2024.04.29 04:55 Fearless-Tadpole-319 Forced to go up to 5mg

Hey I know the shortage has made it difficult for all of us- I’ve only been on Zep about 3 weeks, and I’ve had great success so far, I’m a fast looser from what I’m gathering.
Due to my mail order pharmacy- and insurance- I’m being titrated up to 5mg from 2.5mg.
I’ve been searching the pages but I’m just looking for some experiences- anyone who lost on 2.5mg- did you continue to loose on 5mg and if you had side effects on the 2.5mg, did they increase?
I’m a day away from the end of week 3, 4th shot of 2.5 on Monday night, and I’ve lost 17.6 pounds. And 18.5 inches around my chest/back, waist and hips. Which is amazing. I am eating approximately 1200 calories a day, nutrient dense foods, drinking water, staying hydrated.. I have PCOS and am on other meds to help Zep level hormones and it’s definitely changing my body chemistry in a good way..
Just curious if anyone could give me their experience.
(I’m 5’7-5’8, 36, and my starting weight was 283/284- my GW is 140-150) Thanks!

⚠️ Trigger Warning: Disordered Eating, Mental illness, and Religion
Final thoughts: 🤔 What have you learned in the last 3 weeks via approx. 399 monetized posts or in the last week via 144 monetized posts to help you on your weight loss/health journey?
I learned that Kylea Gomez glorifies disordered eating in the name of Jesus for monetary gain. She ate 1/4 to 1/5 of her allotted WW points most days of this cruise via photo evidence and posts. I learned she is a vain, narcissist, who I believe is mentally ill, and will exploit anything and everything to live a frivolous lifestyle. She is not budget-wise, financially savvy, and should pay her debt(s). She has NO business offering any form of budget or financial advice.
In general, I am frustrated with social media influencers and paid content creators who REFUSE to disclose how, when, and why they are paid. Your "followers" should know the details of your social media income from the platforms and companies you work with so we can make an informed decision of how we spend our time and money. There is a fine line between advocacy/education/influence and dishonesty/hypocrisy/lack of transparency and accountability.
I am fortunate to have grown up without social media. To all influencers and content creators, we don't NEED you. Quite the opposite. Many of us lived without you once. We can do it again. We will hold you accountable.

2024.04.29 04:12 mishmashca Got a tortoise from an expo in Canada, it died in 4 days, what I learned from this experience.

Hello, this is awkward for me as i am not one to post long winded stories online
However, my recent experience with purchasing a Russian tortoise has been incredibly heartbreaking.
I share my story to give new tortoise owners some advice.
  1. If you buy a new tort, I HIGHLY recommended going to a breeder or locally owned store that offers health guarantees. Ask about this.
  2. Do more research on who you are buying from ask for pictures and testimonials specific to tortoises.
  3. Id also take a photo of your set up and send it to the breedeseller day 1 to confirm that it is done to their standards (as with every person has different opinions on whats good and bad) And document everything at least for the first couple weeks.
4.I would also probably suggest a yearling if possible or at least a hatchling older then just a couple of months.
  1. Lastly if ANYTHING seems weird contact the breeder.
This might seem like commonsense but I totally missed the mark on all of these.
I definitely regret my purchase since I'm out a lot of money and without a friend :(
Review/What happened:
I got my tort at an expo close to home. I set him up and he seemed ok. He was active in his tiny container at the expo. While he moved around after a soak .My tort was not eating and slept a lot. I waited figuiring he was stressed out and needed time to adjust. I had also googled how much do tortoises sleep because i was concerned. My first mistake was not calling the breeder. But please keep in mind no one thinks that a pet you JUST brought home has an issue..
He was given dandelion, mixed greens , cucumber and the mazuri pellets. He did not eat any of it. Not even a little.
Reflecting i remember worrying about how hard it seemed for him to walk over the cypress. He also did not pick his body up off the ground fully. But i didn't know all of this was a red flag till after he died.
4 days after bringing home my baby Russian tortoise it passed away. I called immediately and I looked for advice from the breeder as i was in shock that he had died.
Afterwards I found I still had a lot of questions. So I went online and also spoke to a local reptile supply store and peers. I asked everyone because i thought i had killed him. Quite literally everyone agreed that death in 4 days is not only rare but seemed unlikely based on the care I gave the tortoise. Several individuals suggested he was already sick. This is also recognizing as a newbie my husbandry was not perfect.
Some quick notes: He died by the food away from the lamps probably in the afternoon. When i found him the ambient temp was in the low mid 80's. I misted the substrate regularly and soaked him once per day after i got him. He was on a mix of substrate. Mix was 1/3 Zoo Med's Forest Floor, 1/3 Zoo Med's Eco Earth®, and 1/3 Zoo Med's ReptiSand. This was taken off the zoo med website. I later learned sand was bad even in this mix and could later cause issues. He had a basking light and a bulb for uv. One was mercury vapor (as suggested by the breeder). Lights were turned off at night.
I contacted the breeder and asked for a replacement or full refund pointing to other places who have health policies. As far as i could tell from his fb /website there was no policies listed.
A few days later he respond to my email with an offer of shared liability and as goodwill he would give me a discount on a purchase of a new tortoise.
Instead , I requested at least half of my money back (an equivalent to his discount).
The final response i got was saying the discount on a new purchase what all he could offer. Nothing else.
Im super aware of the fact that he has no obligation to refund me even in part. But considering he offered me 50% off a new tort i couldn't see why he couldn't just return half back as it would ultimately work out the same for him.
If your from Canada on the west coast i got this tort from the vancouver reptile expo from Arachnophiliacs. However the experience leaves me saying i would not recommend him for tortoises.
I am currently watching two spots for a future friend. If anyone has made it to the end if you have any breeder suggestions for canada particularly in metrovancouver let me know.
Thanks for reading
-M
TLDR: do more research on breeders ask more questions.

