2024.04.29 00:43 Piquedtiques Help identifying bookcase maker and decade of origin
 | I picked this bookcase up from an older gentleman this weekend near Charlotte, NC. He is originally from Boston and seems to have owned it for many years so it may have originated up north somewhere. I have found similar pieces on Etsy and other auction sites, but nothing close enough that I feel confident attributing a specific maker or time period to it. I do believe it could be on the cusp of vintage/antique. I have thumbed through some Larkin Co catalogs online, but have found no listing to match. Though I do believe it could be a Larkin. The lock mechanism says it was patented September 25, 1906 by Francis Keil and Son. The nail heads are flat, round, and not uniform. The feet are two different styles. I thought one set may have been a replacement but that does not appear to be the case. There is a faded, partial label on the back that I cannot make out. I had to flip the images so it’s possible it could have been transferred there. Does anyone know if the style of the carved notches in the top corners has a name? I just realized one of the shelves is lying on top, the top of the cabinet is all straight and smooth. There is a number 15 branded on one of the shelves that I did not get a photo of. The material world around him seemed to vibrate and thrum with a subtler energy, as though he could perceive the cosmic consciousness that wove and danced to manifest all appearance of form. He was unshakably aware of his true nature as a soul sourced from that infinite field, merely wearing this human disguise for a brief experiential journey. Gov. Ron DeSantis has been at war with Satanism and the Satanic Temple since December 2023.
In December 2023, the Satanic Temple erected a Baphomet display in the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines for the Christmas season. However, on 14 December 2023, the display was destroyed by Michael Cassidy, a 35-year-old candidate for the Mississippi House of Representatives and a Christian conservative from Lauderdale, Mississippi.
Cassidy, who read about the display on social media, went to the Capitol to destroy it, stating his reasoning for vandalizing the statue: "I grew up in a country that was founded on Christian principles, and in America, that generally promoted good ethics and public displays of virtue. The evil display and the lack of action surprised and offended me as a Christian. People need to stand up for what is right. Satan is evil, and glorifying evil is not an American value."
Cassidy also stated that the Satanic Temple "needed Jesus", and sought to evangelize adherents.
In a further interview with conservative news outlet The Sentinel, Cassidy said, "The world may tell Christians to submissively accept the legitimization of Satan, but none of the Founding Fathers would have considered government sanction of Satanic altars inside Capitol buildings as protected by the First Amendment. Anti-Christian values have steadily been mainstreamed more and more in recent decades, and Christians have largely acted like the proverbial frog in the boiling pot of water. I saw this blasphemous statue, and was outraged. My conscience is held captive to the word of God, not to bureaucratic decree, and so I acted."
Cassidy also cited 1 John 3:8 from the Gospel of John from New Testament of the Bible as his motivating for destroying the Baphomet display: "The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the Devil. Scripture exhorts us to think and act like Jesus Christ."
Despite Cassidy's claims, the Satanic Temple states on its website, "We do not believe in the existence of Satan or the supernatural. The Satanic Temple believes that religion can, and should, be divorced from superstition. As such, we do not promote a belief in a personal Satan. To embrace the name 'Satan' is to embrace rational inquiry removed from supernaturalism and archaic tradition-based superstitions. Satanists should actively work to hone critical thinking, and exercise reasonable agnosticism in all things. Our beliefs must be malleable to the best current scientific understandings of the material world, never the reverse."
The Satanic Temple also denied Cassidy's accusations of "promoting evil", stating, "[We] hold to the basic premise that undue suffering is bad, and that which reduces suffering is good. We do not believe in symbolic 'evil'. We acknowledge blasphemy as a legitimate expression of personal independence from counter-productive traditional norms."
Cassidy was later charged with fourth degree criminal mischief after the Satanic Temple pressed charges; if found guilty, he will face a maximum penalty of one year in prison, and a $2,560 USD fine. He was later charged with a hate crime under Iowa's list of misdemeanors.
The Sentinel subsequently launched a crowdfunding campaign for Cassidy's legal defense fund, and raised $20,000 within three hours, $10,000 of which was donated by conservative campaign group Turning Point USA. Republican presidential candidate and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also stated on TwitteX that he would donate to the campaign. Overall, the campaign raised over $75,000 for Cassidy's legal defense.
It was announced that Davis Younts, an attorney and retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel, would represent Cassidy in court. Younts stated, "My client [Michael Cassidy] was motivated by his Christian faith to peacefully protest a display that is a direct affront to God. When others, including elected leaders, were unwilling to act, he peacefully removed the display. It is my hope that the citation will be dismissed when my client's actions are understood, and that he will not face prosecution because of his Christian faith."
