awakening on the misty fields of forever." Amazing Grace was performed without microphones. The Drums Jam featured Carter Beauford of the Dave Matthews Band; the rest of the encore (including the Phish debut of All Along the Watchtower) featured the entire band. Phish, Wednesday 04/21/1993 (31 years ago) Newport Music Hall, Columbus, OH, USA
Gap Chart, Tour: 1993 WinteSpring Tour
Set 1 : Buried Alive > Poor Heart , Foam , Guelah Papyrus , Maze , Colonel Forbin's Ascent > Fly Famous Mockingbird > Rift , Punch You in the Eye , I Didn't Know 1 , Run Like an Antelope 2
Set 2 : Possum , Mound , Split Open and Melt , The Squirming Coil , The Horse 3 > Silent in the Morning , Big Ball Jam > Mike's Song > The Great Gig in the Sky , Weekapaug Groove 4 , Gumbo
Encore : Sweet Adeline , Cavern
1 Fish on trombone. 2 Simpsons, Key Change, Tritone Down, and Random Note signals. 3 Trey on acoustic guitar. 4 Unfinished.
Jamchart Notes:
Run Like an Antelope - Unusual, intense and improvisational jam that almost sounds like a "SOAM" jam at times.
Split Open and Melt - The jam from this fiery, intense version was attached to the end of the song "Demand" on the studio album Hoist. In a 1994 interview, Trey noted this performance marked the beginning of a watershed, 14-month period, during which the band really clicked and coalesced on "SOAM's" complex jam rhythm. Not surprisingly, the golden age of "SOAM" overlaps with this 1993 - 1994 period of technical mastery considerably.
Weekapaug Groove - Nice interplay between Trey and Page in the breakdown section, then the jam seems to be headed for home with a fiery peak, but instead veers off-course into more improvisational jamming, gradually diminishing unfinished, and (arguably) > to "Gumbo."
Show Notes:
The jam segment of this Melt is the one that appears at the end of Demand on Hoist. The Mockingbird Narration contained a quote of the Winkie Chant ("O-Ee- Yah! Eoh-Ah!") from The Wizard of Oz . I Didn't Know featured Fish on trombone and The Horse featured Trey on acoustic guitar. Antelope contained a Divided Sky tease from Trey, an I'm a Man (Spencer Davis Group) tease from Page, and Simpsons, Key Change, Tritone Down, and Random Note signals. Trey teased Fire (Ohio Players) in Possum. Mike's contained a brief Oye Como Va tease. Weekapaug was unfinished. Gumbo contained a Free Bird-style ending.