2024.04.29 03:04 mining_moron Kyanah Food and Drink Road to Hope

Kyanah are obligate carnivores, a fact which obviously influences their diet to a strong degree. Virtually all of their calories come from some form of meat, eggs, or other animal products; while some plant matter can be safely consumed, they derive little or no energy from it and would eventually starve if placed on a vegetarian diet for some reason. Thus plant-based foods are usually only added in small amounts to meat-based dishes for flavor or micro-nutrients (which could usually be gotten from meat as well); animal products are around 90% of the average Kyanah's diet, depending on the region. The actual meat consumed by Kyanah varies a lot by region and culture, with animals from all major categories being consumed somewhere in the world, but walkers tend to be the most common and crawlcritters (the closest analogue to insects) are usually avoided except in desperate times or very poor and undeveloped city-states. In Ikun's cuisine, nyruds and tyukruds account for the significant majority of all meat consumed--perhaps unsurprising as the rud suffix indicates a livestock animal--with thukukens coming in a distant third. Though cuts and preparation styles vary considerably depending on the dish. The plants that they do consume, albeit in small amounts, tend to be spices, tubers, or "nuts". These nuts aren't botanical nuts in the same sense as Earth nuts, due to the paucity of seeds and complete nonexistence of fruits. However, similar-looking structures do exist in some structured plants, where many species store spores inside hard-shelled structures that, when mature, crack open to release large quantities of spores; the immature forms of these structures are called "nuts" by Kyanah. Leafy greens are taboo in most cultures, as they are seen as livestock food and also have an emetic effect in large quantities. Attitudes towards fungi vary widely and are not taboo in Ikun, but also not very popular.
Ikun is a melting pot city-state with hundreds of specialty stores and restaurants selling food from all regions of the world--with varying degrees of authenticity--but has its own mainstream cuisine as well, which is obviously high in meat. Nyrud or tyukrud steaks are an obvious choice--either as-is or with other ingredients on the side and sauces to dip it in--and a favorite of picky eaters and/or lazy Kyanah, but plenty of other options exist. Whole nyrud ribs are usually shared by entire packs (nyruds are very large animals) with each member taking turns to take a bite out of it. On the other end of the scale, ground-up nyrud, tyukrud, or other meats can be mixed with the eggs of these very animals and smaller amounts of the aforementioned tubers and "nuts" to create a sort of "salad". This mix can be eaten as is or stuffed into the gas bladder of a juvenile thukuken, or a tyukrud stomach, or wrapped tightly in cooked skins or thin strips of roasted meat. Various blood or animal oil based sauces exist, which are used to provide flavor and moisture. Fried bits of wingbeast wings and thukuken gas bladders, flavored bone marrow, and jerky-like strips of dried meat are common snack items. Meat cubes, consisting of one or more ground meats stuck together with eggs and sticky sauce and shaped into a cube, and sometimes subsequently fried, can be eaten as either a snack or full meal, depending on their size. Lower-grade meats are sometimes dried, powdered, and used as a condiment on other dishes. Spices are heavily used in Ikun and most northern cuisines, though in the far south, where spice plants are typically not as common, there is more of an emphasis on flavoring meats via salting and drying, or cold smoking. Hatchlings, whose teeth have not yet fully developed, eat chewed up and regurgitated food, which can be provided by any adult in their pack, or sometimes even older siblings; Kyanah have a specialized pouch in the upper esophagus to store food for this purpose.
As Kyanah biochemistry uses water as a solvent, they do naturally drink water more than anything else. Packs with a lot of money are often water snobs who will pay a premium for water that was bottled in some particular city-state, usually one with historical or religious significance, or just one that has a particularly nice mineral profile--despite the fact that any mineral profile can be created synthetically, and the Water Distribution System tends to mix water from different regions anyway. Flavor packets are commonly used to enhance the flavor of water; these tend to be savory or even bitter rather than sweet. As Kyanah haven't evolved to consume large amounts of sugar, and a lot of the bacteria found in spoiled meat on their planet produce saccharin as a by-product, so sweet tastes are generally avoided (the average Kyanah really wouldn't like cake even if a biochemically compatible version were somehow made). The blood of various animals, most commonly nyruds, is also drunk, either straight up--it's often considered to be very refreshing on a hot day, when chilled--or as the base for various sauces. This substance has a distinct indigo hue, much like the blood of the Kyanah themselves, or most other animals on their planet, for that matter. It appears that ethanol has a fairly similar effect on Kyanah as on humans and alcoholic beverages have thus existed for thousands of years. However, the means of creating the Kyanahs' alcoholic drinks is quite different; it relies on strains of microbes unique to their planet that produce alcohol from amino acids rather than carbs or sugars. Naturally, this means that most such drinks are produced from "fermented" meat or blood. Roontkak, made from tyukrud blood, is the most popular alcoholic drink, both in Ikun and the broader world. The Kyanah have also been able to replicate this process using plant-based proteins found in tubers, nuts, and fungi. This process was discovered a few thousand years after the meat-based alcohols and tends to produce a slightly weaker drink, but it's rarer and harder to make, so tends to carry a connotation of culture and sophistication, while something like roontkak is seen as a lowbrow drink for the masses. Common plant-derived alcoholic drinks include roontyeti, from the tubers of the tyeti plant, and roonwerkdda, from the nuts of the werkdda bush. These tend to have spread to Ikun's region of the world from the far north and far south, where suitable plants for making alcohol are more common. Either alcohol category can be distilled to create the Kyanah version of hard liquors, which are usually denoted by the suffix -tyot (literally "strong" or "dominant").
Additionally, capsaicin is a psychoactive and moderately addictive drug to Kyanah, with a sizable chunk of the population smoking the dried and powdered skins of various endoskeleton plants that have evolved to use capsaicin to deter herbivores. Though in southern hemisphere cultures, it's more common to mix it into a tea and get high on capsaicin that way. Such mixtures usually contain no more than 2% actual capsaicin; purified industrial-grade capsaisin is much stronger and more addictive and restricted by many governments. There is no minimum age for substance use (nor any minimum age to do anything else, since adulthood is determined solely by separation from the birth-pack, regardless of the age) in most Kyanah societies, so it's up to the adults in a young Kyanah's birth-pack wehther they can access these items. However, it's seen as perfectly normal in Ikun society for older children and adolescents to be given small amounts of alcohol or some of the milder capsaicin variants on festive occasions, to partake with the adults.
Kyanah in most societies typically don't use personal utensils, instead simply taking food with their hands; at most they use ladles or tongs to take food from serving dishes. Rather than using their teeth or knives, they typically use their powerful neck muscles to rip away bite-sized chunks of whatever they are eating. In formal dining environments, eating gloves are used to keep their hands clean, but at home or in more casual venues, nobody really cares. As Kyanah drink by lapping rather than sipping, shallow bowls rather than cups are used for liquids; drinks are only kept in bottles for storage. Technology has advanced to the point where synthetic meat is fairly common and cheap, using colonies of genetically engineered microbes to essentially grow meat like a crop inside industrial tanks, with artificial flavoring being added to simulate various actual meats. While often cheaper than real meat, it has its limitations; it can only create homogenous patties rather than the complex textures of an actual animal, while there's no scientific evidence that they're unsafe, many feel that they're unnatural or unhealthy. So this tends to mostly be food for the poor. However, it has also found a use as military rations during the Kyanah invasion of Earth, as it would be stupid to try to farm livestock in space, or on an alien planet in the middle of a war zone.
Eating is generally not a social occasion for Kyanah, it's seen as something of a private and vulnerable time, when they're weak and in need of nourishment, not strong and ready to defend or advance their pack's position in society (most Kyanah won't absolutely refuse to eat if outsiders happen to be around, but all else being equal, most will prefer to have only the company of their own packs). So it's very rare for them to eat or drink with anyone who isn't already in their pack, unless they don't have one yet, or want to expand it. Even ikoin who go "together" to eat out somewhere will split up into their own separate areas and just eat with their packs. So their restaurants and bars--which still exist, as even Kyanah, much like humans, often like eating professional-quality food without having to prepare it for themselves--have a considerably different layout and atmosphere. Usually there will be a bunch of stalls where diners can sit and eat while being walled off from other Kyanah while still providing a good view of the kitchen via a curtain or window so they can keep an eye on their food being prepared. Mid-range establishments will usually just have the food and drinks, and few other amenities, while higher end ones have more elaborate measures to draw in diners and justify their price points, from ornate cushions, aromatic sprays, and elaborate light displays all the way to live music, holographic movies, and other performances like reenactments of historic duels and combat challenges, which diners can either open their window to get a good look at or ignore and eat in peace.
Since the end of the Utopian Wars, the traditional Kyanah dining experience has been steadily losing ground to fast food (DakDakDak--literally FastFastFast--being the most popular one in Ikun, with over 64 locations) and drone deliveries. The former allows Kyanah to simply come in, choose from the premade meals that are currently on the shelf, pay, and leave, or (for a premium) put in a special request, though these establishments by nature have limited menus and little room for customization; they will often use AI to predict what to make ahead of time, with high accuracy. While the latter allows them to avoid the hassle of dealing with anyone outside their pack entirely, while still getting high quality food. The one exception to the general dynamic at Kyanah restaurants and bars would be those that cater to the packless; these are set up to encourage rather than discourage interaction, as their entire purpose is for young adult Kyanah who have recently separated from their birth-packs to find love for themselves. To this end, such establishments have elaborate sets of rituals and social rules to attract the attention of other individuals. As a day on the Kyanah homeworld is only about 15.75 hours, there are customarily only two meals, the very creatively named day-meal, eaten before the beginning of the workday, and night-meal, eaten after the end of the workday. Though many do eat snacks during the day, especially if working physically demanding jobs.
In terms of inter-species compatibility, as humans and Kyanah are both carbon and water based life forms, most human foods wouldn't kill a Kyanah, nor vice versa (with a few niche exceptions, such as chocolate or grapes) neither species can properly digest the other's food and would likely throw up if they tried to eat a significant amount. Interestingly, hard liquors of either species are largely exempt from this, as they're mostly just alcohol and water anyway, while weaker booze like roontkak or beer has impurities that would definitely not be appreciated by the digestive system of the wrong species. During the post-war occupation of Earth, Kyanah have also been known to import chili powder into their occupied regions, apparently for the sole purpose of smoking it.

2024.04.29 01:56 RenTenn Company won't pay for me to attend conference I'm presenting at.

I work for a Consulting firm full time but volunteer with a museum on the side. A project that I started on as a student with the museum (not involving my job) will be going public soon. What I do with the museum and my job is in the same line of work. And this museum and other involved groups are clients of ours.
The museum requested that I present my project at a conference so I asked my company if they would fund for me to go. They decided they would only pay me my wages for the time it takes to drive up, present, and drive back(roughly 8 hours) They made it sound like there wasn't money and that since this project wasn't related to my job they didnt want to fund it. I figured that was fair, until I found out that 4 of my coworkers will be attending this conference fully funded (ie. Housing, mileage, food, conference fees) and they are not presenting at all.
I'm torn because I think once my project goes live my company will want to post about me on the company website. The petty person in me wants my company to stay out of it and not be involved in my success, but I also want to show them what they're missing. I do understand this is a corporation and they don't truly care about me.
I need advice on how to handle this. Do I be petty and not talk about it at work or involve anyone at my job? Or do I really play up what I did and embrace it at work. Has anyone ran into something like this before? If so what did you do and do you think it was the right choice?
Tl;dr: my company won't pay for me to go to a conference I'm presenting at, but is paying for four of my coworkers to go even though they aren't presenting. Do I let my company be involved in my success?