Kim Reynolds, the Governor of Iowa, released the following statement on 12 December 2023, just two days before Cassidy destroyed the Baphomet display: "Like many Iowans, I find the Satanic Temple's display in the Capitol absolutely objectionable. In a free society, the best response to objectionable speech is more speech, and I encourage all those of faith to join me today in praying over the Capitol, and recognizing the nativity scene that will be on display – the true reason for the season."
Iowa State Representative Jon Dunwell, an ordained minister and Republican, stated on TwitteX, "My observation as a follower of Christ, I certainly find a display from the Satanic Temple objectionable. It stands in direct opposition to my faith, and would be classified as evil...[however], in fairness, many other religions or nonreligious people have the same perspective about Christianity...[and] I don't want the state evaluating and making determinations about religions. I am guided by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution."
Another Iowa State Representative and Republican pastor, Brad Sherman, disagreed with Dunwell, calling the Baphomet display "disgusting", and arguing that the display was a violation of the Iowa State Constitution.
Sherman stated, "The Iowa Constitution is the supreme law of the State of Iowa, and it establishes the legal foundation upon which all other state laws are built...it is a tortured and twisted interpretation of law that affords Satan, who is universally understood to be the enemy of God, religious expression equal to God in an institution of government that depends upon God for continued blessings. Such a legal view...violates the very foundation of our State Constitution."
Sherman also argued against the separation of church and state in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and in favor of Christian nationalism, in the State of Iowa.
DeSantis also joined Sherman in arguing against the separation of church and state in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and in favor of Christian nationalism, after recently signing a bill allowing religious chaplains as guidance counselors in Florida public schools on 18 April 2024.
By doing so, DeSantis insisted he was only returning public schools to their "original intent", stating, "It used to be, I mean, when education in the United States first started, every school was a religious school. That was just part of it. Public schools were religious schools. I think what we're doing is restoring the sense of purpose that our Founding Fathers wanted to see in education."
DeSantis' words also echoed those of Iowa State Representative Brad Sherman in a release.
As they have done with other cases involving religion and public schools, the Satanic Temple said it would gladly send chaplains into Florida’s public schools as soon as the new law took effect. These Satanists are not actual Satan-worshippers, even though they have legal status as a church, but rather a secularist group, hoping, in their words, "to provide a safe and inclusive alternative to the religious clubs that use threats of eternal damnation to convert school children to their belief system".
DeSantis fired back. "Some have said that if you do a school chaplain program, that somehow you're going to have Satanists running around in all our schools," he said at a press conference at a high school in Kissimmee, Florida, where he also signed a bill (HB 1317) giving more school access to "patriotic organizations".
"We're not playing those games in Florida," DeSantis continued. "[Satanism] is not a religion. That is not qualifying to be able to participate in this."
In a statement sent after the bill signing, the Satanic Temple indicated that hadn't changed. The legislation takes effect July 1, 2024.
"Despite DeSantis's contempt for religious liberty, the U.S. Constitution guarantees our equal treatment under the law, and DeSantis is not at liberty to amend the U.S. Constitution by fiat, at whim," said Lucien Greaves, co-founder of the the Satanic Temple. "[Ron DeSantis] just invited Satanic chaplains into public schools, whether he likes it or not."
DeSantis' comments contradict the bill's sponsor – Sen. Erin Grall, R-Fort Pierce – who said that because of the First Amendment's religious freedom protections, the school chaplain bill (HB 931) wasn't limiting.
Sen. Grall, though, was concerned about Satanic chaplains: "I think that as soon as we get in the middle of defining what is religion and what is not, and whether or not someone can be available and be on a list, we start to run (into) constitutional problems," she said before the legislation passed.
Yet the fundamental problem remains. The program smashes through the wall between church and school, and it’s patently unconstitutional. The Supreme Court has ruled in cases like 1948's McCollum v. Champaign that public schools could not invite preachers in.
DeSantis seems to be banking on the U.S. Supreme Court's conservative majority to back this norm-breaking law—a safe bet, given the number of court opinions in recent years that have allowed religion into public schools, including a 2020 decision, Espinoza v. Montana Dept. of Revenue, that concluded that leaving religious preachers out of public schools was a kind of "discrimination".

As they have done with other cases involving religion and public schools, the Satanic Temple said it would gladly send chaplains into Florida’s public schools as soon as the new law took effect. These Satanists are not actual Satan-worshippers, even though they have legal status as a church, but rather a secularist group, hoping, in their words, "to provide a safe and inclusive alternative to the religious clubs that use threats of eternal damnation to convert school children to their belief system".