Gap Chart, Tour: 1992 Spring Tour
Set 1 : Suzy Greenberg , Uncle Pen , Split Open and Melt , Rift , Guelah Papyrus , Possum 1 , It's Ice > Eliza > NICU , Bouncing Around the Room > David Bowie
Set 2 : Dinner and a Movie , Colonel Forbin's Ascent > Fly Famous Mockingbird > Tweezer > Tela > Mike's Song > I Am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove , Weigh > Cold as Ice > Catapult 2 > Cold as Ice , Hold Your Head Up > Lively Up Yourself 3 > Cold as Ice , Sanity 4 , Maze , Sweet Adeline 5
Encore : Cavern
1 Simpsons, Will the Circle Be Unbroken?, Get Back, Oom Pa Pa, All Fall Down, Aw Fuck!, and Me and My Arrow signals. 2 Only Mike; a cappella. 3 Phish debut. Trey on drums, Fish on bass, and Mike on guitar and his only known performance on vacuum. 4 Yastrzemski and Carl mentions from Mike and Trey. 5 Without microphones.
Jamchart Notes:
Split Open and Melt - Very improvisational and exploratory jam with excellent dynamics modulation. Awesome Mike and Trey.
Possum - Extended intro with many signals and "DEG" teases. Great jam that has a nice swingy feel to it before going full throttle.
It's Ice - Good jam and nice work by Page on the Hammond B-3. Segue to "Eliza."
Tweezer - Very melodic, enchanting jam in part. Still among the coolest versions in history.
Mike's Song - Played at slightly slower tempo, the jam includes great Mike, "HYHU"-like jamming, then a tense, spiraling jam. The 2nd jam has some unusual descending riffs, dissonance, and more spiraling tension.
Weekapaug Groove - Simmers at a rather low intensity early on with Trey's playing noticeably restrained. The jam works its way into an improvisational segment with building tension, after which the expected musical fireworks go off. Includes teases of "Happy Birthday to You" and "Linus and Lucy" as well as a birthday announcement from Trey.
Show Notes:
Trey teased Johnny B. Goode in Melt. Possum contained Simpsons, Will the Circle Be Unbroken?, Get Back, Oom Pa Pa, All Fall Down, Aw Fuck!, and Me and My Arrow signals, as well as strong Dave's Energy Guide teases. Dinner and a Movie was preceded by a Colour My World (Chicago) tease and quote. Trey used an interesting voice effect during the Mockingbird narration as he spoke of the evil King Wilson. Mike's included a Hold Your Head Up jam. Hydrogen and Weigh were announced as written by baseball Hall-of-Famer Carl Yastrzemski. Trey called Mike "Carl" prior to his Weigh bass solo. Weekapaug contained a Happy Birthday tease and dedication from Trey, as well as a Linus and Lucy tease from Mike. This only known Phish performance of Lively Up Yourself featured Trey on drums, Fish on bass, and Mike on guitar and his only known performance on vacuum. The Cold as Ice outro was followed by a brief vocal jam about the band's comments on their performance of Lively Up Yourself. Sanity contained Yastrzemski and Carl mentions from Mike and Trey respectively. Cavern was introduced by Mike as The Prison Joke.

2024.04.19 19:37 freifraufischer Olympic qualifying competitions shouldn't be held in countries where potential medalists can't go.

I'm really glad that the geopolitical situation didn't decide the Olympic spots on rings. I have nothing against Simonov but it would have been a shame for Azerbijan to benefit from the fact that Armenian athletes don't feel safe competing in a country that has repeatedly in recent years been in armed conflict as the aggressor
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nagorno-Karabakh_conflict
The reason that Azerbaijan can host international sporting events is because their travel ban on Armenian citizens excludes international athletes. But that doesn't mean the Armenians feel comfortable or safe in Baku. It's really a shame on FIG for allowing an Olympic Qualifier there.
Nikita Simonov is not responsible for his country's repeated aggressions against it's neighbors. He absolutely should be in Paris because he is a potential Olympic finalist on rings. But for a while it looked like Azerbaijan was going to benefit from the situation.
And this is certainly something to think about as people consider that Azerbaijan is routinely talked about as a potential emergency host for the still as yet homeless 2025 World Championships.
* Before you respond with something about Russia/Belarus, it's important to know that neither country is banned "because of the war" alone. It was because it was the 3rd violation of the Olympic Truce by Russia in 14 years. The Olympic Truce is a formal internationally recognized concept saying that you don't start armed conflict during the period of the Olympics and Paralympic Games, and declared by United Nations resolutions. The Russian Federation used the opening of the 2008 Olympic Games to invade Georgia. It used the 2014 Olympic Games on their own soil as a distraction during their invasion of Ukraine the first time, and the 2022 Invasion occurred during the Paralympic Games. If the Russian Federation had waited 2 weeks they would be competing today.
The IOC has been extremely clear all along that this was about the Olympic Truce and their ethical obligation not to allow the event to be used this way without response.
No other country has ever violated the Olympic Truce.

2024.04.19 15:34 HotTeaCofee Bollywood could bring feminism to the masses. Why doesn’t it?