2024.04.29 01:24 Significant_Froyo_79 Bana Witch Hunter Robin Singer

Hello everyone, I did a deep dive into the mystery of the singer Bana, who sang both the opening and ending themes for the Witch Hunter Robin anime, with help from two Redditors. After making a post on this subreddit 2 years ago, a kind Redditor saw my post a year after on the Witch Hunter Robin subreddit asking about the singer, and they gave me a link to The anime news network page. Which showed that the real name of Bana is Chino (高柳) Takayanagi (千野). That website page also has a link to her blog, which is an online diary that dates from 2004 to 2012. After using that information, I then went to the Japanese music subreddit to ask further questions and got help from a knowledgeable person there.
The singer's blog link is still working, and I used Google Chrome to automatically translate the page into English. The last time the singer updated the blog was back in 2012. Based on the information from the Anime News Network page, I believe that the singer is around 45 years old. Her name is Chino Takayanagi, and she is credited in 67 albums and 2 products. That information can be found on the VGMdb website if you look up her real name there. Her aliases are Bana and Chino. Just looking up her name on Google, I found her on the Hello! Project Wiki fandom page that shows more credits she has. Apparently, she also works as a vocalist and frequently appears in the chorus of Hello! Project songs.
On the Nautiljon website, I found this information: Chino Takayanagi started playing the piano at the age of 3. After her 10th birthday, she developed an interest in the stage and performed in numerous shows and plays. At the age of 18, she began dancing, and it was during this time that she discovered her love for singing. In her early twenties, her teacher recognized her singing talent, which led her to participate as a backup singer in songs for various artists and in various commercials.
By searching her name on Google, I saw that she’s on the Last.fm website, where it states that she is a studio singer and songwriter, performs as a backup vocalist, and does commercial jingles. She was also the lead vocalist (referred to as "Chino") of the Japanese indie band Still...You turn me on. The other members are TSUKASA (Tsukasa Fujit), Keiji 'Jizo' Nakamura, and Ami. With the help of a Redditor on the Japanese music subreddit, they managed to come across TSUKASA's website, which hasn't been updated. That website has a page dedicated to the Still...You turn me on band. They used Flash and the Wayback Machine website to find out that they released a mini album that has six songs in 2002 through Parade Corporation and a single in 2004 that has three tracks (titled 傷ついたボクの羽根を広げて). These releases seem to be still available through Tower Records Japan.
You can also find them on the website of Tower Records JP. This band has been on hiatus since 2012. The Redditor also managed to find the single called 傷ついたボクの羽を広げて (Spread my wounded wings) on YouTube. If you're curious about how the six songs from the 2002 mini album sounded, click on the Wayback Machine website link. Once there, look for the navigation link located in the header menu and click on Music. The website will then display four songs from the 2002 mini album, which you can listen to.
On the Still...You turn me on band's website, I clicked to see her profile bio, and I translated it using Google Translate. What I found was that her zodiac sign is Cancer, her favorite car is a Honda Accord, her favorite food is Chili Beans, and her least favorite food is anything that smells fishy. Her favorite color is orange, and she loves colors mixed from non-primary colors. Her favorite artists include Björk, Fiona Apple, Kate Bush, Pink Floyd, Sheryl Crow, Garbage, The Beatles, Portishead, and the Bulgarian Voice. The first CD she bought was Yumi Matsutoya's album "The Gates of Heaven." Her favorite books are poetry by Sakutarō Hagiwara, Grimm fairy tales, and works by Kaori Ekuni. As for movies, her favorites are "Murder in the First" (1995) and "Gladiator." The instruments she uses are a Yamaha piano, a Stafford acoustic guitar, an Elk semi-acoustic guitar, and Sony headphones (model CD900st).
Currently, Chino Takayanagi sings in a band called Harashin.Chino & Friends, whose music can be found on YouTube and various music platforms. They have released an album with 13 songs titled 'TWO PIECES OF SOUL' and an extended play with 5 songs titled 'BLACK POWER'.
When you look up Chino Takayanagi on Apple Music in Canada, you'll find her song used as the opening and ending theme in episode 8 of the Gundam Evolve (OAV) anime, titled 'Soldier.' Additionally, she performed the second opening of the Transformers: Galaxy Force anime, titled Ignition' by CHINO, and collaborated with Shinji Kakijima in the song 'CALL YOU... For the Future of You and Me.' In You're Under Arrest: Full Throttle anime, she also sings in a duo group called AA-CHINO. The second singer's name is Aa (Akane Umezawa). They both sing the anime's opening song, Mighty Body. Her and that singer also sing insert songs Hayaku Koikoi Wrecker-sha, Dareka Honto no Watashi wo Shitte, and Yuuenchi. All these songs have their full versions on Apple Music under the artist name AA-CHINO for this anime. If you can't find Yuenchi, which is a solo song Chino does in the anime, just look up ゆうえんち by CHINO on Apple Music or on Youtube.
Chino Takayanagi also sang in the Uta Kata anime, performing "Donuts House no Miss Lyan" and an insert song in episode 3 called "Kono Natsu wo Kakaete" with Sachiko. Additionally, she sang the Fate/Stay Night (PC) ending theme called "Days" and a song in the L/R: Licensed by Royalty anime called "Breath of the Sky." She also sang the theme song for the film Senrigan (2000), titled "No One Knows Me." Furthermore, she sang "Nishi no Taka" and can be heard in the chorus of "Juu no Ashiato" on the Burst Angel original soundtrack perfect edition, which can be found on YouTube.
I hope that people will find the information I compiled about the singer enjoyable. I've included the references below.
I sincerely thank u/Se_ra_phin_ne from the Japanese Music Subreddit and a deleted Reddit user from the Witch Hunter Robin Subreddit for their help in directing me to the right sources to find information about the singer, especially u/Se_ra_phin_ne, who provided significant assistance. She's truly adept at locating information about the singer and shared helpful links for me to explore. She works for AVO Magazine, a Japan-related entertainment website based in the Netherlands that focuses on Japanese music. They publish reports, reviews, informative articles, and interviews. Seraphinne specifically publishes articles and compiles weekly roundup articles of music videos by Japanese indie artists on that site.
Socials I even found her active official social media accounts, such as her Instagram account, @chinoriddim, her Twitter account, @chibi_chino, and her second band's Facebook in her Twitter bio. She is still making music and writing songs. The band she's in Harashin. Chino& Friends has their own website, Twitter, and Facebook accounts that are active, called Harashin.Chino& Friends and their Instagram account @harachino_official.
The artist's youtube channels are Harashin.Chino&Friends STAY HOME and harashin. chino & friends.
I fixed the links.

2024.04.29 00:17 OriginalDonaGraciete Bayer 🤝 Benfica members coalition proposal & Making us temporarily the biggest joint member-supported clubs in the world (> Bayern), for the rest of the season.

Dear Bayer supporters,
Hello, Benfica supporter here.
Here is a fun idea. The headline of this post might seem a little odd. So let me explain.

Today during a nice brunch with lots of food and alcohol, between me and some friends, and all of us being Portuguese, so of course we spent most of the time talking about football (if not all of it 😅. A lot is happening this weekend in our league), one of the topics was how our season is now over and how we should think about the next season.
We secured 2nd place, and we have no more competitions to play, other than finish the championship. But as things are now, we have no direct access to the Champions League next year, the only option being if Bayer wins this year’s Europa League, since you already qualified directly from your league, a spot opens to the highest coefficient club not directly qualified (Us).
And this is where you got in and some ideas and jokes started to evolve.
Your success is of our interest.

So, here’s an idea:
What if we joined support for the rest of the season?
In a friendly coalition way, of course, this has no way to be an official status.

We know that our (maybe not yet existing) relationship this season started low (at least for us) 😆.
A dramatic departure from Grimaldo, which turned into a tragedy for us this season, as we struggled so much with left-backs 😔, was possibly an amazing addition to you (I’m not aware how you rate his season, but I heard great things).
Plus we grew to be tired and even showed some desperation in getting rid of one of your countryman and ex-manager, Roger Schmidt, as we blame him and his well-known stubbornness for most of our underachievement this season (well …not really your fault).
But it can end well and even be the beginning (if never existed) of a beautiful friendship between us.

Here’s what each part would win:

You:
- Some extra synergy to you so you continue this amazing season strong and finish Invictus.
- The Europe League and the DFB-Pokal (not guaranteed unless you manage it 😅).

Us:
- Direct access to the Champions League.

Mutual:
- Become temporarily unofficially the biggest supported club in the world by club members.
- [Extra] Flex on Bayern.

I don’t know if you have any rivalry with Bayern. But with us has always been a “race” (more of a pride thing) to see who has the biggest membership.
For those who don’t know Benfica is currently the second club in the world with the most supporters, just behind Bayern, and when I say supporters, I don’t mean those pretend scales, like Instagram followers, Facebook likes, etc… I mean real members that give their devotion of time, energy and hard-earned money to the club. (If you do a quick Google search you can find many supports to this claim)
We were the biggest for a long while, even featuring in the Guinness Book for many editions. but I guess these days with the globalization of football, social media influence, the superior quality of German football, and the European and world success, Bayern had no issue outgrowing us.

Here is the Math:

Bayer ~50k:
According to this page on your website (link) you have almost 50k members. Don’t know when was that last updated but according to the membership order page on your website (link), there’s been a huge demand to be one. (No surprise, you’ve had a great year, and the future looks bright)

Benfica >300k:
Don’t know exactly at this time of the year how many we are, but according to our president in a General Assembly in September last year, we had 298.948 active members (here’s some news about it), and in February this year he said again that between February 2023 and February 2024, the club grew 25k members (don’t know how many overlap with the counting of September), but we must have grown at least past 300k.

Bayern 316k:
According to the latest update on the Bayern website, as of April 2, 2024, they have 318.372 registered fans (source). I don’t exactly understand if those are exact members or just part of their supporters clubs, but they say they have at least 316k (source)

So together with at least 350k members is enough to pass Bayern, making us the biggest in the world even if just temporarily.

How will the support be shown:
… Well idk, we can work on some ideas.

Notes:
I cannot speak officially for any of the clubs, or its members. This is just a proposal to both clubs and members to entertain ourselves for the rest of the season.
If it works, great, it will be fun, if not, well, that’s life.
I know that Benfica has a long and rich history of friendship with clubs all over the world, forged officially by the clubs or by its organized groups of supporters and there are many reasons and histories of how these relationships started. Don’t know about you.
Also, this membership numbers thing is always disputed as some clubs claim to have more than 300k members. In that A Bola link, it states River claims 336k, Boca 314k, but so does Benfica claim officially 344K when counting members that are currently excluded by having irregular membership (missing payments) we will make an official recount in 2025, but numbers I presented are also official and most times other clubs numbers are like our total members count.
And also, I know other clubs will also have a spike in unofficial support too, including Bayern which will play Real Madrid in the Champions League, so every Barcelona member will claim support for Bayern, but that is just for a game or 2, together we can last 10 (or something) 😂.

So, what do you say, keen on making this work?
You might not even need or want extra support, as things are working great for you, and you even seem to have a lucky hand on your shoulder with all those last-minute goals that keep you invincible.
It will also be our mandatory job to qualify for CL next season anyway, but not having to start the season earlier and play fewer games would be nice, and also maybe at the next official member count statement we pass Bayern finally (given that they might not also win the CL and member growth slows a bit), so there isn’t that huge need to flex that hard on them.
But it can be fun.