DeSantis fired back. "Some have said that if you do a school chaplain program, that somehow you're going to have Satanists running around in all our schools," he said at a press conference at a high school in Kissimmee, Florida, where he also signed a bill (HB 1317) giving more school access to "patriotic organizations".
"We're not playing those games in Florida," DeSantis continued. "[Satanism] is not a religion. That is not qualifying to be able to participate in this."
In a statement sent after the bill signing, the Satanic Temple indicated that hadn't changed. The legislation takes effect July 1, 2024.
"Despite DeSantis's contempt for religious liberty, the U.S. Constitution guarantees our equal treatment under the law, and DeSantis is not at liberty to amend the U.S. Constitution by fiat, at whim," said Lucien Greaves, co-founder of the the Satanic Temple. "[Ron DeSantis] just invited Satanic chaplains into public schools, whether he likes it or not."
DeSantis' comments contradict the bill's sponsor – Sen. Erin Grall, R-Fort Pierce – who said that because of the First Amendment's religious freedom protections, the school chaplain bill (HB 931) wasn't limiting.
Sen. Grall, though, was concerned about Satanic chaplains: "I think that as soon as we get in the middle of defining what is religion and what is not, and whether or not someone can be available and be on a list, we start to run (into) constitutional problems," she said before the legislation passed.
Yet the fundamental problem remains. The program smashes through the wall between church and school, and it’s patently unconstitutional. The Supreme Court has ruled in cases like 1948's McCollum v. Champaign that public schools could not invite preachers in.
DeSantis seems to be banking on the U.S. Supreme Court's conservative majority to back this norm-breaking law—a safe bet, given the number of court opinions in recent years that have allowed religion into public schools, including a 2020 decision, Espinoza v. Montana Dept. of Revenue, that concluded that leaving religious preachers out of public schools was a kind of "discrimination".

GEODESY is the application of mechanical and other means for the purpose of determining measurements of the earth's surface, including not only that of its general contour as to whether it is concave, flat, or convex, but also of demonstrating the amount of curvation at any given point and in any given direction.
The Copernican system of astronomy assumes that the earth's surface is convex, and upon this assumption the fallacious system has been fabricated. No astronomer has ever yet presented any proof of the Copernican system; and one of the persistent efforts of the modern physicist is to find some irrefragable proof of what every so called astronomical scientist knows to be merely an assumption.
The Koreshan System of Astronomy is in direct opposition to the Copernican system, and unlike the Copernican system it is founded, not upon an assumption, but rather upon a premise so absolutely within the sphere of mechanical demonstration as to place it beyond and out of the uncertainty of mere postulation, which we assert to be the basis of so called, modern science.
Heretofore, the common method of attempting the determination of a straight horizontal line has been by the use of the engineer's level. There are a number of optical factors not taken into consideration by the geodetic surveyor and civil engineer, which render it impossible to extend a horizontal rectiline by the aid of optical instruments. The engineer's level is an instrument used by the surveyor, and includes a level and small telescope usually placed on the top of a tripod. This is more especially employed for the measurement of angles.
It is a fact not generally known, that it is impossible to determine a horizontal rectiline with a leveling instrument, or by the unaided eye, along the apex of successive heights of a given elevation, or along a continuously extended surface. The scientific reason for this impossibility resides in the fact that in the determination of a horizontal or lateral rectiline, an impression made upon the retina of the eye by a picture from one side of a visual direction must be counterbalanced by an equal picture on the opposite side; and the geodetic engineer, not being acquainted with this law of obtension in optics, extends a curved line while he believes he is continuing a rectiline.
Two men of different heights cannot, while adjusting the tripod to accommodate the difference, extend a line of the same curvation. A civil engineer six feet tall--adjusting his tripod to conform to his height--will make a curved line, by the aid of his instrument, upward of a given curvation, while the man five feet six inches tall, adjusting his tripod to suit his height, will determine the curvation of a lesser curve proportionably to the difference in height of the adjustment.
The scientific cause of this discrepancy resides in the optical illusion referred to above, namely, that on one side of the visual line there are two factors entering into the formation of a picture on the retina, as follows: The perpendicular post producing the effect of retinal impression is shortened or elongated proportionably to the distance of the object in perspective; and in addition to this, the geolinear foreshortening (the line along the earth's surface) induces a corresponding effect upon the retinal membrane.
We confront, then, two kinds of foreshortening--the one geolinear, the other perpendicular--in all geodetic observations; and an optical phenomenon which should be attributed to the principle of perspective foreshortening is ignorantly attributed to curvation.