Article from The Washington Post
A few days before the release of 2016 Bollywood hit “Dangal” (“Wrestling Bout”), which is based on the true story of two medal-winning Indian female wrestlers and their father, the filmmakers unveiled a promotional music video. In the video, the two actresses who play the wrestlers are seen mostly in silhouette while Indian superstar Aamir Khan — who plays the father’s character — is seen on a throne, atop a chariot, sermonizing all around him in verse.
This, unfortunately, is an all-too-accurate representation of the film — and encapsulates a problematic trend in mainstream Bollywood: While plenty of Bollywood films take on gender inequality and women’s experiences, frustratingly few do so in women’s voices, and their attempts at feminism thus fall short.
The narrative around “Dangal” leading up to the film’s release revolved around female empowerment, and with good reason. Its real-life subjects, the sisters Geeta and Babita Phogat, are an inspiration for countless Indian families. Geeta qualified for the 2012 London Olympics, the first Indian female wrestler to do so. Their achievements are rendered more extraordinary by the fact that they hail from Haryana, a northern Indian state with a highly unequal sex ratio — 879 girls to 1,000 boys, going by the latest census in 2001 — and documented practices of female feticide and dowry payment.
To its credit, “Dangal” has put the spotlight on female excellence in sports and stimulated a national conversation on sports other than cricket, which dominates headlines otherwise. On the film’s opening weekend, Geeta became the most Googled celebrity in India. The governments of six Indian states, including Haryana, exempted the film’s tickets from taxation and endorsed it as part of their campaign to protect and educate girls. (I have two young nieces; since “Dangal” took over multiplexes, the running joke in the family is that they will be made to learn wrestling.)
However, this neither undoes nor atones for an extremely disturbing element in the film: its gender politics. It is true that Geeta and Babita’s father, Mahavir Singh, was instrumental to their success, but the film suggests that he was the sole reason for it. In real life, Geeta had a promising and award-filled run up to the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, where she won the gold medal in the 55 kilogram (121 pound) category. However, the script for “Dangal” creates fictitious subplots designed primarily to punish Geeta for harmless displays of independence and freethinking and to elevate her father. That she chooses to grow her hair and polish her nails — against Mahavir’s wishes — leads to (imaginary) failure inside the ring. By the end of the film, we see Geeta grovel and beg him for mercy — and it is his magnanimity alone that ensures that her career gets back on track.
“Dangal” is, sadly, not an aberration. Last year also saw the release of “Pink,” a much-hyped legal drama about three young women who are sexually harassed by a group of influential men. The film aimed to tackle issues that Indian society has long been criticized for, such as misunderstandings around consent, stereotypes about sexually active women and institutional apathy toward victims. However, the voice the film relies on for addressing these topics is that of another male Indian superstar, Amitabh Bachchan, who plays a heroic lawyer emerging out of retirement to help the women. Throughout the film’s courtroom proceedings, the three women are shown as impetuous, emotional and high-pitched characters who need a man’s discipline.
Another 2016 Bollywood hit, “Sultan,” a sports drama headlined by superstar Salman Khan, follows along the same lines. In the film, the female protagonist is an accomplished sportswoman herself, but she is reduced to an object of conquest for her male counterpart. Midway through “Sultan,” she gets pregnant — dashing hopes of sporting glory forever — a profound crisis that the film dismisses in one glib scene, choosing instead to focus on the male’s celebration. By the climax, she is merely standing on the sidelines, cheering for her husband.
Hollywood has frequently been lambasted for deployment of the “white male savior” trope, in which people of color are rescued (often from clumsy representations of their own cultures) by enlightened white men. Bollywood is often guilty of the gender equivalent: The female empowerment in these films is often just a form of male gratification. There is little autonomy or agency on the female’s part; she would be lost if left to her own devices. The burden of her improvement and happiness ultimately fall upon the man’s shoulders.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, “Dangal,” “Pink” and “Sultan” were all directed by men from scripts also written by men, which is a shame: Bollywood has no shortage of talented women artists capable of producing strong work. Ashwini Iyer Tiwari, for instance, is a female director whose film “Nil Battey Sannata” (Good for Nothing) was released in 2016. It is also a story about an overbearing parent and a respectful but rebellious daughter. In contrast with “Dangal,” however, “Nil Battey Sannata” presents its female characters with innate respect: The mother’s anxiety is relatable; the daughter’s chafing is a moving cry for help. In terms of inspiring dramas based on real-life women, “Neerja,” about the courageous head purser of the hijacked Pan Am Flight 73, was co-written by a woman and refrained from any paternalism while bringing forth genuine thrills.
With women writers and directors like these around, there’s no need to refract women’s stories and experiences through male creators. Often, doing so fails to honestly reflect women’s interior lives and agency, which makes for underwhelming drama. With a potential audience of hundreds of millions of people, Bollywood should use its influence to make sure that viewers are hearing women’s stories in women’s words.