Extra future good thing for both of us:
Maybe unlikely, but involving you, us, and Bayern. We heard rumors (for what they are worth) that Bayern is considering hiring Schmidt. This could be great news for both of us.
Benfica members are mostly tired of him but we don’t think we can afford or have the balls to sack him.
This might work for you if happens and if Schmidt stays true to his reputation, he might have a few good first months or first season but then he will chock (you probably already know this feeling), leaving you big room, if you continue this project, to win one or more championships in the next couple of years.
Many of us are praying hard, even if you don’t need it, that this happens. We would even deliver him to Munich ourselves. 🤣

Cheers

2024.04.29 00:09 jennymumblz Worried of ruining my metabolism even more …

I feel really down right now and could use some people to talk to/vent safely. My doctor is really short with me and I feel like my friends and family don’t understand.
TLDR: my doc recommended phentermine, I’m desperate to lose weight and mentally struggling but scared with my history of yo yo dieting and weight loss/gain that phentermine will just be another thing to hurt my already damaged metabolism.
My doctor recommended I try phentermine but I’m worried I’ll ruin my metabolism or somehow end up worse off in the long run. However mentally I’m desperate to lose this weight, it’s making me depressed.
Currently I’m 32F, 5’3 185lbs. I feel so horrible about myself but I have a complicated history with my body and weight.
As a kid I was a little heavier but not unhealthy overweight. Although I was always larger than many of my friends. I think this was because I never was in sports and was chronically under nourished. I was always hungry.
Once I was on my own at 16/17 I could afford my own food and I reached my heaviest weight of 215lbs. About age 19 I realized I wasn’t healthy and learned all about nutrients, learned how to exercise etc etc. I got down to 150lbs over about a year to 2 year period. Then I worked at a gym for an extended period 5/6 years) where I was super active and had borderline eating disorder because I would deprive myself, lose weight to get to like 135lbs, then over eat, go back to 150lbs etc. it was a cycle of losing and gaining weight. I was always stressing about calorie counting, doing weird fasts, over exercising and completely obsessed with food.
Then about age 25 I went through a divorce. Without even trying I was down to 125lbs. I really enjoyed it, but looking back I did not look healthy. Over a year I gained 10lbs and was a healthier 135lbs. Then… I got pregnant. Through my pregnancy I gave up my diet mentality. I gained 60lbs. When I went to the hospital I was close to 200lbs, but I didn’t care because I was pregnant.
Once cleared to exercise following pregnancy I started counting calories and exercising again. I got down to about 165lbs. Stayed there for about 2 years. Then decided to go “hard”. Dieted more, starved myself with 1200 calorie a day diet, running, insanity workouts etc etc. I managed to get down to 155lbs.
But then I had a major rebound. I felt so sick and so hungry from the months of starvation dieting. Mentally I was sick and couldn’t stand myself and constantly just thinking of food. What can I eat what will I eat next. Just so obsessed and mentally tormented by food constantly.
So I decided to give up dieting again. Within 2 to 3 months my weight shot up to 180lbs. Now I’ve been 180-185lbs for about two years. Last summer I dieted and lost 15lbs but as soon as I stopped dieting I gained it all back. And I hate it. Every time I try to lose weight though by calorie counting or exercising more intense I all of a sudden get that out of control obsession with food. Or I feel so hungry and then don’t lose weight because I’m eating back calories I burn.
It’s just been such a horrible cycle of losing and gaining weight my whole life. I hate where I’m at right now but am so tired mentally of the battle with food/ my body. I tried the last three months to lose weight with exercise and dieting but ended up gaining two pounds (not muscle). So discouraging.
My doctor says I have estrogen dominance so I’m on some progesterone and she recommend a supplement for me. She said my weight is hormonal and recommended phentermine to help me out. But I’m worried because I feel like I already destroyed my metabolism through excessive dieting and yo yo weight loss/gain. Is phentermine going to make that even worse? Or will it possibly help me through and end my obsession with food and my body? I don’t want to be 125lbs again, but 150 would be nice and I’d feel more comfortable and healthy.
Thanks for reading if you made it this far. I’m at a low point and feel like I don’t know what to do.

2024.04.28 23:44 SpecialistExchange28 Wheelchair Ramps 101 - DIY down and dirty edition 2024