To obviate the introduction of optical science and the necessity for the explanation of optical illusions and intricate phenomena incomprehensible to the ordinary mind, we have instituted a simple mechanical device by which a rectiline can be determined. (See diagram No. 2, Plate 1.)
By this operation we extend a chord from the top of the uprights, at right angles to two points at the surface of the water, as in diagram No. 4, Plate 1. The relation of the straight line to the arc determines the concavity of the earth as its true contour.
In diagram No. 3, Plate 1, we have an illustration of the optical effect of an observation made with a leveling instrument, which does not differ in principle from a corresponding observation made with the unaided eye. The straight surface over which the line of observation extends is represented A A A; B B B is the visual direction deviating in a gradual curve away from the straight line A A A. The mind is unconscious of this curvation of vision, hence the curved line appears to be straight as in the dotted line C C C, while the straight line A A A appears to rise gradually as the line D D D.
The point 1 in the line of vision appears to be at the point 2. The vanishing point is where. the extremity of the visual line at 1 seems to meet the line A A A, represented by the line D D D. Beyond this point the straight line A A A, appearing as the line D D D seems to convex away from the apparent line D D D. This optical phenomenon, which is an illusion, is taken as a demonstration of the convexity of the earth, and made the basis of the illusory system of the Copernican astronomy.
In the observation illustrated by diagram No. 3, Plate 1, we prove that a straight surface curves away from the line of vision, by the identical argument employed to prove the convexity of the earth. We can prove that a straight line bends four different ways, by the same argument used to sustain the convex theory of the earth.
In connection with the establishment of the fact, in the public mind, of the concavity of the surface of the earth, and next also in importance is the determination of the amplitude of the arc, or the radius of its curvature. This cannot be determined accurately by any process of surface triangulation, because there are too many factors entering into the process to insure accuracy.
The Rectilineator, extending its line from an given height of a prime vertical, approaches the normal curve of the surface at a proportionate ratio, which may be determined at any given point by two exact methods,--each acting as the verificator of the other. Place a perpendicular at the requisite height, about six feet, more or less, and adjust the initial section of the rectilineal bar at right angles.
The points selected should be as nearly level as possible. After the extension of the line three or four miles (even less than this will answer), adjust the geodetic level. This is an instrument having two graduated glass perpendiculars very minutely spaced, with microscopes adjusted to the graduated side of the glass tubes. These two perpendicular graduates are united by a connecting tube twelve or fourteen feet long. (The tube and graduates contain mercury.)
The amount of variation of the mercury in the graduates, with the connecting tube arranged parallel with the rectiline of the section bars at any point, will indicate the degree of curvature. The instrument must be perfect; this accomplished, the determination of the radius of curvation is most simple.
This instrument may be verified by the use of another instrument adjusted to the section bars with a perpendicular rod, to which is adjusted a very slender plumbline. Across the bottom of the rod, which has a flat surface, is a minutely divided scale, to which is, also adjusted a microscope. The scale has a definite number of divisions to the inch. This will determine the amount of variation from the prime vertical; namely, the first perpendicular.
The deviation from the normal will increase either from the prime vertical, as the line extends, or toward it, according to the direction of curvation. This method of mensuration determines both the direction of the curve and the radius of curvature. Any portion of the surface of the earth can be a thousand-fold more accurately surveyed by this method, than by any process ever instituted. We know that the result will compel the world to acknowledge the Koreshan System of Cosmogony.

Sorry dudes, I saw a post that matched my idea, and I wanted it to have diffusion and spread.
The post is related to a new idea I have related to the way authors appear in papers and publications in any scientific publications (specially in papers) regarding ethics and the way things work.
The thing is the following. Nowadays, when you publish a paper or a book, you usually see a list of authors, where there is a kind of deal that the first author is the main contributor to the publication, while the last one is the main boss or PI or supervisor of it. Then we have a series of middle authors whose role is totally unknown. (And similarly happen in books). As well as other authors that might have contributed and for some reason they are not included in the paper or they appear hidden in acknowledgement.
We have to remember that science, as well as any scientific paper or publication, is a human activity, that requires lots of hours, money and itself becomes a big project or the result of a project. Now let's compare to other human activity results of a projects: Films, series and cinema. When you go to see a film, at the very end of it, YOU ALWAYS see a list of names, refering to all the people that participated making that film, and their roles (either as director, assistant, sound technicial, special effects, coffee assistant, etc.).