Season Breakdown and 1896 All-Americans
This year is interesting in a few ways. First, it is the first time since 1869, that a school outside of the modern Ivy League claims a championship. With Lafayette going 11-0-1, and being given the title by two selectors, the National Championship Foundation, and Parke H. Davis, both of which split their championships with Princeton. Both of these teams lone tie was actually between each other as well. But Parke H. Davis loves this Lafayette team. In the book that Davis wrote, he doesn't say much about the 1896 season overall, but he mentions one game from this year in his chapter titled "Eight Famous Games." He describes the game between Lafayette and Penn as this.
Lafayette on the defensive, with the score 4 to o in favor of Pennsylvania and only six minutes to play, blocks the latter's kick. In two plays [Lafayette's] Barclay carries the ball 35 yards for a touchdown, from which he kicks a goal, winning the game 6 to 4.
Either way, he speaks highly of this 1896 Lafayette team. I wonder who the coach of this team is... Oh... It's Parke H. Davis.... Well that makes sense. Well let's see if they survive this years playoffs.
We also have our first appearance with a team we'll be seeing for the next few years, but does not exist anymore. Carlisle Indian. Looking at this name you have one of three reactions. Either "What is this school?" or "Wow that's a great football school" or absolute horror at the existence of such a school. It has a troubling history, but there are two videos I really would like readers to watch to get a general gist of its existence. But I must warn you, it isn't a happy history by any means. First is Extra History's video on the topic, and then Hardcore College Football History's video on how that history ties in with the football team.

No. 3 Penn @ No. 2 Lafayette - Another defensive battle, Penn tries to avenge their lone loss vs Lafayette, but Lafayette scores the killing blow in ANOTHER last minute touchdown. The Leoaprds win 4-0 and move on to play Princeton in a chance to win repeat championships!

The Championship Game at the Polo Grounds III, Manhattan, New York, NY

An over capacity crowd has gathered here in Manhattan, as anywhere around 38,000-40,000 have come to see this matchup between historic powerhouse Princeton, and the team who has found so much recent success Lafayette. The last time these teams met, it ended in a 0-0 tie. This won't be the case as there must be a winner in this game. Princeton takes about 15 minutes to get their first score, a 35 yard field goal. Lafayette has a chance to respond the next drive, but misses the field goal. This will be the story of the entire game. Lafayette throughout this game will have FIVE chances for a field goal and miss each one of them. Princeton has only three scoring chances and takes them, as they get another field goal and a touchdown with a missed PAT. Princeton wins 14-0 as they capture their ninth national championship, and stop a repeat champion from happening.

2024.04.18 16:25 Quackmotard Days Until the Draft Player Profile Series: Randall Cunningham

One week away folks! 7 doesn’t really have any players that were drafted by the Vikings, but this was a fun Wiki read. There’s a lot about Cunningham outside of his Vikings and football career I didn’t know.

BEFORE VIKINGS

Cunningham was born in Santa Barbara, California, in 1963. His older brother Sam would also become a future NFL player. He attended Santa Barbara High School, and was a graduate of the class of 1981. As a senior, he led his team to a League title and the CIF Finals. He also competed in track and field at SBHS in the high jump; his elder brother Frank was the state champion in the shot put.
He then went on to attend the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). He was a 1983 and 1984 College Football All-America Team selection as a punter. In 1984, his senior year, he led the UNLV Rebels to an 11–2 season—still the school's only 10-win season ever—however this was adjusted to 0–13 when it was found out several players were ineligible.
Cunningham was drafted by the Eagles in 1985, and had a decent career as a starter there until 1995, making the pro bowl in 1988-1990, and 2nd team all-pro in 1988. Cunningham tore his ACL in 1991, and had a few injury riddled seasons before retiring in 1995.