Wheelchair Ramps 101 - DIY down and dirty edition 2024
Thanks for deciding to read my post today. This is not the definitive or complete explanation of wheelchair ramp design. Before I start let's get the technical potentially legal stuff out of the way first.
Ramps that are indoors or in a fenced in area like a back yard (THE FENCED AREA MAY BE DIFFERENT IF IT IS ACCESSIBLE TO THE PUBLIC). Ramps not used by the public = Food delivery, mailperson, utility meter reader, Jahova's Witnesses, etc.
These Ramps do not need to Meer ADA requirements. But should still be functional and safe to use. You'd be surprised at what people do. But if it works, then it works.
Backyards that are fenced in and not accessible to the public MIGHT be excluded.
FOR ANY RAMP OR ACCESSIBLE FEATURE ADDED TO OITDOOR SPACES THAT THE PUBLIC CAN ACCESS WILL 100% NEED A TOWN OR CITY PERMIT. THIS IS WITHOUT EXCEPTION.
Here is where it gets real. If you decide to ignore this and say someone trips, slips pr otherwise gets injured by your accessibility fearure. YOU and only YOU are at fault. Even if it is 100% ADA compliant, the feature was not properly registered with the town or city so it can be noted when and where it is installed and on what property.
Next the town or city will fine you a set amount per day it was in place without a permit. For example a permit for my handcycle shed cost $100 that might seem unfair and costly. But if I had just built my shed without permit they could fine me $1,000 per day it was up from the time it was built.
Getting a permit and making things 100% or better than ADA complaint, yes it is easy to surpass what the ADA asks for. ADA is the bare minimum expected.
This doesn't mean someone trying to con you won't try and sue you. But, if you have things in order such as getting a permit. Making things at least ADA compliant will support your side in a legal issue.
Yup that is the borish stuff for the most part. Forget about it and life will likely get very annoying.
For those who are interested and want a live community to chillax in to talk about most anything really, listen to music and make requests for Fave songs or topics you would like to discuss.
I broadcast live typically in the cold months M-F from around when my pain allows me to get up varies 9am to after noon and I go until my sweetheart arrives home. About 5PM to 6PM I have been broadcasting live 16 years.
Quite literally I am just repeating here what I will talk about live also.
TikTok until the ban kicks in. Then it's back to Twitch. AbiliTV or AbiliTV Live. If you Google the name do not pay attention to the website I don't have one. And the owner of that sight well let's say I don't endorse him.
I am on YouTube, FB, IG,,Twitch, account still there but not used since it went to X (Twitter), Kick - although I don't like the vibe on Kick.
Of course I am here getting started here on Reddit in a more text based community. I am in the Wheelchair and Disabilities communities where I am learning about all sorts of amazing people.
OK, I always hate posting I am a live content creator. I hate it so much I have hardly any community live.
Ramps.
What makes a crappy, good, or excellent ramp?
For me it is the little details that really make the differences. I will use images to try and explain the bare basics.
1st image: Most people see this and think: My prayers have been answered.
No they have not. You will notice the direction the person is using the ramp. Manufacturers do this to play into your desperate need for a ramp solution. They want you imagining how easy there ramp is to use. So they stage images showing that. Much how homes are staged. To make it easier for people to fall victim to slick sales tricks.
What if the door were closed and rhe person was approaching the door? Look at the ramp. How does one say open s screen door or storm door that swings out? Most dwellings will have one.
Now imagine it's raining really hard and that nice metal surface isn't as grippy? And you have a bag or two of groceries on your lap. Now open the storm door and then before it closes as they are typically on a door closer of some design. As you fight the storm door, are annoyed by the driving rain, and fumbling for your keys.
Even on an ideally perfect day without snow or rain this ramp will work 100% against you. Also it isn't wide enough to allow you to move over out of the way ofcthe storm door. Meaning you need to back up and get the door perched against your wheelchair frame to now roll foward to open the entry door. Sadly using the wheelchair brakes just make things all that much more frustrating.
2nd Image: 3 ft ramp $219. This seems decent right? It isn't. You have to account for the pitch or slope.
If you have a threshold that is 10 inches higher than the surface you need to reach, this means you need not just a ten foot long ramp but a raised area that meets the threshold that the ramp attaches to closest to the surface you're trying to reach.
What happens if you decide to use a short ramp and have a steeper slope? The worst will be to flip backwards going up. Next worst you don't have the upper body strength to make it. The next will be you deciding never to use it except to exit with. It is a little less scary going down. Although you need really good hand strength and dexterity to maintain control at higher speeds.
ADDING INFO AS A SAFETY REMINDER: Most manual wheelchairs have what are called brakes. ⚠️ ⚠️ ⚠️ These are NOT brakes like those of a car, or bicycle. Injury or worse can happen when they are used as friction brakes. DANGER: You risk not only destroying your tire and wheelchair but also injuries from catastrophic failures of the tire and possibly the rims of the wheels.
These levers no matter if they are push or pull to lock or scissor styled brakes are only meant and made to hold you in place AFTER you use your hands to stop with. OR FEET for those able to do that.
The reason these are not brakes in the typical sense is because of how they work. They bite into the tire material and can blow out air filled tires by ripping through the rubber tire. On solid tires they can tear the tire causing it to fail and possibly fall off the rim. If the rim is left exposed and you are moving the metal or composite rim will slide on the surface.
The biggest excuses I hear for using these levers as brakes are: They are called brakes. YouTube wheelchair brake basics how to use and not use them. I don't want people ending more disabled than they already are.
My hands are to weak to stop me. I understand that. So my best suggestion is rubber coated work gooves. Leather gloves or some form of glove that you like to use. I personally don't like wearing gloves, but when I go on 16 mile strolls I wear a pair. They provide additional traction and that grip means less hand strength is needed to stop overall. It is not recommended to grab the tire for additional friction at any time while moving down hill.
If tire use us needed make sure you have a pair of heavy duty leather gloves on. Welding gloves short gauntlet works. Warning: This method destroys gloves rapidly. These is due to the sandpaper like friction the tire creates with its texture and tread design. Extreme heat can build up and burn your hands. So pay attention and release grip changing hand positions to reduce this.
Ramps have to be designed to work with the fact wheels like to roll. And steep ramps are what prompted my warning about brake use.
I am considering designing a brake system to work like a bicycle that could be added by most people. I will look into this concept at some point.
So a stubby short ramp might be low cost but isn't the answer it appears in most manufacturers images.
Lots of information that needs to be shared because so many people will fall into the thinking what they have is a good solution and it's harming them and the equipment they use.
Good news here: Most towns and cities do not charge or keep the charge very low for ramp and other disability access devices in public spaces.
What the permit does is show you the bare minimum of what is required to make your project ADA compliant. Also it resistors your ramp or lift with the town or city and at what property. This way should a nosy neighbor want to whine about your project looking horrible the town or city can reassure that negative rube that you are in full compliance with all the ordinances and ADA requirements. So they can mind their own beeswax.
Also the permit is a must if a property owner or landlord are to allow the access in the first place. This has to do with liability and property insurance. Speaking of that crap it would be wise to invest in renters insurance in the event someone claimsxto have been injured by your device. Do not depend only on the landlord or property owner's word that its covered. You could also ask your town or city how that works also to get a straight answer. If the landlord or property owner does claim you are covered always get that in writing.
3rd image shows the lack of what is called a staging area. This is exactly what a porch does. Notice the porch is flat and provides room to move out of the way of any storm door? This is a super important and all to easy to miss feature that makes a ramp go from frustrating to awesome.
I even made that mistake with my ramp I built for my garage. I did change it so it has a 6ft deep 4ft wide same as the ramp staging area that once I installed a screen door I use daily.
4th image: Now it gets colorful. Nothing attaches to the porch or the building in my design. This is to respect the property. And save you on extra costs to restore things later.
The support for the flat area of the porch:
Measure uo to the front top edge of the threshold. Say this is 6 inches or so... Using 4X4 cut to the same width of the porch. These are rated for outdoor ground contact.
Next using decking wood this should be equal to the top front edge of the threshold. In effect the timbers are the support they are orange and just on top of the porch. They go across to provide full support.
How to determine how many. For the porch shown in your image would likely use three. One right under the threshold, one in the middle, and one right along the front edge of the porch.
Decking would go left to right and for the parts with out full support use scrap pieces of 4X4 to position under those rows.
An alternative way to set the supports are: under the threshold is left to right full width of porch. Then instead of the others being left to right. Place one on the left going vertical or not left to right. One on the right side going perpendicular to fhe horizontal one. Then you will cut one 4 inches short for the center also placed parallel to the left and right. The front porch edge piece cut to fit the width between the left and right support.
That would allow you to place decking horizontally left to right with out worry of adding support for some of the deck strips.
The front edge of porch part I feel should be left to right mainly to insure there is no possible way for a ramp to flext or bow in this area. But you are welcome to Google methods on building something like this also.
The ramp for the porch will be the longest most likely based on the photos you shared. They are also referenced later in my post.
Only around the porch and the outside of the caster wheel guides on each side or the blue color in my image needs a railing, as well as down that first ramp.
The other ramps are little more than the plywood laying there. You wouldn't even really need the blue guides on the but they add additional stiffness from bouncing and bending.
Again Google is very good for finding examples of how you can design a capable railing. It doesn't need to be fancy, just meet the requirements the ADA sets. To avoid annoying splinters I strongly suggest using iron pipe or proper outdoor rated round railingbars.
Benefit of the metal pipe is it is very low cost. Con is in the sun it can get hot. To overcome thar railing grip tape can he used to cancle out the hot part and make it easier to grasp. Grip tape is not required.
Thankfully all of this is pretty easy to do if you have some some basic tools or have access to them like narrowing them. If you lack the skill or ability to do this. Trust me when I say buying lunch each day for the hard worker(s) often is payment enough. And Thank You is the perfect payment. Our reward is seeing you enjoying the work put into the project.
Last there is an green outline of a 2x4 on each side of the porch staging area. Put one on the far side as well and this should keep the staging area from shifting leftcand right. Surfaces endure a lot more force than we realize.
5th image I used my garage ramp before I corrected the flat staging area issue.
So this isn't how my indoor ramp now looks. It has no railings as it is not required and the flat area towards the garage side has a 4 inch tall wheel guard wall to keep me from accidentally rolling off front casters or rear wheels.
But, this is roughly how your front porch would look like. All designed to keep everyone safe who uses it.
By connecting the ramp to the flat staging areas makes it much harder for it to shift around. In the case of this if you owned the property you would use a contractors grade waterproof glue and 4 8 inch long lag bolts to secure the 4x4 or wood support right next to and under the threshold and bolt it and glue it to the location. Silicone sealant works also as it is mainly to keep insects from making the area home.
But since the property needs to be returned to original state, I find that making a saddle staging area works wonders. Sadlle in that it is,like a horse saddle. It isn't bolted to the horse but does use the shape of the horse as the stabilizer. And is easy to remove when needed.
Image 6: Sorry about the messy drawing. This is your photo.
The green is the railing around the porch and the first longest ramp.
The light kind of red horizontal strips are stair tread grip tape. Using wood screws shorter than the thickness of the plywood allows you to have a 2 method way to keep these strips in place. For how much they cost you will thank me. One screw near each corner and two one top one bottom in the center. This insures they are secure. The gue or adhesive isn't likely going to stick in every case.
You want full left to right coverage with 2 to 3 inch spacing between each horizontal strip. Yes you can just apply them centered and hope no one slips of they walk closer to the railing. Plus it makes insurance companies feel better also with more safety in mind.
In the event someone slips or falls when pictures are taken of l the scene it will look better for you to have provided more safety than not.
Also more screws can be used if desired. The only thing to make sure of is all screw heads are flat to the surface. The two method way also known as redundant measures to make sure things don't fail to the point of a catastrophe.
The ADA will likely have other suggestions different than I mention. Either will work, I find much of my ideas go beyond ADA requirements.
The ramps since they are so minor in slope may even be able to lay strips of 2x4 or even 1x1 that you screw to the underside of ramp. I almost think you could make what would look like a continuous ramp.
One step won't really need all 8 ft of plywood however keeping them full length means you could likely add smaller pieces where one ramp ends to meet with the highest point so you can connect them so this keeps them from shifting and moving as they will.
The little green marks along the sides of the blue for the length of the ramp represent side supports that are rounded into the ground and screwed to the sides.
As you use a ramp that is not secured it will move a little in the opposite direction of your direction of travel.
Also it will shift left or right when you first roll onto it. And since the ground shown is easy to return to its original condition once this is removed lowers cost at that time.
The blue dots represent horizontal srips placed where needed these are screwed in place as yes they will slide and move into new positions that don't support the ramp.
The goal is no bouncing, bending, flexing, warping ramps.
As long as all wood is rated for ground contact otherwise it will rot away pretty quickly otherwise.
The blue kind of bloody areas are flat sections filled in with plywood.
So once you enter this ramp ot remains a plywood surface until the porch area. Where it's decking.
7th image: An example of how your ramp could be designed. In this image since the ramp os longer and rises up higher I definitely would include ratings on each side. But - it may not require them so that is OK also. The redish area is a flat area at least 5 ft deep and 4ft wide. This would allow a person the chance to turn around also.
The circled spots denote support placement.
Now your steps for me would not need a ramp as I can strong arm my way up short steps or curbs like those. Tha porch would be the only area I would build if this were my place.
8th image: Immediately after moving in I built this and prior to finding the original screen door that the price owners removed and I reinstalled.
It was no fun using this ramp when I had to open the door. I typically had one of the kiddos now all grown up open it first for me.
The lack of a staging or flat area is a huge mistake.
This is ground contact outdoor rated plywood nearly 1 inch thick. Plywood keeps the construction simpler, and removal easier also later.
9th image: Shows the outdoor ramp. Notice the grip tape on this. This is the typical arrangement. I suggest side to side full width strips so able people can walk anyplace and be assured solid footing. The spacing I prefer also assures wheelchair tires have solid grip.
The steeper the ramp I say 3 inches between horizontal strips.
The shallower ramps for your lower or step ramps can be 4 to five inches between them. If they are wide strips works better.
Image 10: This is the ADA recommendation: 36 inches wide. Trust me especially for entry doors you want some space to move over to the side to get out of the way of a screen or storm door. And a place to put down groceries or a package or anything else so you can access the door.
48 inches just happens to be a pretty decent and better than ADA requirements that allows you more room for any purposes.
Image 11: Shows your porch. From what I see this should be pretty easy to cover with the staging area over the porch and ramp going down.
You want to measure from the front edge ofcthe threshold to the ground in front of the porch the walkway leading to it. This will give you a total height that needs to be accounted for.
Say it is a total of 10 inches tall. Your ramp will be 1 foot out per one inch in height. So 10 feet long. Now say you have the room and used 2 8 foot long plywood sheets end to end that is 16 ft. That means your slope will be less overall and easy to roll up. 10 ft will be usable but will be a little harder to roll up.
Funny thing is you use the same energy to roll up 10ft or 16ft. You just exert less energy over a longer distance that still equals the amount it takes to go up a 10 foot length.
Slope is something only you know what works for you. So if you need a little longer of a ramp if room allows it then that is fine.
Oh I forgot skip over the smaller step when making your measurements. That isn't where a ramp will end at to rest.
Image 12: The walkway. These little steps are easily rolled up by some wheelchair users. However of you can not. That is fine.
The over all length of these looks decently long enough. You in effect are just governing them as I hope I explained.
To keep the ramps from moving side spikes can be placed as mentioned 2 at the sides and top, two in the middle sides. And 2 and the bottom sides.
They get rounded into the ground next to each area of the Ramos they will be screwed to. You might even be able to lay a plywood sheet down and see if that is enough to raise you up enough. That the plywood could just lay on the walkway.
Now most likely that option will not fully work. Offered as an alternative.
The very end where ramp ends or starts at the lowest point you can get an aluminum door threshold commercial grade one. It means a little bump up onto the ramp and or down it.
I will photograph the one I have as it works like a charm. Also the rest of my garage ramp.
The deck to ramp can be connected using lag bolts from underneath into the 2 4x4 support. Using 6 or preferred 7 or 8 inch long lag bolts 3 of them to secure the ramp to the staging deck area.
Trust me when I say this, this is a mere drop in the bucket of information on how to design a ramp system.
Last little note:
Always get a permit prior making anything. The permit should cost nothing or very little since it is an accessibility ♿️ need. The information the permit comes with will also be of huge help in DIY or other options.
Sadly there is no way to construct something like this for no cost. However, church groups, friends, local elected officials, and others can be great resources. From fundraising, to helping you locate a foundation or charity to help cover some or all of it.
Do not feel bad for asking for help like this and when needed. Being a renter doesn't mean you should not have accessibility.
Like I mentioned if I was your fellow disabled neighbor I would help construct this.
Tools needed:
Tape measure x 2 I always end up needing 2 of them at times.
4 ft level.
Carpenter square.
Torpedo level. This is a 1 foot long smaller level like the larger 4ft one.
Carpenter or construction style pencil ✏️ they are flat and don't roll away when sat down.
Wood/deck screws 3 or 4in long.
Cordless drill and 2 batteries allows rotation of them when charging. They typically will last 2 or hours each. So when one runs out charge it while using the other.
Leather work gloves.
Socket wrench set for lag bolts.
Screw driver set. Mainly a number 2 Phillips and flathead. These come in handy.
Circular saw - they come corded or cordless either works.
Hand saw for those cuts to awkward for a power tool.
Drill bits for pre drilling holes.
Liquid nails to glue some things together.
Short wood screws not longer than the plywood is thick. For the grip tape strips.
Safety glasses get a few pair.
Hearing protection. Cutting wood can be really loud. Same with drilling it and all.
Things that could help: Something stable to place wood to be cut on.
Saw horses or milk crates the sturdy plastic ones. If they get cut into no big deal.
They cut be cut safely on the ground without risk of damaging tools or injuring you.
Since we are all in the same boat 🚢 in many respects, I find it sp satisfying helping people by helping them learn how they can also help themselves. It's how I was raised. Knowing you have some information and know where to locate more is my payment.
Back to me talking about my live content.
A lot like this post and my others, it is insanely boring stuff. 😴
However, I ask what other content creator is willing to discuss and cover this type of stuff?
Really go look on Twitch live, YouTube live, TikTok Live, Kick,Instagram Live or any other site allowing live content.
How many do you find that can answer questions or get you aimed in the correct direction for the information you need?
16 years now this is what I do for free. I will not and do not monetize my content. I removed myself from Twitch affiliate orogram, I have asked TikTok to allow offboarding and the option to not monetize.
I prefer to lead by example.
Please consider getting to know this strange goofball of a weirdo on my social media channels. It's not a big community but any means and is well sp unique that most people fail to realize all the nerdy disability related bits of knowledge I have to share. Plus I love light sabers and anime to make me extra geeky.
AbiliTV and AbiliTV Live on the main social media platforms.
On TikTok my actual username is AbiliTV and my screen or showing name is DJ Wheelchairbeats.
If you visit tell me your from Reddit and I will in a very socially awkward way greet you. Well I hope with practice this gets less awkward in time. :)
I am not seeking a relationship. Or any side quests. I am at level 54 in my life and to old to give a fart for drama. Making cool new friends, now that's what it's about.
Time to get some photos of my garage ramp.