The thing is that a film is also the result of a human activity that, as well as science, requires both a technical and intellectual effort and contribution by all people and sides. And while in films and series almost all people (someone working in the cinema industry would be appreciated to correct me) appear in credits, NOT IN ALL SCIENFITIC PUBLICATIONS ALL NAMES APPEAR, AND IF THEY APPEAR, THEIR ROLES ARE COMPLETELY UNKNOWNs (which would benefit to those people, specially if they want to make a career on that).
Ethics regarding authorship is usually defined by the journal and the institution you are working to, but that does not meant that ethic is correct, it is fair, as ethics in science is no regulated in law, there is no international standard regarding it, and usually authorship in publications is always connected to some power dependency or game between the IP, the institution, the journal, and the predoc, assistant, technician or researcher doing the raw and brute work to obtain the results.
IT IS NOT FAIR that only intellectual work is given recognition in authorship of papers. Manual or physical/technical work either coming from technicians or from assistants, deserve also recognitions; because although ideas can be key and are good, and many machines and tests can be performed by anyone with not a high level of expertise, it is not anyone that is performing that test or making that machine work, BUT IT IS SOMEONE PARTICULAR that is organising and doing all the hard technical work for results to appear and match and prove the intellectual work.
Because of that, I suggest to all science assistants, technicians, researchers, publishers and all people involved in science (including project adminitrative managers - that are also sometimes important for finantial contribution), to start appearing in papers and publications, not in the way of a list of names or surnames in particular order, BUT AS A CREDIT LIST, where the names and surnames of the people appear, and their role as technician, assistant, supervisor, IP, researcher, etc. appears to represent the authorship, the same way it appears in a film or a series. I believe it is much more transparent, fair and ethical as giving a reference to a general service of an institution might imply changing people constantly in it, receiving only the institution and main bosses credit for it instead of technicians, making the job that these people have made not being recognised and therefore, lying completely in the shadow.
All people contributing to a scientific publication, rather intellectually or technically, should deserve recognition for the contributions done in that job, the same way all technicians are given recognition in the credits of a film or a series, either contributing technically or intellectually.
I don't expect from this post to see in a couple of months the world in fire because of angry lab assistants and technicians (although I would really like to), BUT I INSIST that if you could please share this idea between your scienfifically colleagues, start fighting with superiors for trying this ideas to be implemented (if you consider them to be good) and try to diffuse this post to many other scientifical people (either reserchers or technicians) to start GLOBALLY organising to start defending seriously this topic, up to the point of making it be regulated by law (either through goverment approval - or in the case of EU through a citizens' initiative of law project to the European Commission) for a bigger protection of the recognition of our collective, I would really appreciate, even if I don't get credit for the idea.

We have to remember that science, as well as any scientific paper or publication, is a human activity, that requires lots of hours, money and itself becomes a big project or the result of a project. Now let's compare to other human activity results of a projects: Films, series and cinema. When you go to see a film, at the very end of it, YOU ALWAYS see a list of names, refering to all the people that participated making that film, and their roles (either as director, assistant, sound technicial, special effects, coffee assistant, etc.).
The thing is that a film is also the result of a human activity that, as well as science, requires both a technical and intellectual effort and contribution by all people and sides. And while in films and series almost all people (someone working in the cinema industry would be appreciated to correct me) appear in credits, NOT IN ALL SCIENFITIC PUBLICATIONS ALL NAMES APPEAR, AND IF THEY APPEAR, THEIR ROLES ARE COMPLETELY UNKNOWNs (which would benefit to those people, specially if they want to make a career on that).

Hello fine people, sorry for the dramatic title. Here’s the deal:
I have a club where we fly high altitude balloons once a year. This will be our 8th flight. We have reached 126,000 feet confirmed by the FAA and our payload includes 4 HD vid cameras, one of which is a 360 degree model. I do most of the planning and systems work. All trackers are APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System) which send out my ham call sign and telemetry of the flight. We've also sent up some Arduino based release mechanisms like a free-fall detector and an altitude threshold release that I designed with varying degrees of success.
The last three of our flights have been for a Guinness world record and we are so close! We are making another attempt at the end of May (Memorial day in the U.S.) and as I’m working on some hot new systems I realized that I have designed some useful systems on the payload in the past but in many ways I'm a hack, or at least slow at getting the code together.
So, I know how much the maker community loves people who ask for free help and 99% of the time it's something that wouldn't work anyway but I thought I would see if anyone wanted to take a shot and join the team and have their name added with ours in the Guinness Book of World Records
Of course I can provide all the videos/telemetry from our previous flights so you know this is not a pipe dream. I have all of the gear we need, and have put most of it together, I just need someone who knows their way around Arduino better than I do.