VIKINGS

Cunningham joined the Vikings in 1997 after being out of football in 1996. Vikings' coach Dennis Green called him when he was on a job site for his granite business. There he reunited with former Eagles wide receiver Cris Carter. In his first year with the Vikings, he orchestrated two late scoring drives to bring them back from a 9-point deficit to defeat the New York Giants in an NFC Wild Card game at Giants Stadium, 23–22. However, the Vikings lost in the Divisional Round to Steve Young and the San Francisco 49ers.
Cunningham enjoyed the greatest season of his career in Minnesota during the 1998 campaign when he guided the Vikings to a 15–1 regular season record with 34 touchdown passes, only 10 interceptions, and 3,704 passing yards. Cunningham had a good supporting cast that year with Cris Carter, rookie Randy Moss, and Jake Reed at wide receiver and Robert Smith and Leroy Hoard at running back. Cunningham led the league with a 106.0 passer rating while the Vikings scored a then-NFL record 556 points during the 1998 season, making him the first black quarterback to lead the league in that category.
Cunningham claimed the Vikings' Monday night 37–24 victory over the Green Bay Packers was "the greatest night of my football career". He threw for 442 yards and four touchdowns. However, the Vikings ended up being the first 15–1 team to fall short of the Super Bowl, losing to the underdog Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship Game by a field goal in overtime.
During the early stages of the 1999 season, after throwing nine interceptions in just six games, Cunningham was benched again, this time in favor of Jeff George. After the team announced that second-year quarterback Daunte Culpepper would be the starter prior to the 2000 season, Cunningham was released.

AFTER VIKINGS

After the Vikings, Cunningham played as a backup and started some games one year for the Cowboys and one year for the Ravens before retiring in 2001.
After retiring from football, Cunningham returned to UNLV to finish his college degree in Leisure Studies. Cunningham has also been active in the Gospel music business since his retirement from the NFL by opening a recording studio and producing Christian worship music. Cunningham, a born again Christian, became an ordained Protestant minister and founded a church called Remnant Ministries in Las Vegas in 2004. In 2020, Cunningham became the team chaplain for the Las Vegas Raiders, replacing former team chaplain Napoleon Kaufman, who stayed in Oakland when the team moved to Las Vegas.
In December 2009, Cunningham was hired by Silverado High School in Henderson, Nevada as the offensive coordinator of the school's varsity and junior varsity football team. His son, Randall Cunningham II, was a freshman quarterback for the Skyhawks.
On June 29, 2010, one of Cunningham's children, two-year-old son Christian, drowned in a hot tub while unattended at the family home in Las Vegas.
In August 2011, following a rumored spat with Silverado's head coach, Cunningham resigned his coaching position at SHS. His son, Randall Jr, withdrew from SHS and registered the same day at Bishop Gorman High School, a private Roman Catholic school in Las Vegas.
In March 2013, Cunningham authored Lay It Down: How Letting Go Brings Out Your Best (Worthy Publishing, ISBN 9781617951275). The book shows readers how to work out the “lay it down” principle in all phases of life.
In December 2014, Cunningham was named head coach at Silverado High School. In his rookie season as head coach, he and his staff turned the football program around from a previous record of 3–7 to a 2015 record of 7–4. The team recorded its first playoff victory since the year 2007. He helped coach two National All-Americans who were chosen to participate in the Blue-Grey All-American Bowl games. Cunningham was not retained as coach at Silverado High School after two seasons in April 2017.
His daughter, Vashti Cunningham, is a track and field athlete who competed in the high jump at the 2020 Summer Olympics, placing sixth overall.

This season was unfortunately..... not very good. The Millennials struggled big time, and only a couple of them were ever able to gain a footing in the game. Not to mention the fact that we had 3 medevacs and a quit, which just sucked the life out of what was already a predictable and kind of lackluster season.
Despite all of that, there was a still a couple decent players and a few fun idol plays. Juliana did a great job at working her way into the final 3 while maintaining a good social standing with everyone. She wasn't particularly amazing at any one thing, but just had a nice overall game which was enough to get her the win.
Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments, and stay tuned for the sign-ups for season 33! As well, the sign-ups for the final season of DK's Celebrity Big Brother will be posted soon, so keep a look out for that too.