2024.04.28 22:51 Georgxna Does anybody else feel like food is boring or a chore to eat?

I know the title sounds a little misleading but let me explain. I do love food and I don’t have an eating disorder (that I know of), I also really enjoy cooking. However, I only really ever enjoy food if it’s from a restaurant or pre prepared etc.. I’m also much more of a snacker, small and little portions but often. Even though I love to cook by the time I’m finished I don’t even want the food, it feels like a constant chore to actually eat eat. I think if we created an invention that allowed us to take a pill and get nutrients from it without ever having to eat again I wouldn’t mind at all, not for 80% of the time anyway (excluding my major sweet tooth).
I can’t tell if I’m just bored, but I’m so explorative with my meals I don’t even know what I would make? I know a ton of people who base their life around their meals and I’m really envious, I’d love to be excited about food, because again it is delicious or rather it seems delicious to think about. Maybe I need to start getting pre prepared meals like hello fresh to spice up my life and make me more excited about food? But that’s really expensive.

2024.04.28 22:28 Snuzzle3 Bartenders lied to me and I'm still bitter

I've been waiting to share this one with you Charlotte. I (18f) work in the wedding industry at a place with 11 different venues as a coordinator (basically I have to stay the whole time to help with AV, trashes, coordinating other vendors, and just babysit the wedding). I was working a wedding last summer that honestly I should've called security and had them shut it down. We have a policy that if you have alcohol at your event, you must have a bartender there and all alcohol must be served by said bartender, and all bartenders must be from our preferred list of bartenders. Alcohol cannot be out before the bartenders get there, we have to lock it in a giant lock box and the fridge and no extra alcohol is to be brought in the building when the bartenders get there (this is important).
This wedding has about 400 people. Music was super loud, which I expected. I was with a coworker and we had to pull trashes every ten to twenty minutes. The bartenders got there and they started handing out alcohol before they were properly set up at the bar. I didn't do much about it since I was between doing trash rounds and adjusting the brightness of the lights to fit what the very lovely bride was asking for. I didn't think much about the bartenders handing stuff out initially since they were handing out beer cans and I just took out their trash whenever it got full.
Dinner service rolls around and catering has offered my coworker and I food which we gladly accept after the guests have had first and second helpings. We disappeared into the back closet for a moment to eat. When we came out, practically everyone as far as the eye could see had their own bottle of Crown Royal. The bartenders insisted that they had been handing out the full bottles of Crown Royal, despite the only being two bottles of it behind the bar earlier and the fact that I could see a wedding guest outside that wasn't associated with the bartenders who was handing out the bottles. Later in the evening there was even more alcohol showing up that the bartenders were still insisting they were handing out even though I'm not dumb and can see guests bringing in more alcohol from their cars and handing it out without it ever going to the bartenders.
The end of the night came and the bartenders were cleaning up and another guest brought in more beer and was passing cans around. When I tried telling the bartenders they both brushed me off. When everyone left there was a sea of trash and empty alcohol bottles everywhere both inside and outside, I cleaned up most of it on my own which took hours. Not to mention that someone stole my only pocket knife which I had on me because I had to open boxes when helping the bridal party decorate the venue. At the end of the event, I had to put in a report to my boss on how the wedding went. I told her to take the bartender company off our list since they kept lying.
I had a second event with this same bartending company a few weeks later. There wasn't near as many people, nor near as much alcohol but I caught guests sneaking in extra alcohol and the bartenders brushed me off like before. That night's review had me double down on my insistence they be taken off the list.
Now let's jump forward to this past March. My former boss retired and my new boss had taken over, me boss worked closely with the old one and nothing has changed alcohol policy wise. I hadn't heard of anyone working with that bartending company in a while, so I thought they were off the list. At the end of March my department did their annual mandatory training. At this training we're given an updated list of the venue prices and preferred vendors such as catering and bartenders. I was furious to see that they were still on the list and went and talked to my new boss and explained to her what happened. Long story short, they still aren't off the list as of this post, I did check the company website before posting.

I've worked up from the 5k distance, to getting comfortable doing 10ks, which inevitably led to my first half marathon, last may. Every race though, and every training block, there was always the thought of the marathon in the back of my head, that every race and practice was to get good at X distance, so that I can eventually qualify for Boston. Years ago in my dorm-room in college I remember learning about the significance of Boston, of qualifying, what the standard was, and what pace was needed. I thought at the time I could just run that pace everyday until I could eventually reach the marathon distance, very wrong. I gave up running a month or so after that, didn't run for 4 years roughly. Flash-forward to this morning, race day.... I'm an absolute bundle of nerves, I'm aware of how big of an undertaking I'm trying to do, with all the pressure of trying to do this on my first attempt. My goal was to hit around 2:51:XX, which meant around a 6:32 pace. This is what I'd practiced for months. I knew the day was going to be hot and humid and I could already feel it by the time I got to the race. Race
The plan was to settle at 6:40-6:45 for the first few miles and settle my way down once I got comfortable. As the splits show, this comfort happened a little too fast. I felt good going out, with TONS of runners around me. I was having some difficulty finding my pace at times, feeling myself ebb and flow between the different groups, feeling people split off, come up, drop back. Eventually by 5 miles in a pack had formed, with me at the back, trying to keep a low 6:40, trying to gauge my body and go off my Garmin but every-time creeping up a little fast. I'd decided to hang with a few different runners, exchanging pleasantries, asking about the marathon experience. By this point I was feeling good, I wasn't going at a slow pace I knew that, and I kept waiting for the hammer to drop at any second, probably a big mentality mistake. Pretty abruptly around 7 or 8 miles in I remember looking behind me and seeing no-one, not on any straightaways, not coming around any corners, not straggling a quarter of a mile away. I was internally pretty jarred by this, knowing that I'd have to stick with this pace group if I wanted to have people around me, especially so early into the race. I kept it nice and comfy until around 10 miles, when I mentally decided to drop the whole 6:40 schtick and drop it down to 6:30s consciously this time. I crept up the race a bit and latched onto this guy I'd met earlier, who was consistently hitting 6:35s. I decided to stick with him. After mile 10 the next three miles flew by, half marathon came and went, was still feeling good by this point. Some looong straightaways (I think) was maybe the highlight of the race? It felt like 3 straight miles of just flat flat flat, felt amazing. Fast forward to Mr. Struggle time. I was aware it was going to get tough at 18 miles, and it did, not that bad, but I was more aware of the effort I was putting in at this point. I should've been happier when 20 miles hit but at this point in the race it had started flooding, the rain by this point was somewhat torrential and very windy. I dropped an earbud, my bib started ripping, my shoes were water-logged (not that others weren't). This is when it started to SUCK. I don't know exactly when I had this thought but something I need to work on is mentality, because around the 20 mile marker I started thinking to myself how it wouldn't be that bad now if I'd stopped, that 20 miles was enough, that if I just cantered the next 6.2 I'd be happy with that, that I can try sub 3 another time. There was never a snap back to reality moment, but I kept pushing, maybe I could've pushed more? but I was pushing nonetheless. Also to note, I've been having terrible stomach problems for the past 6 months that causes bloating whenever I take in certain foods, I discovered last week...one of these is sugar. What was I taking in every half hour? SUGAR. My stomach didn't feel that bad, until 20 miles. I kept having to burp and if you've ever run with carbonation in your system it feels like air is stuck at the bottom of your throat and won't come out. At this point I started gagging accidentally, not helpful and not fun. It was also at this point I think I made the biggest mistake, I'd done the math of how fast I'd have to run to still go sub 3, and what I thought was sub 2:55, and realized I could (actually not) stick to that pace and try to finish the race that way. Maybe I shouldn't have done this maybe it didn't matter, because finishing at that pace still felt absurdly difficult, I had nothing at all left in my tank, which is very different than how I normally finish races. Race eventually finished, tiredness ensuing. Thoughts Mixed feelings. I wanted 2:51, I wanted to get so far under the 3 hours that going to Boston was way more likely. I also wanted to finish stronger than I finished, but I made a mistake somewhere in the race and wasn't able to find it mentally to push even further. I'm still incredibly happy, happy to be done, happy to stop having to go to bed at 9 pm to prep for a 5 am wakeup time, happy to be done with this training block and happy to finish sub 3 in my first marathon. There's more I wanted from today but it didn't work out that way. Made with a new race report generator created by herumph.

2024.04.28 21:08 Typical_End3781 Newly Diagnosed

Hello,
After 5 major surgeries in one year. I am suffering with gastroparesis. I’m 27 years old and I am losing a steady 5-10 pounds a week. I’m constantly in and out of the ER for IV fluids and iv zofran and pain medication. I cannot pass gas, have a BM, and I’m so malnourished I can barely get out of bed. Safe foods? Forget about it. Everything comes back up. I don’t WANT a tube or home IV fluids but I can’t see myself surviving much longer without. My hair is falling out. My teeth are becoming brittle. I can no longer work as a hair stylist/influencer. My life has been flipped upside down. I have a 7 year old little boy who is counting on me daily. He deserves none of this. I guess my question is.. how do I go about getting at home care. I understand the infection rate risks, but have zero water or nutrients is slowly taking my life. I look like a skeleton. Sorry for the rant. I’m just a girlie who is in dire need of help. I feel for all of you on such a deep level 🥹

2024.04.28 20:45 marcus9771 Roots of Titanium & Perfect Society II

THIS IS ROTHSCHILDS FUCKERY! ITS THEM. FUCKING THEM!
Earlier I was wondering what Benito Mussolini and others relationship to this was when by judging the 1947 periodic table - Titanium is mostly German.
It’s in the same box as Germanium. So I doubt Benito Mussolini was the main person behind it. No, Hitler was.
What does Titanium and Germanium have in common? ROTHSCHILDS.
What do Nazis and Zionists have in common? ROTHSCHILDS.
Even names like Frank. ROTHSCHILDS.
Rothschilds are in fact originating from one guy who sent 5 sons to build banking dynasties everywhere. But the original family is from Frankfurt, Germany.
Their emblem is also from 1822.
THEY WERE the leader of the Zionist movement as long back as 1917 when Balfour Declaration was signed. at the time, Lord Walter Lionel Rothschild was the richest man on the planet.
ALL the families would be repping Titanium and Germanium because that’s their roots. Whether in Italy or the UK.
No wonder the Nazi movement was still spearheaded by Germany.
The Nazi movement would fucking collapse in itself when people realise they fought for dumb stupid rich bankers to be able to own everything instead of the people.
Look at what they do in every country. They get some right winger to basically make every country right wing, anti immigration etc
Just by being on the right, you are still fighting for their cause.
Capitalism is HILARIOUS because by default, 70% of us should be communists. WHAT FUCKING AMERICAN DREAM DO WE HAVE ACCESS TO?
Rothschilds want to make sure nobody can ever take away their assets.
They weaponise things like antisemitism, right wing beliefs, whatever the fuck works.
No fucking shit communism is scary to these banking families.
What the fuck does a fast food worker benefit from capitalism to vote right?
They have truly brainwashed and deluded everybody.
Rich people should bend over backwards satisfying us to make sure we are happy, and continue to vote right!
Instead, they take away welfare, decrease taxes on the rich, give us inflation, make us poorer than ever, even education fucking paralyses us with student loans. WHAT THE FUCK.
The 1% has somehow tricked the whole world into accepting this HORSE SHIT.
The rich deluded us into thinking THEY should decide what our armies fight for. They create armies, sell us propaganda on how amazing it is to serve your country not knowing you’re a fucking pawn! And most wars were fought for reasons people kept secret!
It’s all fucking propaganda by the rich!
If capitalism should continue, they BETTER meet half way and start making education basically free for all (like Australia at least with our HELP loans that mean you never have to pay it back if your tax threshold ain’t high enough), health care for all etc
The LEAST you people could demand for is the socialism already working in other countries like UK and Australia. That should be your fucking right. Don’t let rich people tell you otherwise and try take away things like healthcare.
It is these things that increase social mobility - education, healthcare, and welfare. You see it in me. That’s how I was perhaps able to surpass my father. That is the BARE MINIMUM your country should provide for you if it wants to keep capitalism and sell you the American Dream.
And they have you BRAINWASHED. So many voters for the right are the very same people impacted the most! Uneducated etc
Stop letting politics revolve around petty bullshit and make it about economics again!
Tell all the Bush era conservatives, the neocons who many have evolved into MAGA’s to go fuck themselves because they aren’t making ANYTHING great except their morally bankrupt friends.
DEMOCRATS is how you make America great again, especially if you stop getting Republicans standing in the way of combatting wealth inequality.
These fucking assholes.. literally, they don’t even fucking try make it worth it for poor people to vote right. It’s revolving around just making policies that benefit THEM, not all of your country.
If you want safer communities, even senses of community, to lower crime and things like substance abuse, - your main problem is WEALTH INEQUALITY.
One of the problems in the way is religion. Start teaching the people that life is mostly deterministic then watch how fast Right wingers get fucked up the ass.
They want communism but only for themselves!
To me, THEY are the communists. We are just the god damn slaves. Apparently they don’t need chains to enslave us anymore.
There SHOULD be a wealth cap. Take for example a single man with no family has for example $100 billion. Wouldn’t you think he has more than enough?
The problem is you have so many of these people who have taken wealth out of circulation.
You know how economies combat recessions? They introduce surpluses and give money to people to make them spend, so people stop hoarding their money.
Your economy NEEDS money to keep circulating.
You shoot yourselves in the fucking foot whenever a company like Google enters a new market, is able to do everything at astronomically low prices, and basically like.. look at YouTube. That is the problem of capitalism.
IF you had an American dream, the category of video websites wouldn’t just get bought out by a large corporation.
When I used that NY Times example where no matter if you can put in 10000x the work, NY Times owns the newspaper monopoly in NY for fucking EVER
Now imagine the video content website.
NOT ONLY did Google create a king of search engines. They were able to go become the king of video websites.
Now even if you were to put in 100000x the work that the creators of YouTube did, you will NEVER replace them.
These monopolies get bigger & bigger.
If you want to bring back the American Dream, you HAVE to vote Democrat.
Just look at me! It is only because my amazing country has covered my healthcare, my education, my welfare, that I was even able to take my shot at the American Dream! In America, my hard work NEVER mattered. In America, I was dead the day I was born and apparently my destiny was to live the life of a slave for rich people.
The American election should have been an election between TWO leftist parties, where you debate on things such as puberty blockers.
It should NEVER be an election between Democrats and Republicans.
See, in Australia where I am even though it became 100x harder from when my dad got here, I BARELY was able to experience the American Dream. I have faith I’ll get there one day.
But if I never even had my periodic table chemistry to get me watched by the whole world, what fucking chance did I ever have? I was supposed to go work fruit and veg with my family or become some shitty accountant.
9.9 times out of 10, I was going to have a mediocre life. And that had NOTHING to do with the amount of hard work I’ve put in or any talent. I grinded my fucking ass off for the last few years, I don’t remember the last time I saw a friend or been to a party!
Some people like me make it in America. That’s NOT an American dream.
Even if I put in half the work to get here, I was STILL excelling compared to my age group but doomed to a life of mediocrity. Going against the million to one odds and winning is not a dream, it’s more like having won a lotto ticket jackpot. And we brainwash everybody by making it sound like it’s anything easier than a lottery ticket jackpot.
Anyway. Tell rich people to kiss your asses.
I’m not saying this shit for me - anybody can see that I’ll be able to make a living from just speaking about my experiences and I’d have a lifetime of comfort eventually.
This actually helps the vast majority of the world, more than me.
Remember, capitalism is zero sum. So as long as we are capitalistic, I AM losing money by tryna start this movement.
Still, I want everybody to have the same opportunities I had. I woulda been dead if I had to cover my medical expenses.
If the whole legal basis for having to pay taxes is that “you live in our country now” blablabla then tell them to spend your taxes on EVERYBODY’s healthcare.
It’s a fucking no brainer too. These rich people, WHO THE FUCK do you think is going to become sick along with the poor? Eventually, you. You might delay your arthritis by two decades but coming up for cures for the poor means you cure the rich.
If the rich cure the poor from ailments, you suddenly have poor people who can work on YOUR cures.
By making the American dream available to all, enabling as many people to becoming doctors, you are helping yourselves too.
The way you guys do everything is so selfish and backwards.
Give me a damn country and watch how we excel everything. No crime, no robberies, no murders, a community dedicating to life hacking, belief in empathy as the key to a perfect society, nobody left behind,
Seriously give me a few million people and watch how quickly we jump to the top of all the industries.
It’ll be socialism + capitalism that isn’t zero sum, and equitable as possible. Nobody allowed to hoard wealth if you want to live among us or do business among us. To be able to live in this perfect society, you have to have empathy and an interest in seeing everybody excel no matter their skin or religion.
In fact make my few million people mixed from different ethnicities so I prove to you all your identity politics is FUCKING STUPID and personality disorders are the category of life.
Bring me Israeli’s and Jews and lemme show you how they’ll rather live in my country than Israel.
It would have minimum government interference, we’d settle disputes like tribes did. Tribal law. Everybody would be an autodidact and a critical thinker
In fact our constitution would be: CRITICAL THINKING. LOGIC TO SOLVE ALL DISPUTES WITH EMPHASIS ON EMPATHY. Trauma-informed.
THAT is all we need. “Logic” implies like court sentences follow precedents.

2024.04.28 20:30 Trandromeda Trip Report: Golden Route during sakura season and a wedding in Tokyo

Recently got back from an incredible 19 days in Japan. I’m really feeling the post-Japan blues now, but writing about the trip and sharing what I learned feels like a nice way to honour the memories I made.
I (35M) travelled to Japan with my partner (41M) from Canada. We were there from March 26 to April 13 - these dates were “chosen” for us because we were attending a wedding in Tokyo. We got to wear hakamas, walk in the procession at Meiji Jingu, and observe a Shinto wedding ceremony first-hand.
We did the Golden Route + Kanazawa, however, many travelers have already written about this route so I’ll try to offer new stories to interested readers instead.

About us and high-level trip summary:

Detailed report:

Before the flight

There were a few things we did before the trip began to help us out:

Landing in Japan

A note about the trains and ticketing system

I loved taking the shinkansen, they were so comfortable and predictable. The ticketing system, however... that’s a different story entirely. I think everyone just has to go through it like a rite of passage. I also couldn’t get SmartEx to work, which would’ve saved us a lot of hassle.
Regarding the JR West pass, I learned that you can’t make online seat reservations with it after you pick up the physical pass. You must use a specific machine or visit a ticket desk. To use the machines, find the ones with the green head boards and then select the option that mentions using a ‘discount ticket’ or something like that. Insert your pass and choose the destination and train you want to take. You’ll then get your pass back along with the printed tickets. Fortunately, there’s usually an attendant there to help you out.
I will miss having bento on the train while watching the scenery pass by (and listening to Fujii Kaze, haha).

March 26 - 28: A gentle introduction to Japan.

Places: Asakusa, Akihabara, Ueno, Ginza, and Chiyoda
Hotel: Route-Inn Grand Tokyo Asakusabashi
We chose this area because it was budget-friendly and gave us easy access to all the places we planned on visiting. A lot of people recommend staying in Asakusa, but we found Asakusabashi to be even quieter and cheaper.
Highlights:
Notes:

March 29 - April 3: Unforgettable memories made over a weekend.

Places: Shinjuku, Shibuya, teamLab, Kawaguchiko, and the wedding
Hotel: Yuen Shinjuku
Atmospheric hotel. Situated on a quiet street in Shinjuku while remaining within walking distance to all the fun places. Onsen on the top floor with amazing city views.
Highlight: The wedding
Highlight: Nichome
Other highlights:
Notes:

April 3 - 7: Embracing the calm after Tokyo.

Places: Hakone, Osaka, Himeji
Hotels: Mount View Hakone and Onyado Nono Osaka Yodoyabashi
The hotel in Hakone was itself the highlight. This one was a bit higher up in the mountains, but still easily accessible by bus. Top-notch hospitality and amenities. Our Osaka hotel was also comfortable and had an onsen and was located in a convenient area - not in the thick of things, but close to the important metro lines.
Highlights:
Notes:

April 7 - 10: Sakura, temples, and museums.

Places: Nara, Kyoto, Hiroshima
Hotel: TUNESTAY Kyoto
A modern hotel that also feels like a hostel with its communal amenities and young vibe. Rest assured, the rooms are private and include your own bathroom. Minutes away from Kyoto Station and situated on the same street as the sightseeing buses.
Highlights:
Notes:

April 10 - 12: Winding down and enjoying small city life.

Places: Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go
Hotel: Hotel Kanazawa Zoushi
Our second favourite hotel of the trip. We had the warmest reception here, with complimentary tea and dango provided at check-in. The room was very comfortable, while the bathrooms were surprisingly spacious.
Highlights:
Notes:

April 12 - 13: One more outing in Tokyo’s most desirable neighbourhood.

Places: Kichijoji, Haneda
Hotel: Tokyu REI Kichijoji
Standard hotel with few frills, but great price and location. We chose it because it was a last minute decision to switch from Akihabara to Kichijoji for our last night.
Highlights:
Now that some time has passed since departing Japan, the emotions that swept over me in that country have left a deep impression. Like a reminder of what I’m chasing after in this life, Japan excited me, fulfilled me, and left me wanting more. I know that being Japanese in Japan is an entirely different experience, but I still yearn to experience even just a sliver of that life.
Thanks for reading and I hope you got something out of this trip report. If you’re interested in seeing some of the photos I took on this trip, I’ve shared them on my Instagram account, which is the same handle as my Reddit username.

Background
The derby "MiniMarathon" is what the Louisville locals call the half-marathon which is part of the Kentucky Derby Festival. This race is one of many events leading up to the "most exciting two minutes in sports."
I get free entries through work and ran the half-marathon the past few years, including finishing the 2023 race in 2:07:45. I barely finished the 2023 race and reminded myself that at 33 years old I could be in the best running shape of my life. I made a goal to break the half-marathon PR I set back when at 20 years old (1:39) and joined a local running club.

Training

My local running store hosts a club that trains for Fall and Spring half-marathons. I have a 2 year old daughter and am limited with my time, so I committed to a plan of 20-30 mpw consisting of 1 long run, 1 speed/hill workout, and 1 tempo run.
Oct 2023 I finished the Urban Bourbon half-marathon in 1:43 but bonked around mile 9. It was encouraging to see some improvement but did not hit my goal time. A few friends from the running group wanted to continue running through the winter so that's what we did. There were a few days in the single digits but having a group kept me accountable and running during the 2degF weather.
I kept at the 20-30mpw pace and sprinkled some short races (5k's, 10k) as well as swimming/weight lifting for cross training. I did not know what pace to shoot for, so I signed up for a 15k in March 2024 and the Knoxville Half Marathon in early April 2024 to test out my pacing.
I was encouraged when I finished the 15k at a 7:06/mile pace and the half at 7:18/mile pace. I was not expecting to do so well during the Knoxville half due to their hills, but I ended up hitting a NEW PR!!! (1:35:48) and building confidence that I could push for a 7:10/sub-1:34 pace. Following this race, I began to taper and replace running workouts with cross-training.

Pre-race

The race is a 7am start which I was hoping would mean cool temperatures. My ideal race temperature is 40-45degF. All week the weather was perfect but I saw in the forecast a warm front hitting the night before the race. Leading up to raceday all I could do was do my best to hydrate and hope for low humidity.
I woke up at 4:45am and began my pre-race ritual of eating a bagel with melted butter and drinking a pot of coffee. I have gotten into a schedule where my body will empty out ~1 hour after my coffee which was the case. I hit the bathroom before I left my house and decided not to drink any more water since the last few races I started the races with full bladders. In hindsight, I should have held off on some of the coffee rather than the water.
This is a large race with difficult parking. I found myself with only 45 minutes to go navigating traffic and looking for a parking spot. I parked, hit a porta potty for poop #2, and made it to my corral with only a few minutes to spare. The half-marathon is run in tandem with the full marathon and I eyed the 3:10 pacers at the start. It was already 70 degrees at the start so I began reevaluating my pace due to the temperature.

Race

I decided to start off with the 3:10 pacers for the first two miles to keep myself from going out too fast. I assumed they were going to bank a little time in the early miles of the race which was the case. Around mile 3 I started feeling the 70+ temperatures and my heart rate was higher than normal. I knew that the heat was going to be an issue this race and considered slowing down. I have been used to running in the cool mornings all spring and was hoping the rising summer temperatures would hold off. I ultimately said "screw it" and decided that since I didn't have another race anytime soon I might as well shoot for my goal. Every water station I grabbed a cup, took a small sip, and dumped the rest on my head.
Mile 7 I began to feel the heat but my legs and breathing felt good. I was staying ~10 meters ahead of the 3:10 pacers and was seeing how long I could hold on. I was ahead of them when the marathon course turns away from the half around mile 9 and allowed myself to slow down to a 7:30 pace.
Miles 9-12 I knew I needed to hold on for a chance at a PR. I had banked some good miles and was having trouble doing the math in my head. My wife and daughter were at mile 11 so they were the first milestone. I stopped briefly to see my 2 year old and ask how stinky I was. She said I was very stinky.
My heart rate was maxed out but my legs felt fine. Miles 11 and 12 I knew some folks at a the water station so I tried to hide how I was feeling on the inside as I ran by. I ran both these miles at 7:30 pace and could feel a PR slipping away.
Mile 13 I turned off my music and tried to optimize how fast I could run. I find that early in the race it is better to run with a "distraction," but later in a race I should run by "feel." I was getting passed by a couple people who clearly had juice left in the tank, but I was passing a lot more runners getting hit by the heat. I was surprised how many people were walking after running a faster pace than me for the first 12 miles.
As I turned down the last stretch, I told myself I can just cruise into the finish as long as I don't slow down. Every race I debate whether I should kick it into the finish. Ultimately, I would hate to lose out on a goal by a couple seconds (more on that later) or lose out on an age group award. I finish the last quarter mile at 5:00/mile pace and sprint past a handful of people at the finish. I cross the finish line at 1:35:53.

Post-race

5 seconds. I miss out on a new PR by 5 seconds. I'm not disappointed. At 33, I am faster than I was at 20 years old. I beat my 2023 time by over 30 minutes. I've had a great series of races this spring and in arguably the best running shape I've ever been.
I hurry past the post-race food and get in my car and head home. I think about some of the things I would have done differently. Perhaps I tapered too soon. I think my pacing strategy was ok but I could have taken the first half of the race a little slower.
Overall, I am proud of how much I improved from a year ago. It was a lot of work to stay consistent with a toddler at home and balancing a career. I plan to continue running 20 miles/week until I nail down a new target race. My marathon PR was also set at 20 years old so I am tempted to try for a new marathon PR.
